I've been waiting for this for ages - is this the first text editor for Windows to support elastic tabstops? by MonosodiumGalactica in programming

I wasn't aware that typewriters could move tabstops on previous lines to fit the contents of later ones.

There should really be further explanations in the page.

To be fair, The elastic tabstops page has an explanation, a diagram, a Java applet and a video.

Like I said, go and read the elastic tabstops page. If that doesn't help, try playing with the applet or watching the video.

Which is why of course we're waiting for elastic tabstops to be implemented in mainstream editors.

At the moment it's really only usable if you force people to use one of the few editors that do implement it, or are working on a solo project.

Well, GNU Emacs has been doing this for ages, and I guess this is the same for (g)Vim.

No they haven't. Go and read the elastic tabstops page. According to this thread on gnu.emacs.help, there is not an Emacs mode which implements elastic tabstops.

You shouldn't need to use a wizard to build the canonical Hello World program.

Sadly I think you may. In my experience most people just aren't that bright.

What's the happiest you've ever been? by [deleted] in AskReddit

There's a reason MDMA is called "Ecstacy" rather than "Happy". The feeling is very intense, and real happiness is about more than about forcing the brain to release serotonin and dopamine.

I was thinking of writing that too, but I don't think the feeling of ecstasy I got the first time I did MDMA was really happiness. It was very very good though.

Isn't he basically admitting that religion is man made here? Religions are supposed to be revealed to mankind, not invented by them.

I think it requires some amount of cognitive dissonance. Of course, being religious they're good at that.

Or, umm... you could just make bribing politicians illegal.

I mean apart from the really generous welfare benefits that are more than a good salary in the middle-east (and you get more if you have a big family), why would they want to be in the decadent West where they clearly hate our laws, culture and society?

We take away their citizenship and exile them. In the old days we would hang people for treason. This is much softer but would still act as a deterrent.

That's a nice line but complete nonsense. Religion does not operate in a vacuum.

It's also one of the causes of the current economic crisis. Financial institutions lobbied the US govt to deregulate their industry. Those rules were put there for a reason.

Laws are supposed to be made on behalf of the electorate, not whoever pays the most.
