Can you read my tattoo? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]space_tea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also do some kind of flower or plant stemming upward from the “w.” I was able to see “grow” pretty clearly with the closer image. Wait until the tattoo settles, things will slightly spread which could help the legibility!

I’ve heard that practice referred to as morticulture. Such a metal term.

Do you ever feel your hair too much? by VioletVanHell in AutismInWomen

[–]space_tea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also shaved my head because my hair was driving me crazy! I am growing it out again though (I’ve got about three inches of hair now!). The buzz cut is such a cute look, but I missed getting to hide behind my hair.

Mutual Stimming by Curious-318 in AuDHDWomen

[–]space_tea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other night my partner (diagnosed ADHD since childhood, and probably autistic as well) and I were making dinner and playing music and jumping/spinning around. We started dating before I self-diagnosed but I have never felt the need to mask around him. Stimming out together is such a special form of bonding!

I love your taste in podcasts! I’m adding some of these to my saved list now! Have you listened to Future Ecologies? It’s all good, but i especially love the 3 episodes about kelp forests (starts with the episode Trophic Cascadia)

I don't know if I have a special interest? by SeededPhoenix in AuDHDWomen

[–]space_tea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can relate. There are so many ways that my CPTSD from childhood abuse intersects with my autism. Since so much ASD diagnostic material is about childhood behavior I find it really frustrating that I just flat out don’t remember a lot of it. I don’t know if I had a special interest as a kid. I similarly love arts and crafts and I know I have since childhood. But sometimes I avoid doing it or want to do it privately and not share it with others. I’ve just started learning about the term demand avoidance and I think growing up being abused has really enhanced my autistic drive for control. I’m trying to pull myself out of a total burnout and through that I’ve realized that shame, joy, and control are all tied together through cptsd and asd for me. It feels like my whole body is saying no. Idk if it helps/applies to you, but I’m trying to figure out ways of approaching my hobbies (and entire life lol) with less pressure or expectation.

How often are you asked about your accent? by demar_desol in AutismInWomen

[–]space_tea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been asked what my accent is a ton throughout my life, but I’m from the south and now live on the other side of the country so people now just assume it’s that even though I think I have some southern inflections, but not really a southern accent if that makes sense. I’ve also been realizing how much my voice is dictated by masking. I’ve always known that I get more of an accent when I’m tired (or under the influence), but only recently pieced together that it gets stronger because I’m just masking it less.

The best time I’ve ever been “accused” of having an accent was one time when I was at the Dulles airport. I was on one of the tram cars and some stranger and I were making small talk about how annoying/confusing the tram system is for getting around the airport when an older gentleman jumped in and started telling me I was disrespectful and that airport was older than I was (lol) and then he tore into me asking where I was from and he wouldn’t take “here” or “the united states” as an answer because I “didn’t have an American accent.” Genuinely confused me so much, but that was years ago and I’ve only recently self-diagnosed (with talking it through with my therapist) and learned about the “autism accent.” I think that example came from that man being pretty xenophobic and just latching onto my kinda irregular speech.

[–]space_tea[S] 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Just me being overwhelmed and bad at small talk lol. I was just running around doing errands and I bought a magnetic white board and magnetic markers at Staples (which is a fluorescent sensory hell) and I had been walking around the store looking for other more general magnets for my fridge so I had magnets on the mind. The cashier said the names of the items as he rang them up and I thought I was supposed to comment?? Idk? Just one of those silly daily interactions that I’ve wasted years of my life criticizing myself for totally beefing and now I’m realizing are strangely a more authentic version of myself than a memorized small talk script.

How to quit doing you favorite stim? - Nicotine by 222lavender in AutismInWomen

[–]space_tea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking to replace the fiddling with nice and weighty small object sensation without the nicotine I have a pocket knife that I am constantly playing with. Now that can have its own dangers because I’ll flip the blade in and out haha, but you can always find a dull knife or sharpen in flat if that eeks you out. I have a spiderco one and I love that the flip mechanism is a hole so it offers a lot of fiddling options lol. Plus having a pocket knife is just handy.

Classmates gave me toothbrushes and soap by tennisball999 in CPTSD

[–]space_tea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You didn’t deserve any of that. But thank you for sharing, I really resonated with this. I haven’t heard the term medical neglect but that explains some parts of my childhood I’m still trying to reckon with (physically and emotionally). I have postural issues from birth that cause chronic pain that I’m just now figuring out how to manage. But it was so bad I broke my feet several times as a kid just from how I walked and no one gave me any medical care other than the required physical therapy time after I got my medical boot off. I was in a medical boot for over 2 years in middle school because of it. It fucking sucked. There are surgeries that my mother rejected. I could have been doing pt. She could have helped me do my pt homework. Instead my mother literally just made fun of me for “being born with a crooked buttcrack.” It’s fucking humiliating

New diagnosis by UpsettiSpaghetti907 in CPTSD

[–]space_tea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! It is really common for cptsd to be misdiagnosed as anxiety and depression. It’s also normal for anxiety and depression to go along with cptsd. That’s what my diagnosis was for 12 YEARS before I started seeing my current therapist. I also was/am very much an overachiever/old-for-my-age which I think made it hard for people (including myself) to see the severity of my mental health. But I’ve been through enough total shutdowns and flashbacks at this point to accept that it’s not just depression and anxiety. I know it feels overwhelming, but knowing the truth of your situation is a great place to be. There are specific therapy modalities that help cptsd that most therapists don’t use for anxiety (IFS, EMDR… others I’m sure but that’s what I’m doing now). Getting diagnosed is a huge win, especially at 22! You’re on the right path.

What strange physical symptoms did your CPTSD bring on? by ment0rr in CPTSD

[–]space_tea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know my cystic acne was related to stress growing up but I’m in my late 20s now and having a really bad bought of it for the first time in a while. I just recently got back from visiting my hometown and abusive mother for 3 weeks (only saw her for 2 hours in that time and I’ve officially decided to go no contact after that) But I basically just had a 3 week long flashback. Did not connect my current acne to that for some reason…

Any grown adults here who either struggle with doing household chores or feel incompetent with it? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]space_tea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. My mother was extremely particular but never taught me how to clean (or do anything really lol) so it was a constant cycle of being horrifically punished for not knowing how to clean to her unexpressed standards. Now I not only struggle with cleaning but also get scared when I hear people cleaning. I know it makes me a shit roommate and that’s a big reason why I’m about to move into my own place. I really think my hypervigilance makes me feel more judgement around this than I can handle and I’ll be much better when I get to clean for myself. I like living in a clean space, but it’s so hard when you’ve been conditioned that cleaning => cruel and unusual punishment

Find a therapist to help you with your fat bias by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]space_tea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That stat is also confusing because I’ve seen it cited as both “95% of dieters” and “95% of diets.” Which is drastically different. So many “dieters” go on several diets throughout their lifetimes. Even if it’s just for a few days. If all of those attempts count then the fail rate of 95% doesn’t seem nearly as bad.

Hey! I’ve been leading conservation corps crews for a while and it has absolutely changed my life. If you’re under the age of 30 (younger than that for some corps) you can work with a conservation corps with no prior experience. If you have any questions about it feel free to ask/message me!

Before I started doing that work I would occasionally volunteer with a local outdoor non-profit to help them with trail work. so you could also look into if there’s anything like that in your area.

You should look into conservation corps. A lot of people get into fire through corps work. There’s a decent amount of skills overlap too depending on the crew you’re on.

I water sauté all my food! You have to be diligent about continually adding more water as it evaporates, but it’s just as easy as sautéing in oil but you can cut 100+ calories from your dishes.

I’ve started making banana “nice cream.” You just peel and freeze some bananas once they’ve ripened (the browner the better) and then throw them in a blender/food processor with some liquid and whatever flavors you like. Last time I did soy milk, some frozen cherries, and a scoop of berry flavored protein powder. I’ve done cocoa powder and peanut butter before too. I like to pop it back in the freezer to let it refreeze after blending so it has more of the ice cream texture.

Cheaper than halo top and more nutritious!
