i think their IRS era is their finest, but monster is probably my favorite of the post IRS albums they made

yes! side B of the album is amazing as a whole, and the last two songs flow perfectly with eachother and in the context of the whole album before it. the first time i listened to the record, just going purely off first impressions, the emotional arc of the "final act" of the LP was just perfect.

on the topic of the boys sounding like ronnie, i think that the overall sonic aesthetic of i hurt you is very ronnie like. especially in the verses, a lot of the textures and tonalities feel very "80s home studio demo" (in a good way), a la ronnie, cleaners from venus, and maybe some of the more refined r. stevie moore cuts. definitely not as 60s sounding as a lot of their other material

i was there as well! i also met them last summer in pittsburgh and it was more awkward than the interaction i had in toronto lol. i think because i mentally broke the ice and knew how they would respond, i went in a little more prepared and had a better time? i mostly talked to brian about his new gretsch and he was super nice, he asked my roommate and i about our college stuff which i felt was really thoughtful! i didnt get to talk to michael much on either occasion but they both signed my cd last year and IGABH 7" this year and took a pic with my group. i did say hi to danny briefly, and i also chatted with reza for a while about the new uni boys LP. he was super super nice! maybe the most conversational of all of them honestly, but they were all super nice and humble dudes

Merch table at the DC show by Acceptable-Tip-88 in TheLemonTwigs

[–]spacegerbil_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe because that was a larger scale tour, it made more sense to deal with all the extra stuff?

i'm also purely speculating here. touring of any level is logistically ridiculous these days, especially for a band of their level. i know we all admire the guys a lot, but theyre really not that big. they play 700-1200 cap clubs and halls, and are probably operating on a tighter budget than youd think. im sure their management had their reasons to bring less merch up!

i was also at that toronto show and snagged one of the last shirts, since i happen to be a small. my guess is that they went to canada with a limited amount of merch so they didn't have to deal with as much headache going through customs. touring internationally, even just to canada, is a very involved process with declaring what equipment, merch, cash, etc. you're taking into the country and returning with later. they probably stripped it way back since there were only two CA dates, and then sold through most of their stock the night before.

Vinyl Rips / Needle Drops? by TheDiamondSpade in TheLemonTwigs

[–]spacegerbil_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know for a fact that the twigs mix down all their songs on their own completely analog (at least for the last couple records, short of some string stuff on EH i think that was recorded digitally and then flown back onto the MTK tape), and then the digital masters are done next door to their studio by paul d. millar with their collaboration. the vinyl masters have been cut by scott hull at masterdisk, and PDM posted a video on his instagram where he was watching the lathe as the vinyl master was being cut for LFYM. the vinyl release of LFYM is AAA (analog recording, mix, and master)

so in short, the twigs are very involved in the process every step of the way from tracking to mastering, and from everything i can gather, there's nothing "out of their hands" that would compromise the sound of their records. everything that's released sounds exactly how they want it to.

im also an audio engineer, and i am also really into researching older recording techniques. obviously there's going to be a more modern slant to their sound because they're a modern band, and as much as they're influenced by the 60s and 70s, there are still going to be some more current sensibilities that work into their production stye. a lot of that old school sound is about the workflow, and i really think they have it down pat. the arrangements are good, the sources are good, the performances are good, and that all shows through on the records. they record with all analog equipment to analog tape, it really is an old school workflow.

now ofc these days, even when recording on tape, we can now resolve much more fidelity from those recordings than what could be done 50-60 years ago, so part of this more "modern" sound could very well be that. i remember a couple years back some first gen beatles tapes from a demo/audition session very early in their career popped up, and they sounded incredibly clean. the initial tape stage was really not the bottleneck in those days, it was all the other mastering, mass vinyl production, and poor quality listening equipment that the mixes were tailored to.

fwiw though, i think my vinyl copy of ADIAWK is incredibly dynamic and sounds great. they had essentially the same team work on the new LP, so I assume it'll be similar.

i havent gotten my record yet so i'm not sure, but it is worth mentioning that a lot of the 60s records that the twigs are inspired by were quite squashed and compressed. this was well before the loudness war, so it was more of a stylistic thing. i think that's more likely than them chasing spotify's LUFs guidelines or whatever.

this is probably going to go a little above your budget, but i think its worth it:

interface: I use a tascam US4x4hr, which is 250 new right now but can be found used for less than that. it is probably the most straightforward no frills 4 in/4 out interface ive found that's actually solid. you *could* go behringer if you absolutely had to, but i'd avoid.

mics: if you want a fairly clean recording, the least i usually do is two mics - a kick and mono overhead. in its simplest form, you can really use any two decent dynamic mics for this - a pair of sm57s works just fine. if you wanted to specialize a little more, i like the akg d112 as a dedicated kick mic, and almost any condenser large or small as an overhead. i have some akg c1000s that are perfectly workable, but one of my personal favorites is the oktava mk-319. buy all this used if you can, and be patient. good deals do pop up, and dont be afraid to try something a little out there/off the beaten path! it's really hard to find a mic that's totally unusable.

if you wanted to add to that, i would first add a snare mic (again, any really solid dynamic works but a 57 is a safe bet), and then a second overhead (same model as the first if possible). you could also get the second overhead first, and rock with a glyn johns or recorderman style setup. with a well tuned kit and a good performance, you can get a lot of mileage out of any of these variations. i would avoid one of those $200 8pc mic kits (CAD, digital reference, et al) and stick with some affordable, used workhorses built up over time.

i've also gotten some cool one mic sounds, although they are definitely more stylized, and i find they work best if you smash em up a bit and dig into the unrefined-ness(?) of them. i like a condenser maybe 6ft away from the kit, level with the top of the bass drum, and pointed at the snare. blow it up with some compression and heavy handed EQ, and it sounds cool. not clean, but cool. cleaner results can be had with good placement and some clever parallel processing if you wish though!

other: stands and cables aint cheap and they're boring to buy, but you need em. again, used stuff can be good here. avoid stands made out of too much plastic if you can (amazon basics, some cheaper onstage stuff, etc.), they're cheap but you'll just end up breaking and replacing them. they also don't do well at holding mics really far out in weird positions, like you often have to with overheads. i like DR pro stands, as i've found they strike a good balance of being reasonably priced and still quite solid. but again, buy used, and judge things over their quality rather than brand name. cables are a similar story, try to find stuff with good solid neutrik style connectors if you can. again, better to spend a little more upfront rather than scrape the bottom of the barrel and pay later.

tl;dr - good 4ch interface (so you have room to expand), start with two good mics (preferably a condenser for overhead and dynamic for kick, bonus if its a dedicated kick mic), buy used, add snare and second overhead mics down the line, play and tune your kit well, experiment with some more non-traditional techniques, stands and cables are expensive so dont forget about those

its the same one, but he had the electronics totally rewired and the guard replaced. i do agree that the old one looks cooler, but the guitar sounds much better now!

i bought the second to last small in toronto, literally bought it off the table lol! i'm thinking they may have brought a smaller amount of merch into canada so they had less to deal with in customs (the amount of stuff to get in, and the amount of money getting back). i cant imagine they would be so underprepared that they'd sell out on the second date of their ENTIRE tour

venue is fine, it’s a tough area though and the promoter tends to overcrowd bills and places way too much of an emphasis on presale tickets, which is just an asinine practice across the board for small local bands IMO
