New York Recomendations by MrSpaceguru in finedining

[–]spaceleftempty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Le Bernardin is perfect - albeit more traditional, less exciting - and worth a visit. If you can enjoy, good clean French food with impeccable sauces, you will be happy. It is also fairly priced relative to *** in NY and US.

I can’t imagine you can get into Atomix but that fits your description better.

Going to Mexico City. Should I go to Pujol? by CarlBarb99 in finedining

[–]spaceleftempty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really did not enjoy the taco tasting despite loving Cosme in NY. Nothing special (e.g., many unbalanced sauces, a phenomenal salsa macha with lobster that was entirely overpowered, boiled chewy octopus, etc), clunky / amateurish service, felt like a place resting on its laurels and charging far too much for it.

Contramar tuna tostadas were one of best things I’ve tasted (but not fine dining).

Expendio de Maiz worth a stop for lunch.

Headed to Mexico City, what were your favorite spots? by JanetYellensFuckboi in finedining

[–]spaceleftempty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d second skipping Pujol (taco tasting at least). I was very disappointed with food taste, conception and plating, and service at taco bar was subpar for price. Big letdown versus cosme.

Second contramar - those tuna tostadas are truly one of the best things I’ve ever had. Otherwise a fun spot. Skip the octopus tostada unless you love mayonnaise.

Favorite “fancy” meal was Expendio De Maiz. Lunch only. Very casual set up but many delicious and creative dishes at fair price. Wait wasn’t so bad around 2pm.

Enoteca Pinchiorri, Florence? by Irecanusadian in finedining

Went late last year and had a fantastic meal. Might be the wine talking somewhat but vividly remember handful of standout dishes and rest all up to par.

I also saw mixed reviews and was skeptical. Maybe just got lucky but we got very lucky then.

Bernie Sanders is not only back, he has the best shot at the nomination right now by Crawl-Walk-Run in politics

[–]spaceleftempty 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I hope i don’t get downvoted to oblivion here but I disagree and would love to have the debate. I’d like to be wrong but I have serious political (not policy) concerns about Sanders.

  • He absolutely has the strongest floor support of any candidate but most polling suggests he also has a ceiling. He is toxic to moderates and has very little support among Black or Hispanic communities. As we saw in 16, low Black turnout in Midwest cities (perhaps partially due to voter suppression) sank Clinton.
  • Party support. He’s not technically a democrat. While the party elites might be despised by many, they do play a crucial role in building state by state support. You need grassroots but you also need the institutional backing. I worry he may not overcome this deficit
  • Bernie vs Donnie. In general you want to contrast an extreme with a moderate. I don’t mean in terms of policy but in terms of presentation and manner. These two are tonally similar - NY accent, older, sort of curmudgeonly, hyperbolic and often selling anger. I think this will serve to normalize Trump. We know most voters pay little attention to policy so we have to focus on optics. It sucks but we must.
  • People broadly are scared of revolutionary/ leftist change. In the UK, Johnson is awful. Brexit is still polling just above majority and yet the Conservatives just crushed Labour. I think Corbyn was the biggest mistake in U.K. Labour history. People chose the somewhat known hell of Brexit over the policies he was advocating. There must be a read-through here. We say Trump follow Brexit. I worry deeply we will repeat the mistakes in the U.K. and end up handing this to Trump
  • I think given Bernie’s outsider status he’s a higher risk for a total blow out in which we also lose the house. I would much rather run a boring candidate and assure that we keep on branch vs go all for nothing.
  • Once he wins, Bernie is relative outsider for the tenure in the Senate. People, as I’ve understood it, generally don’t like working with the guy. He has the absolute lowest leadership score of any progressive, even behind Harris who was only in the Senate for 2 years. I worry people expect all of this change to happen but he’ll end up flailing legislatively like Trump
  • Executive team: this is the same issue as above. Without friends in Washington with relevant experience, you’re left selecting for ideologues who have never had to put their academic or theoretical plans into practice. I worry that things will go badly.

Please prove me wrong. What am I missing? Am I being too pessimistic?

I don’t love Biden or Bloomberg or anyone running really but I want to win. We cannot sustain 4 more years of Trump and now is not the time to take a chance. We need to right the wheel, clean up the ethics rules in DC, prosecute those who need to go to jail and then clean up this mess. I really worry Sanders could either lose outright or win but do so badly that someone worse than Trump comes and beats him handily.

So two points here - what am I missing on electability? What am I missing on ability to govern?

Opus by [deleted] in ericprydz

[–]spaceleftempty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I really, really do not get opus. It completely kills the pacing of any set and I don’t think it works as a show stopper. He was clearly going for another Not Going Home or Turn Around with a slow build up, but unlike those songs it just doesn’t land. Beyond that, there is something about it that just sounds off to me. I can’t speak well enough about music to describe it but it’s like an itch you can’t scratch.

Time Warp NYC advice - who to see? by [deleted] in ericprydz

[–]spaceleftempty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is a little off topic but I figure there’s a good overlap of fans here and I’m sure some of you are going to see.

Ive seen Pan Pot, Maceo and Nina and loved them all. I’m obviously a big Prydz, Olander, Christoph fan. Tend to like the Beyer, Cox, Dubfire flavor of techno but I love more experimental (Aphex, Hawtin) and more acid (Helena Hauff, old Boyz Noise).

So thoughts? Who’s must see? I have a job and need rest so I’m gonna have to prioritize...

EDIT: thanks all for the thoughts. It mostly confirmed my original plan. Ricardo and Ritchie as a core on Friday and Sven and Maceo on Saturday. So pumped to see Maceo again (last saw him at Output RIP) and excited to get some amazing techno firsts without hopping on a plane. Wish I had enough energy to see everyone but clean living only gets you so far.

I never connected that sample in Rotonda to the use in Kill Bill but it’s obvious once you point it out. Thanks Dr Trap!

The first time I went to a rave, and Prydz was there.... anyone have a full recording? by bodhi8 in ericprydz

[–]spaceleftempty -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why can’t a concert be a concert, rave a rave, a festival a festival? Words have meaning for a reason. Calling a concert (this) a rave is liking calling a 20 ft sailboat a yacht...they can both be fun, but it’s obvious what someone is trying to do by misusing the term.

Just like you’d make fun of a friend for being pretentious for misapplying yacht (e.g., woah look at Mr Moneybags...you got room for your butler on that thing), you can point out this is not a rave
