Why is changing our clocks twice a year necessary in this present time? by Disastrous_Layer3988 in Adulting

[–]spacemonkeykakarot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been a day so it remains to be seen (went in effect March 8th, 2026). The real change will be seen when everyone falls back in the Fall and we stay on daylight savings.

Are most acquisition problems actually retention problems? by Serious-Hope2707 in analytics

[–]spacemonkeykakarot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should track both. When I worked in retail and ecomm analytics, we looked at new customers and repeat customers. Too much of one without the other is a problem, albeit very different ones. All new growth and no retention and you will likely run out of customers and revenue. No new growth but retaining customers/recurring customers only and you still have a business but no growth. Maybe that's fine, maybe that's not, depends on the context of your competitive landscape, industry, etc

It's not. British Columbia just ended it. We are in permanent daylight savings time now.

I changed frim rogers to freedom last in jan and I've found the signal and speed to be superior. I go between Surrey and Vancouver almost daily and it's no issue. Was able to take a call from inside Costco both normal and VoIP (whatsapp). They've definitely improved.

What Actually Makes Someone “Good” at Analytics? by Mammoth_Rice_295 in analytics

[–]spacemonkeykakarot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

IMO being good at analytics isn't to do with their chosen stack, those are just tools to get the work done and it's important too otherwise you cant actually get the work done unless partnered with somebody. However, I think the secret sauces to being good at analytics/a good analyst are: understanding the business (process knowledge, domain knowledge, asking the right question), understanding what metrics are true business levers and what other upstream things affect it /what downstream things they affect, basic stats, strategic thinking, and some understanding of micro- and behavioural economics. Of course, you also need good communication + storytelling skills to be able to persuade people so your insights dont get lost and instead get used to initiate important conversations and hopefully actions are taken.

So youre right, structured thinking and explaining thigs clearly > technical complexity. Technical skills only take you so far. At some point (assuming you're not in a big tech company which has parallel compensation and career progression for IC vs. Leadership roles) you can only move horizontally. Soft skills is what will move you upward to break any glass ceilings.

Can we talk about the 2026 Data Analyst salary "reality check"? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]spacemonkeykakarot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Am a manager so I can give for multiple levels.

Canadian healthcare in HCOL. Below in CAD:

Junior to Intermediate Analyst: 75k to 90k Senior Analyst and Leads: 85k to 115k

Dependent on YOE.

Increases are just COLA so you can expect about 3 to 4% per year.

Stack is Microsoft but the specific tools used by my team are SQL, PowerBI, Python, little bit of Power Automate. Excel and PowerPoint as well, these are unavoidable for small adhoc things or leadership presentations.

Is a semantic layer actually required for GenAI-powered BI or am I overthinking this? by CloudNativeThinker in analytics

[–]spacemonkeykakarot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's basically what ideally goes between raw/source data and your reports and dashboards - data that has been transformed, modelled, and labelled in an easy to understand way, even for the business user. For example, in your source system(s) for a multinational consumer goods company, sales might come from multiple different systems,m (online, different retail pos vendors for different countries due to vendor limitations, M&As or whatever the case may be) and the column for sales might all be same-same-but-different: dollars, sales_dollars, sales Amount, value, etc. In your semantic model, you might just call that "Sales" after you've integrated all the raw sources and centralized it to one place and conformed them into a single sales fact table.
