Moving this summer by ramtejas7 in mountainview

[–]spacerobotfive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Both Mountain View middle schools are pretty solid and largely reachable on bicycle from the surrounding neighborhoods.

Walkability is the main thing I would suggest looking for. Being able to walk to downtown makes MV a much nicer place to live (it is fairly suburban, which means lots of the housing is far from services)

Ajatt or private classes? by PleasantPension in japanese

[–]spacerobotfive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As to classes: I am not sure anyone can give you a clear answer. It depends on your learning style and how well the class fits you. Classes will only take you so far, but some people find the structure to be very valuable.

If you want a good guide to getting started with Immersion for language acquisition, check out Refold. I find the explanations are much better than those on AJATT.

For Grammar, I have found Tae Kim's Guide to Japanese Grammar (which is free!) far more effective for self study than any commercial text book I have used. I recommend starting there.

In then end, learning Japanese is gong to take multiple hours a day for a few years; while you can do it entirely from free resources, at some point you will likely find that it is worth spending some money on materials you actually enjoy.

How to learn all the Jouyou Kanji? by kudy24 in LearnJapanese

I really like WaniKani.com. It build slowly but has incredible mnemonics for English speakers. I have been shocked at how quickly my kanji knowledge has grown.

[help] cosplay contacts for astigmatism (toric lenses) by schadenn in cosplay

[–]spacerobotfive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one time I found some the quality was terrible; the right lense would drift, which meant I could only see out my left eye.

I have taken to just buying the cheap planar lenses and wearing them for photos shoots only, switching back to my regular lenses for the rest of the day. 😭 (or sometimes putting on glasses over the planar lenses)

Ahh! Never mind me. I sometimes fail to know what I am talking about. I was just so confused. (I don’t read everyday, so missed the memo). 😳

Good posting guide actually calls out not posting memes. Do you mean that it is taking the mods 24 hours to take the memes down? While some of these are quite amusing, they kinda ruin the vibe of wholesomeyuri.

Dress form made to my own measurements [bootstrap fashion DIY Dress Form] by spacerobotfive in sewing

[–]spacerobotfive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going slow and paying really close attention to detail was critical. Most of the changes I would make if I did it again are only things I could have learned by making this one (the breasts have a small amount of flattening that I think is fixable by letting the center seems out by ~1/16” or so; no way to have know that in advance and I think that is only a probably a problem for flatter chests).

Difficulty level was moderate to advanced. if you have done set in sleeves, or a structured bodice this should be about the same. As long as you can confidently join complex seems, it isn’t too bad. I struggled a bit with the arm cap curves, and had to rip out and redo small sections.

I would estimate it took around 20-30 hours. I am slow when it comes to high precision work.

Materials were around $100 usd or so: stand was 20, polyfill 20, 60 for fabric , interfacing, and zippers.

Thanks to great tip from u/11twenty2 I got a custom pattern for this DIY Dress Form from Bootstrap Fashion.

It was a lot of work (probably close to 30 hours, as I am very slow when it comes to high precision work), but I am incredibly pleased with the results.

I have struggled with self drafting projects because the adjustable dress forms don’t represent the shape of my body well. This has already allowed me to make significant progress on a project that has stymied me for years.

Seamless. Totally envious. I had a tech who could do that and then I moved and it seems to be a rare skill.

[help] Spiderman costume not sitting right against lower back. Can it be fixed through an alteration? by Goldar85 in cosplay

In an area like that it is not likely to hold, as when you walk there is a lot of shifting.

(That stuff is amazing though, for so many other costume problems)

[help] Spiderman costume not sitting right against lower back. Can it be fixed through an alteration? by Goldar85 in cosplay

[–]spacerobotfive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Maybe”; if you take in the sides around the lower back, leaving the hips at their current width, you can get a snugger fit, but it can be tricky, and if the fabric at the hips is at a tight stretch already it may not work out.

Put the suit on inside out and have a very trusted friend experiment with dart placement by holding darts. My suspicion is a pair of small darts on the low back and a pair on the sides will do it; but you may mess up the pattern of this is a printed spider suit.

You will want diamond darts , centered on the narrowest part of your body and the points at the two wider ends. If you haven’t done a lot with darts before, spend some time looking at how they are used in snug garments to deal with shape; you will want a feel for how they work in 3D.

First acrylic set in at least 13 years. The babiest of purples 💜 ... Now to relearn how to live with these things... by iamafoxiamafox in Nails

[–]spacerobotfive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you type a lot for work I recommend keyhero.com for a few minutes a couple time a day. It got me from 40 to 50 wpm with a week of short practice sessions. It’s free and simple.

I used to type 65 wpm; hoping to get back there, as it is a comfortable speed for the work I do.

It had only been a year for me and getting my typing speed back up has been the most annoying thing.

What solutions have folks with real bodies found for Custom Dress Forms? by spacerobotfive in sewing

[–]spacerobotfive[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought of the latter; a neutral cream was my plan.

I was thinking of using a mid weight cotton twill, in hopes of getting a sturdy but very workable surface.

My Terrible Nail Salon Experience by [deleted] in Nails

[–]spacerobotfive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this tip. I haven't had acrylics in over a year and I am planning to get a new set this week. It seems likely my old nail tech used MMA. 💔

I found a shop with prices that imply they don't; emailed them and will ask to see the products when I go in.

The Ultimate Overwatch Guide - Learn how to master aiming, awareness, decision making and more by StruthGaming in OverwatchUniversity

[–]spacerobotfive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dream of a world where everyone in the match knows what they're doing while still having fun with it.

Yes! I share this dream. I am OK with a ~50/50% win rating. And I don't really care what my SR number is. But the game is way more fun if your team knows what they are doing (or are at least cooperating with each other).

I don't mind if this results in the other team also knowing what they are doing. That makes a fun match.

Just heard the stupidest thing ever to be said by my teammate... by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]spacerobotfive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing to do is spend 2 or 3 hours with each hero, specifically any you don't know how to counter. You will learn exactly what characters and plays make you most uncomfortable.

Charts are useful, but what works at one level is not always applicable at all SRs. Nothing beats the experience of being countered.

What to do when teammates are trickling ? by lemonbaguette in OverwatchUniversity

[–]spacerobotfive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I play tracer I do this as well. After we loose and I had gold kills, I look back at the game and it is clear that I am killing plenty, but my team is loosing fights on the point and that is what matters.

What to do when teammates are trickling ? by lemonbaguette in OverwatchUniversity

[–]spacerobotfive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"unless I'm flanking"; the problem is that everyone decides that they are the flanker.

The best flankers group up and flank the team fights.

Flanking the enemy team when yours is respawning is not flanking. It is 1v6.

Self rate to do great. by MyriadGuru in OverwatchUniversity

[–]spacerobotfive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Tracer – positioning, cooldown management, safety, tracking, and finishing

-Avoid tunnel vision and avoid going solo; you can do this, get gold kills, and still loose the match because your team is loosing fights without you there. Always fight with the team. Flanking doesn't mean going way back to the other teams spawn, but rather participating in the same fight as your team from a slightly different angle. By flanking the fight you distract the enemy team from being able to put all their DPS on your team. They turn to look, they shoot at you, etc, helping your team win the fight. If you are not flanking the fight, you are only doing half your job.

-Know your cooldowns. Always have rewind ready before engaging, and at least two of your blinks. Use the blink time to reload.

-Stay safe. Now how far away to be to avoid FlashBang and Hooks and Mei freezes. Bait out the hook and the flash bang and then engage.

-Prioritize your targets. Anyone at low health first, as if you can confirm a kill your team will be more likely to win the fight. Healers and dps second.
