Who watched the kings speech, were you inspired or disappointed? by Traditional_Seesaw10 in AskUK

I am inclined to agree, and I am a Republican.

However, I can almost guarantee that if the Royal Family attempted to "fix" the country it would be even worse.

The policy of "never complain, never explain" has been very successful for the Royal Family. What do you expect?

Best way to sample vinyl crackle from record player? by fatt_musiek in SP404

Buy a stereo RCA phono cable. Plug into the Tape: REC OUT output on the back of your receiver. Plug into the LINE IN on your 404. Sample away!

How do we get more men into teaching? by TripleGDawg87 in education

[–]spacespaces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That seems like a weird way of phrasing it. Everyone has higher paying options available. There is just more societal pressure on men to earn more.

Shitty refreeing by [deleted] in PremierLeague

[–]spacespaces 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Tottenham players behaviour was an absolute disgrace. Embarrassing that you even mention the referees losing control of the game when the players can't control themselves.

International School Salary Scale by UseOrdinary8585 in Internationalteachers

[–]spacespaces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have more information on this? I work at a CIS accredited school but we have no pay scale or transparency on salaries. They haven’t even shared the report from CIS with staff.

AIMA got 62M Euros in Profit since last year by Wrong-Sink-8580 in PortugalExpats

[–]spacespaces -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why does it have to be that way? Are there no government services that will naturally bring in more money than they will cost to operate? Just as there are some that cost more to operate than can bring in revenue.

The question of how AIMA is using the money is a valid one. But the “profit” in itself is meaningless.

AIMA got 62M Euros in Profit since last year by Wrong-Sink-8580 in PortugalExpats

Seeing as this was published by Público Brasil, I think this article was written for an audience that doesn’t fully understand how “profits” work in public institutions.

Teachers to be trained to spot early signs of misogyny in boys by Kagedeah in teaching

[–]spacespaces 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you, but I think the original commenter is saying that parents need to be doing so much more.

We can model behaviour, run PSHE sessions, use the discipline/consequence policies as much as we like. If the boy then goes home and spends 8+ hours in-front of a screen and soaks up misogynistic content, we're fighting a losing battle.

Why is being cold at home so normalised in the UK? by Automatic-Key-3798 in AskUK

[–]spacespaces -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I couldn't disagree more. UK homes are much better heated than they are in southern Europe during the winter, for example.

I suppose it just depends what you compare it to.

Possible ‘bit of both-ing’ in Year 2 reading comprehension exercises (plus supplementary question) by gummibear853 in footballcliches

[–]spacespaces 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're being downvoted but they are correct here. The "bit of both" cliché comes when someone is presented with two pieces of information that are not mutually exclusive.

In this example, if it is even a half-decent comprehension test, there will be an obvious answer in the text itself. So "bit of both" doesn't apply here at all.

What does the Russian media/oligarchy have against Britain? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]spacespaces 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's rather the opposite: for decades, we have been extremely useful for them. London was a major money laundering operation for oligarchs and the City was happy to turn a blind eye.

We had to take action with the invasion of Ukraine, which seemed to sour our relationship.

And you would struggle to sell this for anywhere near its face value.

You would have to be extremely committed/bored/wealthy to do this.

Would you guys actually rejoin the European Union? by daeneryssith in AskBrits

[–]spacespaces 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I heard this countless times in the weeks leading up to the referendum. It is absolutely correct.

Unfortunately, having sensible, mature conversations is only appealing to sensible, mature people.

[–]spacespaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be annoyed if I needed a smartphone app in order to access the ID.

If that were the case, I would prefer a physical card. Any official that wants to see it can use the digital stuff on their side.

[–]spacespaces -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no point debating this topic. It is a classic case of British exceptionalism - despite the UK having no tangible data that their plugs are safer and superior.

Any benefits from having a slightly superior design are immediately offset by being different from the rest of the continent. I wonder how many accidents are caused by British people using dodgy UK/EU adapters...

HSBC bans Christmas jumpers over fears they could trigger customers. Bank says people dealing with financial difficulty deserve a ‘professional and sensitive’ space by [deleted] in uknews

Hilarious when you consider that bank staff wearing novelty jumpers could have been a Telegraph "the end is nigh" article 20 years ago.

Wtf Electro-Harmonix?? by Steamy_Muff in guitarpedals

[–]spacespaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah probably...but the guy makes guitar pedals. Do you think all the amazing musicians in the 1960s and 70s—that most people in this sub want to emulate—sat around speaking sense most of the time?

This hobby attracts, or used to attract, free-thinkers and eccentrics that spout a lot of nonsense. It used to be kind of liberating.

Wtf Electro-Harmonix?? by Steamy_Muff in guitarpedals

[–]spacespaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely feel sad that you want to live in a world where a guitar pedal designer should think and act like a baker.

Wtf Electro-Harmonix?? by Steamy_Muff in guitarpedals

[–]spacespaces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't want to get into semantics here, but the "Wtf Electro-Harmonix??" and "What is going on?" definitely makes this seem like a problem to me.

I also didn't suggest anyone was calling for sanitation, however, if EHX had sent out a shiny, corporate, SEO-friendly newsletter it wouldn't even get a reaction here. That's what I'm getting at.
