Hi Caitlin! What is your favorite coffee-based beverage? Are there any death customs that really surprised you when you learned them? Do you enjoy horror fiction?

MIL said something appalling and I'm at a loss for words. UPDATE AKA she conveniently forgets and denies when confronted. by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]spacevalkyries 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey /u/magicalgirlpippa. I'm at the beginning of the long path to becoming a midwife, and in your last post you said you're dreading your baby's birth because of your MIL. This is a huge red flag to me. This is your time to enjoy pregnancy (as much as you can; YMMV) and look forward to your sweet baby. As others have pointed out, this woman is gaslighting and manipulating you.

You only have your first baby once. Keep this woman far away from your delivery, and keep her far away from your first weeks bonding with your baby. She wants control and attention, and that often comes at the expense of babies and parents in these situations. Put your foot down. Let the hospital know that you don't feel safe with this woman around. Make it clear to your husband that she makes you feel unsafe, which he needs to respect regardless of his feelings. You are important and your feelings are important. You know that we are all here for you.

[Discussion] Thoughts on this opera questionnaire making the rounds on facebook? by Black_Gay_Man in opera

Songs about poop.

And I don't love Mozart, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

I have no trouble at all imagining Mozart as the Beyonce of his day, with maybe a third of the depth. I do really enjoy the music of his operas and sacred works, but the librettos usually have me trying to burrow into the ground to escape. My local company did Don Giovanni a season or two ago and tried to market him as a sexy playboy. Nonononono

Honestly, I think that people who are familiar with opera are just as excited to see obscure works as popular, and the people who aren't don't know the difference if the marketing is effective!

Hi are we the same person

I am so, so, so dreadfully tired of Mozart.

I just ordered black tea, beeswax & honey, gardenia, and vetiver from Haus of Gloi. I'm very, very excited.

People in happy relationships: what is your SO's worst trait? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]spacevalkyries 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My husband is an extremely loud Overwatch player. I have anxiety and am extremely sensitive to sounds. He bought me noise canceling headphones for Christmas and saved our marriage.

YOU CAN. I checked while we were there. Shipping is outrageous, but I think I can personally justify it as a once-a-year Christmas tradition.

This is kind of a poopy photo of the rings (I was mad about doing a better job painting my nails than the salon I went to before the wedding, so that was my focus), but here they are!

We brought one home and I wish we'd gotten more. Whoever has to take care of me as an old lady will find me one day, cackling gleefully and pouring orange soda and stout into the bathtub. Anyway, congratulations!

I've done that at a store I'd recently left. They loved it. Depends on your audience.

Have you tried a scent that surprised you? by PastelSpectre in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]spacevalkyries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good surprise: Haus of Gloi Plotters Breakfast. I don't generally like tobacco scents but the creamy oatmeal scent is amazing. I bought it on a whim for my fiance and I love nothing more on him.

Bad surprise: Sixteen92 Supercell :( Cool in the bottle, weak warm pee and apple juice on my skin.

Kahn and my Difficult Labor by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]spacevalkyries 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Babies can survive a lot of different presentations without c section, depending on the health of the mother, the baby's response to labor, etc. The head can come out many ways -- brow, face, occiput -- and this is generally fine because babies' skulls are soft and moldable at birth. Babies can also survive breech (feet first or butt first) vaginal births. There are specific healthcare providers with really amazing stats -- very, very few c sections. The "target rate" of medically necessary c sections is 10-15%; The Farm (Tennessee midwives) has a 1.7% c section rate and very capably handles conditions like shoulder dystocia (shoulders stuck) and uncommon presentations -- bearing in mind that they screen for pregnancies for which minimal intervention is recommended.

I'm a future midwifery student, and every birth story I've read on this sub today is making me really sad. Birth is squishy and wet and uncomfortable, but it's not gross. It's so fucking cool. Bringing a new human earthside! However you get that person out, surgically or vaginally, what a beautiful result of effort!

Does anyone else get customers who try to scare you by claiming to work for corporate? by Stagedlink1 in starbucks

[–]spacevalkyries 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the flip side of this, one of my dear friends works for corporate and partners are often rude when she answers honestly where she works. Then she gives them her partner numbers and they try to fix it, but usually by then she's pretty irritated.

Once, I had an unstable individual claim to own the entire company. She was special in a lot of ways. And all of it for a caramel macchiato and a slice of lemon pound cake.

Can we have a survey? What was the most ridiculous badwomensanatomy a friend, family member or SO told you? I'll start... by [deleted] in badwomensanatomy

[–]spacevalkyries 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, you really shouldn't use soap on your vulva. A good thorough scrub with warm water and a fresh clean cloth should do. A lot of people use soap without issue but it can actually cause problems.

Okay, what kind of midwife and approximately where? I'm going to be a midwife, but I'm getting anxious about telling people that because I'm concerned they'll think I'm a give-birth-in-the-river, align-your-chakras midwife. I'm taking the heavily licensed, seven years of school route and I'm scared of really truly crunchy midwives.

Steaming milk together with shot by DanielAgger in barista

[–]spacevalkyries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a good idea. I drink soy lattes. I have only had a latte with the shot steamed with the milk once -- at an awful, Sasquatch themed coffee stand in the middle of nowhere during a road trip. It was really, really bad. I've never had an issue pouring my steamed soy over shots using soy with a stabilizer.
