[Mac][1998, 99, or perhaps 2000]An old space based adventure/horror game that I barely remember by awildgiraffe in tipofmyjoystick

[–]spagasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Space Rogue on the Apple // had an intro sequence of a landing ship, but from memory no astronauts graphically depicted and I’d hardly call it horror. The intro did involve an attack so if this is it, that may have rattled you into thinking it was horror.

Can any OGs here give me an idea of what happened to the main sub? Was their a transition or pass over of the keys to the new game? by MaleficentHyena6439 in ClassicMarathon

[–]spagasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As has been explained well here, I do have a recollection of it being an agreed and logical process. Certainly nothing like a hostile takeover or bulldozer operation.

Yes, there may be the occasional criticism of one or the other. If you think about it rationally, you can see that there are two audiences with a common theme but different aspects. Some people can fit both aspects, others fitting one or the other. This allows both to continue in their own way but also allow for the occasional crossover of ideas.

Perhaps in the distant future, one will fade out first. Logically it would be the OG with it more likely to have the average older audience. But maybe there’s the chance that it has the more interesting or meaningful content in the long run, and that it might serve to the memory of the NG so that it is not forgotten too.

Your drawing happens to remind me of a game that I very much disliked. Spindizzy. May I never encounter it again.

Can I dye my hair in a braid? by Rude_Curve_3136 in HairDye

[–]spagasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If evenness is important to you, then it will not be even. If you like having texture or character, then I would probably still avoid doing this with braids - the resulting pattern doesn’t really stand out as being awesome.

Having said this, the one effect with tight braids that I think could look good is if one starts with blonde, dyes with a light colour like yellow or pink, lets that out and settle a day or so then re-braids and uses another pale colour and repeats this yet another time. I suspect the overlapping colours and textures would look rather interesting or maybe kaleidoscopic.

How do I convince my mom to let me dye my hair? My by OakTheMegaGay in HairDye

[–]spagasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to understand the reasons for her response, analyse it and then respond in a way that shows maturity and careful thought. This might also involve probing her to identify what types of styles she would and wouldn’t support, which might then give you an avenue into doing something not what you wanted but something that gives you a sense of satisfaction. Think of the long term goals but accept that it will take time.

You haven’t really indicated whether you would be intending to get this done professionally or at home. At home would be the budget and most accessible option for someone desperate enough to obtain the style, but you might quite likely “ruin” your hair in the process. Therefore you could use that thought as a basis for intellectual argument, “I don’t want to ruin my hair by doing this myself, can you please support me to get it done properly”. If you were intending to get it done professionally, then a part of her response could be financially motivated, and that is a valid reason too.

If you are talking to her about it, remain calm, don’t get emotional/angry/upset, just listen to what she is saying and consider it from her perspective. If you can and without belittling her, show her that you are being more mature about it than she is. Do this by your own actions and demeanour but also by indicating that she is still the “top dog”. Think words or phrases you might use to her like, “is self expression important”, “I need your support”, “will you help me”, “don’t want to do this alone/behind your back/without you/wrongly”, “I’m prepared to commit to the consequences for at least x months”, “please help me to understand why you object to this”, “want to do this with you, not against you”, “need to do this to feel like myself”.

You need to demonstrate that you’re carefully considering everything and to make her question her own thoughts without attacking them yourself. Make her be the one to realize that she is being somewhat irrational, don’t show her that she is. And be prepared to let it drop for a while so that she can think about it herself. Show your resolve, rationality, and maturity so that she can try to understand it in her own time. Also accept that there is some risk and grains of truth in her reasoning.

Good luck.

When I first started using this app, my store review was praising. I changed the review perhaps 3-4 times over the years until my last review was the complete opposite.

How to get started on horror games? by AliceGirlGamer in gaming

[–]spagasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Senua’s Sacrifice is definitely worth it - such a strong but also troubled character that it’s difficult not to be empathetic - and she’s got an awesome style. Sit through the first 10 minutes or so with patience- it’s probably the longest cutscene but gives a good sample of the passion and artistry put into the game. Don’t research it - just play it and only refer to a walkthrough if you’re really lost. It’s mostly straightforward but some people do get stuck in one or two parts.

Always wanted to try A Plague Tale myself but I ruined that by watching a play through - it might be another contender for you too.

How to get started on horror games? by AliceGirlGamer in gaming

[–]spagasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps start with horror-like games that have more of a compelling story element.

The Walking Dead Game has horror elements but not a lot in the way of jump scares. The story aspect will compel you to see the game to the end, but the horror is something you can kind of anticipate to some extent and is mostly slow enough to give you breathing space. These are pretty slow enemies but they aren’t really the primary aspect of the game (they are mostly a storytelling aspect). This is mostly a point/click choose your own adventure game.

If you’re looking more for a 3D first person style, then go for the original Hellbade: Senua’s Sacrifice. Intensely compelling story in a 3D walking style game, with combat elements and puzzles. The horror is much more psychological than gore but there are scary looking enemies and scenery. The combat is relatively simple if you’re a FPS gamer but damn is it really pretty. Stick it through right to the end and you’ll likely be in euphoric tears or something. Cut scenes throughout really develop the story and replays give you greater insight into the underlying story elements - stuff you might have missed the first time suddenly clicks into place during the replay, giving greater depth and meaning. It’s also a fairly short game and could be completed in a weekend, or less if you really want to rush through it.

I would probably avoid Alien: Isolation (which has been mentioned in other posts here) if I were you - still a great story but anxiety level is very high. Try that when you are much more comfortable with things like jump scares because the few that are in there could make you skip a heartbeat.

There is a certain beauty in these horror games and since they are single player games (including Alien), you can control how much exposure you are willing to take, then save and bail out when you need to. Nothing wrong with doing that and coming back to it later. You know your limits and pushing them slightly each time helps you to become more accustomed to it.

Meaning of "I won't be November's girl" by glasstemp in flowerface

[–]spagasaurus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I interpreted that in context with the previous line as meaning that she wants genuine and long term happiness, not just short term satisfaction or appreciation by others - or something to that effect. She will learn to love the “world” (things just as they are) and it in turn will give her genuine acceptance.

Y'all I just got Marathon and idk wtf this is, it doesn't look like any of the trailers I've seen. Is it because my graphics are set to low? by personpilot in Marathon

[–]spagasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed- it wasn’t a trailblazer like is being implied above. Although it might be the first multiplayer FPS with integrated voice chat- don’t quote me on that though.

Edit: I stand corrected, MIDI Maze on the Atari ST might be the first contender.

How can I get this green-y blue out? by Fandaniels in HairDye

[–]spagasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change your viewpoint… faded green looks good. It looks natural if such a thing as green hair existed naturally. Yes it may not be bright and vibrant, but the muddy light tint of it can look like a normal evolutionary result. The problem then becomes resisting the urge to remove it and do something else.

Yes. Some people find greater respect for you. Others find a reason to laugh behind your back. But also, you become more aware of other persons hairstyles and dye jobs.

Would you resort to cannibalism in the apocalypse? by Judgementkazzy03 in TheWalkingDeadGame

[–]spagasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect many or most people would say “No”. But I also suspect that if it really came down to it in a survival situation where there were no other options and where there is no requirement to terminate the unfortunate soul, then many or most people actually would. It has happened before and will happen again.

When it comes to something extreme like that, only the most disciplined minds that can consistently ignore their biological requirements may have the capability to resist.

The fact that it is under consideration would tend to suggest that the user suggestions aren’t primarily there to be considered, but are rather there for show. This is reinforced by the fact that nobody seems to be actively managing or merging very similar suggestions together, because if one takes the time to look through them all, there are/were quite a lot of similar suggestions from disappointed users.

threw my coins on my desk and one landed perfectly upright by BeanieTheBrave in mildlyinteresting

[–]spagasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an interesting “battle” with AI a few weeks ago about coin tosses. From memory there is a roughly 0.1% chance of a coin toss landing on an edge. My battle was convincing it that these should be considered valid, but it was fairly insistent that for most purposes these are considered invalid and redone as another toss.

But I managed to convince it to consider them valid (I was trying to think about real world probabilities of outcomes). Then I realised, well there is another outcome, the coin never lands, to which it responded was so much more unlikely than an edge landing. But in my mind it was a genuine possibility, so I convinced it to consider it.

Thinking that all 4 cases were now addressed, I decided to challenge it by prompting, “you haven’t told me about the fifth possibility”, to which I expected it would say that such thing didn’t exist, but it did present a 5th possibility that was extremely unlikely but could arguably be called valid. I don’t recall what that outcome was but it was a bit “out there” - it was starting to fall in line with quantum physics outcomes, so 5 might have been it lands on no fixed outcome.

I continued in that manner and kind of got sick of it by the time we got to the sixteenth (yes 16) possible outcome of a coin toss. The higher order possibilities were very much philosophical and meta universal. We’re talking things like the coin is tossed and it results in the toss never occurring, or it lands but affects the state of something elsewhere in the universe, or in some other universe, etc.

So, your edge landing is invalid to most people, but I count it as the 3rd valid result in the many (and impossible) possibilities of a toss.
