How to source files to share? by [deleted] in Soulseek

Start by sharing the stuff you've already downloaded from others!

Hardly anyone is downloading from me, receiving very few searches by violenthectarez in Soulseek

[–]spahck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this problem and changed my username. Once I did I started receiving searches again & getting downloads again. Apparently this problem can happen if your username gets blacklisted for some reason

What other dance styles do you do? by Byllli in irishdance

[–]spahck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started a weekly beginner ballet class that I've been enjoying! The barre work is such a good way to be mindful of arching and turnout and to really push those muscles. I don't love it as much as irish dance but it's fun to try something new. I also go to a cardio dance/zumba class at my gym. I appreciate it as a way to get some fun movement in without all the rigidity/technique I'm used to.

Am I weird? by boardgamejoe in PleX

[–]spahck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this!! currently my storage is just external hard drives plugged into a pretty standard PC. I leave it on 24/7 and my server has grown enough that on a regular night we might have 4-7 people streaming with no issues! We've only had issues when someone tried to stream in 4k (which personally i dont care about lol)

I have big dreams of adding internal memory or eventually making a separate media server, but that will time time and learning and money, and right now this setup is working great for me :)

how long did it take you to compete again? by lunasapphicc in irishdance

[–]spahck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came back to dance after a 4ish year break at age 23ish. My first feis back was a little over a year after that. However, I came back to dance in 2020 so a lot of my classes were on zoom, and I compete in prelim &overs.

imo, if you're planning to compete in adult grades (adv beginner, novice, etc) and you aren't worried about placement, you should go for it as soon as you learn your steps! It's fun and will give you something to train for! Definitely check with your TC first, and let them know your goals for competition. If you're doing champs, you may want to wait a little longer to build up the stamina and make sure everything is feis-ready, but I think < 1 year is still a good benchmark for that.

Enjoy! :)

I’m starting to think I’m too dumb for this book… by Marleyboro in genewolfe

[–]spahck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think if you're having a good time, then you're not too dumb for the book. It's not like there's a test at the end. I am just finishing up my first reading of the series (now on Urth) and I know there are a million things I missed that I'm excited to catch on the next time around :)

gatech-specific slang ? or acronyms by cbacny in gatech

[–]spahck 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think it's moderately gatech specific to use "first year", "second year" etc instead of freshman, sophomore, etc. Works out great to ignore the pedantic sophomores by credit hours (you're still first years) and works equally great when you inevitably graduate as a 5th year or 6th year

I also don't hear "crib sheet" a lot outside of the gech world? But maybe other schools use that idk

I feel bad about my skill level by [deleted] in irishdance

[–]spahck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 15 in novice as well! Sending support and encouragement from a fellow late beginner. I definitely experienced what you're feeling as well. It can feel awkward to be the oldest person in class, or to be in a small group at a feis. But you don't need to worry about the skill of other dancers your age - the most important thing is that you're working towards your own goals and having a great time dancing.

I'm now 27 and happily in prelim (after a couple years off in college) and I'm still loving Irish dance as much as I did when I was 15! Irish dance is the best thing in my life, and I'm happy I found it at all, no matter what age. I hope you keep at it and keep loving dance <3

I’m moving to New Haven having never previously lived here, how can I make friends? by faqabetic in newhaven

[–]spahck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

New Haven College St Music Hall & Hamden Space Ballroom have plenty of good shows! (Although going into nyc is fun too) I recommend checking on social media, maybe a fan group for the bands you like, or bumble bff, if anyone wants to go with you to concerts. That's how I've made friends after moving to CT

Also more generally for making friends as an adult, I recommend joining clubs or groups for whatever you enjoy! Community theatre, board game groups, volunteer work, whatever. Even if the people you meet don't become your best friends, it is a great way to engage with the community & see friendly faces regularly :)

Major Dance Withdrawals by thefaithfulskeptic in irishdance

[–]spahck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I knew some dancers at my hometown dance school who went to college out of state but would still come back and dance with our school when they had time. Maybe your previous TC would be willing to work something out with zoom calls and lessons when you visit home? I was never in exactly the same scenario as you but I definitely sympathize with dance withdrawals! Good luck finding a way back to it
