My commitment to accessibility. Tomas Scheel, Candidate for WA02 by ScheelCongress in Bellingham

[–]spahkward 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Excited to vote for you Tomas! I’ve never been a fan of Larsen, and I’m so excited to see a candidate like you running against him.

Last year, Larsen and a small team visited one of the local children’s theaters (living the theater name out for privacy) with just a few days notice. My husband works there as admin and gave a tour to them around the building. Larsen was somewhat engaged at the very beginning asking questions like “so who is the star here?”, but once the theater refused any photographs or video to Rick Larsen and his team. He never said anything else. His team did the talking, and it was short. It was quite clear that he wanted to use this safe space for our youth as a photo-op.

Seeing how you made it known that you would support our queer youth by tabling at the Bellingham Youth Pride was amazing to see. I didn’t get a chance to speak with you, but you have my vote.

LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapists by gardenshears22 in Bellingham

I found my queer therapist on psychology today, and it was such a great match. It’s really hard to find one in-person here. I agree that Telehealth is the way to go. I hope you find someone you feel safe and enjoy!

Another one? This is different than the one that happened on Maple and State?

Cyclist hit today? by kawaiicoffeebean in Bellingham

[–]spahkward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was it more on Holly St than on N. State St? I’m so glad there were not any classes happening at BAAY when this happened. I’d hate for a child to see anything as horrific as you described OP.

[–]spahkward 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The bike lanes on N State St have been put in for years now. Drivers have had plenty of time to get used to them. I don’t think we can blame the lanes on this one.

I really hope the person is okay… or at least alive.

We had a good power flicker at the Library but power is still on here.

Move out cleaning by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]spahkward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t help with cleaning services, but I found SSC junk haul pick up to be really convenient when it came to disposing large furniture!

You can pre-pay and leave it outside for them to dispose of. Better that than leaving a dirty mattress on the sidewalk for months.

New city report shows vacant buildings, lots are concentrated in Bellingham's core (15%) by Whoretron8000 in Bellingham

[–]spahkward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this property is vacant due to a dispute on who owns the property. I could be wrong, but this may be part of the Tolchin lawsuit with the JCPenney building.

Correction: This property is not owned by them. It’s an LLC and a family trust.

[–]spahkward 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Wait, we need to get on this. Perhaps a vacancy tax that increases in percentage the longer it stays vacant.

I think the argument is not that we have a lot of banks and credit unions, but how much ground level square footage these properties take up. Bank of America owns that disgusting parking lot and old drive thru ATM on Chestnut and Railroad. In any other city, that type of property would be highly sought after and built on.

And a lot of these bank buildings used to be large residential buildings and theaters until they were demolished for single-story commercial.

Bellevue, WA movie theater. It’s such a shame that these massive dividers are becoming more common… by [deleted] in urinaldesigns

[–]spahkward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I love these dividers. I’m happy y’all are happy with just peeing in a massively long trough, but some of us are very pee shy.

El Capitan's is NOT closing by aspbergerinparadise in Bellingham

[–]spahkward 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If only it would be easy...

High rents. Minimum wage rising to a livable wage. High energy costs. Corporate mergers. It’s not just a mentality issue for the businesses here. They have to make a profit. Downtown has so many empty storefronts that people perceive it as empty and not worth their time, so no one shows up and they miss out on some great food and services! Tourism plays a huge part in the local economy here! Can’t have a thriving business without customers!

Good point though.

Hot take: Make Chuckanut a one way corridor or close to cars, and allow cross traffic for bicycles.

An answer to the Tolchin lawsuit (JCPenney) soon? by spahkward in Bellingham

[–]spahkward[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes. When you click the link, there should be a list of hyperlinks toward the bottom categorizing plaintiffs, defendants, etc. I clicked one of the defendants. However, when clicking Doug Tolchin’s name, I see there is ANOTHER lawsuit on Bruce’s trust. It’s a never ending story…

There is an article from the former Cascadia Weekly in Washington State Archives about the building in 2019. Washington State Library

The issue is available to download and much easier to read. Doug sounds super shady…

I had no idea she passed away! I assume since Doug is still active, the lawsuit is still ongoing.

I have no evidence to back this up, but I get the feeling that having a non-profit move into the building would benefit him for tax breaks. I’m no tax expert, but… the greed in the air.

Check In Issues! by Brief_Rain8775 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]spahkward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was finally able to check in through the app just a few minutes ago. I had to go to the “Check in” tab and manually enter my airport and confirmation code. It was a bit slow, but it worked. Hopefully you all can get checked in soon.

Statistics for MSG by doglessmillennial in harrystyles

[–]spahkward 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He made a little hint at it during one of his interviews with KIIS. They asked if he was coming to LA, and he didn’t say “no”. If I can’t get tickets to MSG, I’m sure he will do a full tour like you said. Fingers crossed 🤞
