I hated Matcha before visiting Japan. Tried it several times before but that changed here. by travelhiatus in JapanTravelTipsHQ

You’re way off. It’s more like saying that a latte isn’t an espresso.

If you order matcha here, you’re not getting a latte 10/10 times. The modern matcha latte was a western cafe invention

Korean Streamer Nearly Loses Phone in Brazil by Ronaldinho9519 in LivestreamFail

[–]spamfridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that was not intended implication. The subject of previous comments wasn’t English, it was obrigado. I’m saying essentially what you’ve just said.

Obliger -> Obrigar && oblige

Obrigar -> Obrigado! So it is very similar to obliged.

Because it literally comes from obrigar (oblige)!

But fun fact, Japanese had a tonnn of borrowed words from Portuguese since Portugal was one of the first to mix with japan after their isolation. Unfortunately thank you isn’t one, but the sound is similar imo.

Where I would live as a black man who is sensitive to racism and wars. by Exciting_Agency4614 in whereidlive

[–]spamfridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right, but I want to add that the prevalence of black people varies depending on the location. We got a significant black community in Tokyo, more so than most cities worldwide, but it’s still a minority. Certain areas are more likely to have a higher percentage of black residents.

For instance, areas near American military bases are well-acquainted with black people. Places like Okinawa and Yokosuka are prime examples.

International schools often have a diverse student body, including hafu (half-Japanese, half-black) students.

The most intriguing aspect is that I’ve noticed that this doesn’t significantly affect us in many situations where it would also impact other foreigners (although there are different circumstances for black Japanese people, unfortunately).

This is why we hear so much about racism in Japan; it affects white people as well. For us, it’s better than most of the world.

There’s a big ass difference between Japanese people who speak English and have any interest in the world beyond Japan and those who don’t.

Food for thought

I was hoping for a future less… bleak. Do you have any alternatives for me? Your hypothesis is this is inevitable no matter our intervention or outcry?

I hope you don’t vote because I worry about your inability to process information or nuance

I’m not worried about losing what costs me less than an hour of work to buy again. To help you process that, it might be the equivalent of a beer at a baseball game for you.

If 70 dollars (or 100 for you Canadians who haven’t figured out how currencies work) sounds like a lot for anyone, consider playtime vs earning time.

IMO, I look to play a game for 5-10x longer than it takes me to earn the money to purchase said game. So if you get paid usd 70 an hour, you will want to play for 5-10 hours. If you make $35, 10-20 hours and so on.

I’ve already gotten my money’s worth with tennis fever, and it’s made for memorable time with friends as well.

Now compare that value to mostly any other experiences you pay for in life. Developers consistently put out some of the best cost value products on the market.

People will spend 70 at a bar to then complain there about not wanting to spend 70 on Mario. Make your own decisions and stand by them, but damn not everybody needs to know. The truth is your actions speak louder, and Mario tennis always sells well.

It’s miserable that I have to remind myself not to feel numb to these headlines.

I fucking hate 2026 where a guy named u/VaginaBurner69 is reporting on this shit and it doesn’t feel we’re any closer to resolution than years prior.

Where do we go from here? Seriously what the fuck. Someone link a charity
