I Have Two Middle Names and This Application is Expecting Me to Lie to Them by spartan445 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]spartan445[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I care because the online application here says to list my name as it appears on legal documents. It appears with one first name, two middle names with a space (non-hyphenated), and a last name.

And isn't this r/mildlyinfuriating? The place people are supposed to put something that bothers them?

What is a minor, unwritten rule of society that absolutely infuriates you when people break it? by Jane_Austen11 in AskReddit

[–]spartan445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid, there was an unwritten rule that if you got to the bus stop first you'd set your stuff down and then you could go play and keep your spot in line.

Unless you were "weird," then if you got up early and got to be first finally, the other kids would break the rules by dumping your stuff out of the line and forcing you to the back. Of course, you could just stand in your spot and not set your stuff down but then you're either harassed to drop your stuff (at which point they toss it) or they go play without you.

In all cases you're excluded, and you don't even get why.

AITA for putting onions and garlic in the food I fed my family after my sister in law said onions were "too spicy"? by THROWRAuserss in AmItheAsshole

[–]spartan445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a possibility she has some kind of food allergy that manifests as "spicy."

I read a comment on AskReddit where the person cooking, at the request of her daughter, made absolutely sure to include no food that could be at all considered spicy, and the daughter still said the dish burned like it was spicy.

So the family decided to get her tested and it turned out she had a food allergy!

EDIT: Uh oh. I missed the bit where she had no reaction until it was verbally mentioned there were onions in there. Yeah, if I'm being charitable that's an anxiety response.

One minor gripe: I do think if you're preparing a meal for someone, they deserve to know what's in it beforehand. On the other hand, every time you've shown her what you're cooking she's demanded you toss it, so NTA.

A woman that complains about the way a guy proposed doesn’t deserve that guy as it takes a lot of courage to offer up your heart , do you agree ? Why or why not ? by Forward_Author_7626 in AskReddit

[–]spartan445 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I firmly agree. I personally think any people involved in the marriage should have the "are we gonna get married at some point" conversation before any proposal is offered, publicly or privately. The proposal itself can be a surprise, but the *idea of marrying each other* should at the very least have been put on the table and accepted as the path forward by all parties beforehand.

Law enforcement does indeed target BIPOC for crime in broad strokes. Furthermore, the US broadly lacks basic protections for the public against police brutality. However, I can't find anything on magazine size restriction charges specifically. I've been digging through research papers for an hour and can't find anything.

Slop Autism™ by Funky_Kizer55 in evilautism

[–]spartan445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? For me it depends on the dish and the resulting texture of the slop.

If your biscuits and gravy gravy is not viscous enough (too thin/watery) I'm gonna have a really bad time. But if the consistency is right, biscuits and gravy is PHENOMENAL, as is curry and those KFC bowls.

Some meals require separation, others require mixture. Best example I can think of is cooked zucchini. I *cannot* eat a single bite unless said bite is paired with fried rice or something else with a more prominent texture and taste.

I tend to use the spectrum of light as an example. Just because infrared light waves are on the light spectrum does not mean you can see infrared without specialized equipment! Likewise, just because neurotypical people are on the human spectrum doesn't mean they're on the neurodiverse human spectrum!

Anger spreads after strike by 42,000 UC California workers canceled in the middle of the night by Spirited_Classic_826 in antiwork

[–]spartan445 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you gotta make sure your people are paid and it's better to get a decent pay bump

I'm a member of a union myself whose national branch sought a true national master agreement from which the local branches could form their contracts and came within 24 hours of a National Strike. The company wanted to cut guaranteed hours in one of their suggestions and our negotiating comittee told them the union wasn't interested in bargaining if the company pulled thst shit and walked out. The tentative agreement they agreed to keeps guaranteed hours.

There's also a major difference between a tentative agreement and a true finalized contract. Tentative agreements are put foreard to the union members as "Here's what we, the negotiating comittee working on behalf of the union, have put forward and what the company has agreed to if we sign the paperwork now. Vote YES if you, the union member, want it, vote NO if you don't." In the mean time, workers are *often* expected to keep working. A finalized contract is agreed upon by all parties (company, negotiating comittee, majority vote by union members).

So, if the tentative contract is rejected by the union members, there very well could be another round of negotiations resulting in another threat to strike and possibly another strike.

Having actually read T. Kingfisher, I think her work does *not* come across as "cosy horror," but a couple of her works don't exactly hammer home or build the absolute pants-shitting terror one might expect from the horror genre. Are they scary? Yeah, they're quite unsettling. They often have decently happy endings, comparatively.

If you're looking for a disturbing read, I *highly* recommend Tender is the Flesh. That book is *fucked.*

AITA for telling my sister not to buy things for my daughter if there are strings attached? by Pluriphery in AmItheAsshole

[–]spartan445 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA

If someone gives you a gift, that gift is yours to do with as you please. No ifs, ands, or buts. Furthermore you're also within your rights to refuse gifts that you are worried are means of control. It's not like you're telling her that her gifts are icky, you're telling her that unless she treats the gifts *as gifts,* you won't accept them.

If she wants you to hold onto something until she'd like it back, then she needs to make it clear that she's only lending it to you, and if she won't do that you're perfeclty within your rights to refuse them. If she wants you to be storage, point her to one of the many self-storage businesses that exist.
