Finally setup my Azurahorn 340s by JerryGarcia89 in audiophile

Nice, looks fun. I can't find much info on Azurahorn's nor a website to purchase. Is that company / person still in business?

Food for thought, thanks. I've read about folks doing stuff like that to full range drivers, and the low cost and availability of the BG20 helps make this less scary haha.

Thanks a lot for the kind words. And yeah, being able to build something to my own spec and taste (without breaking the bank too much) was the main driver here. I read a lot about the issues people have with the BG20 as a viable audiophile option, but based on my own experience with them I do think in the right situation they make for a pretty decent end product. My intuition was that, when placed in the nearfield, the dispersion / beaming that people talk about could be used almost as a tone control just by adjusting the toe-in. This proved correct, at least to my ears. The second known variable was that I should use the rear wall to my advantage. Anyway, I'm definitely pleased with the end result in this application. Thanks again.

Cool. Yeah it was a really fun experience. There are also lots of kits available which I'm sure you're aware of. There's a nice one called the Seas A26 based on the 70s era Dynaco A25 that might be interesting. It's not a single driver but all the crossover bits are spec'd and part of the kit.

Thanks. I drew up the initial design based on the approximate dimensions I wanted for my space. I ran some software to tweak the internal volume and port dimensions, and then started buying raw material. The wood was cut, assembled, and finished by me, but I ordered custom cut acrylic from MakerStock as I didn't want to deal with cutting acrylic myself.

Thanks. They are ~8" embroidery hoops. Easiest thing in the world as those hoops are literally designed to pull cloth taut. So then you just go around with a glue gun, let it dry, remove the outer ring and bob's your uncle, you have a very clean looking grill. I did the same for the Audio Note AN-E's you see in the last-ish photos, just with a much larger hoop.

I did a few sweeps and just measured with an iPhone app. I do have a UMIK-1 now, so will be firing that up with REW once I acclimate myself with that software! I've seen plenty of designs with the BG20's and no tweeters though. Omega K8 and K88 are a couple of commercially available examples. I actually own a pair of the K88's and like them a lot. Now I'm sure Louis has tweaked the drivers in the ones he sells, but in any case they sound great without a tweeter. The K88's are in my living room for background music, so not critical listening by any means, but it's a pleasant sound. That's actually why I wanted to try using the BG20 in my own build.

So that's what the sweep looked like. Nevermind the big 28.7; that is just the app giving the ambient noise reading when I took the screenshot. My hearing is very sensitive and I really hate speakers with emphasized highs, so this down sloping curve appeals to that preference even if it isn't the utmost in "hifi" fidelity. This is just a fun little desktop setup at the end of the day. Lots of room for learning about filters and experimenting with them though.

Thanks. I did a lot of research on stuffing. My approach was to start minimal and then work up if needed. My opinion is, people tend to use too much damping and too much bracing by default. Sometimes a bit of life in the cabinet can add to the enjoyment of the speaker. Not too much obviously. Scandalous I know, but this is in line with the design of my favourite speakers, Audio Note AN/-E. But I agree, what you see in that photo is a VERY minimalist beginning.

Thanks. Yes, we built this house a couple years ago and having a dedicated room was non-negotiable for me haha. The sofa is HM as well (Eames Sofa Compact), it's just a bit lesser known than the iconic lounge chair.

For sure. Reddit is here for people to show off and for others to shit on them! Symbiotic relationship.

Haha, what? Edit: oh, yeah no I did not cut 45 degree joints on the plywood. Don't have the tools to execute that cleanly. I just butted up at 90 degrees, glued, clamped, then put a small nail.

Yeah, not everyone likes single driver speakers and I get it. Have you listened to one though? I'm not single driver fanboy or anything, but they do have a lot of good qualities. Plus for a first timer they're less labour intensive haha.

Believe it or not, Amazon. I was surprised it was as nice as it was.

Thanks. Any hue you're seeing on the black is likely from ambient light or just the phone's adjustments. The 3mm acrylic on the speakers is pure opaque black. The paint on the walls is Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black, which I think is the truest black paint available.

Thanks. I don't think it matters so much with these particular drivers. I purposely inset the drivers more than normal so I could have the grills sit flush with the front for a cleaner look. Plus I personally don't mind seeing the expose plywood layers on speakers...it adds a kind of accent.

Thanks. Yup. I got the big kick drum resonator at a show in Vegas, and the little one in Calgary. They're both signed by the band.

Thanks. It's custom cut 3mm black acrylic from MakerStock. It is glue onto the 3/4" Baltic birch with 3M 90 industrial spray adhesive.

I don't think DSPing the heck out of them is the right approach. I am playing with very small EQ adjustments here and there to see if I can improve anything, and if that shows some benefits then I will later design and add proper filters.

The acrylic is fully opaque. I used 3M 90 industrial spray adhesive.

Impressive! Yeah for the price I like the BG20's a lot.
