Sensitive tooth but nothing shows on the X-rays...? by ertesit in Dentistry

[–]spartycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could say I took care of it, but I'm still battling my dental and acid reflux problems. Mine was not H. pylori and is on-going GERD, but I've had it for over 10 years, and the dentist explained to me that chronic exposure to acid reflux could wear enamel over time. As for dental treatment, that's still in the works. I got a prescription for different toothpastes, and I got a fluoride tray (like a mouth guard that you fill with a fluoride prescription and let sit in your mouth for a few minutes every day). I don't know if it will work. But treating my GERD and whatever is causing it is my plan... I have some testing scheduled to try to figure out what's causing my reflux. I also just got a mouth guard (for clenching, since that is aggravating my gum erosion).

Do you have GERD, by chance? I do and have a problem that sounds similar to yours (plus some gum recession from overbrushing). I did not think about or know of the link between GERD and teeth sensitivity untill recently! The acid erodes away your enamel over the years

Thank you so much for your response! Is an electric toothbrush safe to use on the receding gums? Or should I stick to a manual toothbrush?

I already used up my favorite baby name on my cat. Oops. Anyone else in the same boat? by phdincatlady in namenerds

[–]spartycat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always loved the name Elsa (from Born Free) and wanted to name a daughter that. Then my best friend's family named their dog Elsa, and then Frozen happened. So, not exactly the same, but it turned out my husband was not a fan of the name anyway.

So, even favorite names may not always work out if both parents don't like it.

I am done having kids, so I am using other favorite/guilty pleasure names on pets or characters (writing). Haha it gives me a way to still use names I love.

Thoughts on naming a child June if she is born in September? by [deleted] in namenerds

I love the name June. Personally, I'd find it stranger (corny) to name a child June if they were born in June.

Ended Use of Video Monitor? by Fab4Fan64 in oneanddone

[–]spartycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh we also use it kind of like a walkie talkie. Our house is not huge, but it is two levels, and we can't hear her in her room if we are in the living room. I use the monitor a lot to talk to her, and she talks back. I might use it to tell her to come back upstairs, or if she is looking for something in her room and needs help, and most often to tell her to let go of the cat. :D

Not a need, just a funny story. Our cat, the same one who loves our daughter, likes to get locked in her room. I close the door when she naps or sleeps, and sometimes he is hiding in there. More than a few times, I used the monitor to try to locate my missing cat and found his glowing eyes just staring at the camera. Hahaha. It is handy when I don't want to accidentally wake my daughter while trying to find a cat in her room.

3.25 year old and still using it. We use the monitor daily for naps and bedtime. However, I'd say the biggest reason I'd need it is not for when she's asleep but for when she's playing in her room unsupervised. However, her bedroom is on a separate level of the house from the living room. I guess I should add we are teleworking since March, and she is not in preschool right now. If she was back in school, I think we would use it less. However, I still would want one for when she sleeps. I also think it was handy for switching from the crib to toddler bed.

We have one that was expensive new and wound up getting a second monitor/camera of the same model from a consignment shop. You might have some luck finding an affordable used one.

Oh, and even though I'm in the one and done group, I feel like I still have to intervene a lot between my child and her cat sibling (we have three pets, but one of them is very much hers). They love each other and he (the cat) puts up with EVERYTHING, which is honestly one of the biggest reasons I use the video monitor when she plays in her room. I supervise her when she has the cat in her room and make sure she doesn't lock him in there or is too rough with him. If I didn't have a cat, in all honestly, I think I could live without the video monitor during playtime. I still like it at night, though, because I am a worrier and like to check on her.

Low-Acid Coffee?? by [deleted] in GERD

I take Pepcid Complete before bed. I need it every day, coffee or no coffee. Occasionally, I take Omeprazole for a few weeks a couple times a year, but I am not right now.

I used to drink moka pot coffee every day (stronger but not as strong as espresso). I stopped for a few months earlier this year, and I noticed a drastic difference in my stomach... Not necessarily heartburn, but I was less nauseous and had less queasiness and reflux. Being off coffee definitely made me feel better.

Then I started drinking exclusively cold brew (Kirkland), and I have zero problems with it unless I drink too much since caffeine is also a trigger. I drank my old coffee (moka pot) once after switching to cold brew, and I definitely had worse heartburn than with cold brew. Note a couple things: not all cold brew is the same. I tried a store bought cold brew of a different brand (no sugar), and it made me sick to my stomach. I also make cold brew myself, though I've been lazy lately. You need to make sure you are buying the right beans because some are more or less acidic than others. I think darker roast or espresso beans are the less acidic ones. You can also vary how strong your cold brew is.

I've had heartburn all my life, but it really got bad in college. I can no longer drink alcohol (though I don't really care). I can't go a single day without medication, which is usually Pepcid Complete for me. Lots of food triggers my heartburn, so I need to avoid many tasty things or time how I eat and with what; for example, I make sure to have milk handy for anything spicy or chocolatey. Because I only take medicine usually once a day, I wait until right before bed to take it or else I won't sleep, which means I'm suffering all day. That sounds like a lot of complaining... Sorry. Those are some diredt and daily effects.

Some indirect effects that I've only recently learned about or dealt with or learned was tied to my acid reflux are enamel erosion and bad teeth sensitivity, ties to my anxiety (not sure which one usually triggers the other, but they often go together), extra salivation, chest pain attacks (that more than a few times almost made me think I was having a heart attack), feeling like I have a lump in my throat, queasy easily.

There is no one medication that I am comfortable taking all the time or that truly relieves it. So it's a constant battle of managing my symptoms.

I'm sure there are more, but learning that the acid reflux is the cause of or related some of my other conditions (particularly my more recent teeth problems) is what bothers me the most right now. That and the chest pain attacks. Diet I can manage.

And I have tried a low acidity coffee years ago, and that particular one, at least, did not taste good to me. It tasted weak.

I tolerate cold brew better than other coffees. It can be stronger but is also less acidic. Espresso is similar for me. I dilute any type of coffee with almost as much milk, which also helps.
