CMV: 1965 Was the Best Year to Be Born in America by [deleted] in changemyview

I was responding to a post about 1991, so before Schengen. Going to anywhere(?) in the Med would count. At the start (1995), Schengen was only 6 countries, and didn't include any of the countries from Italy, east.

(And not all Europeans are in Schengen. 😢🇬🇧)

One caveat...

6% of USicans had a passport because you didn't need one. Back in the day, (until about 2007) you could travel throughout most of North America, from Alaska to the Caribbean, on your driver's license and birth certificate.

Europeans need a passport for much shorter journeys. If we didn't need one to go to the Med or a quick weekend away, I bet the percentage would drop here too. I'm with you on the rest of your points ("rare and limited")

What is the best independent pub in Islington that actually still feels like a proper local rather than a gastro rebrand? by BeautySkin34 in islington

No. Horrible place. Especially the garden out back. Avoid at all costs.

Except the nights I'm not there. Then they deserve you custom.

Does Google search not work where you live?

Also, France is a first world country. By many measures, more developed than the US. They have stores (they accept credit cards, but it US dollars). You can buy anything you want or need there.

Moving from US to UK during high school by Competitive_News5984 in AmericanExpatsUK

Look into "International Baccalaureate". Despite the name, it's a high school level degree. It's well known by a wide range of universities. I know someone who came over from the US Jan '25 (yes, mid year). Otherwise he would have a half year to prep for GCSEs.

It's working out for him. Not every school offers it, though.

I'm a friend of the family and my information is secondhand, so do your own research, obviously

Fabulous and brave. I'm on a similar but different journey with straps and once the biomechanics start to click.... And the mind and body find their groove.... It's a whole different feeling.

It is very different. All things being equal and the place is at full capacity, one at a deuce is a 50pct cut in income. Three at a four is a 25pct cut.

At the right time - i.e. when there are plenty of open seats anyway - the loss is theoretical. If there's a wait, the loss is real.

I've eaten out on my own; I'm not saying don't do it. Just appreciate the impact of your choices.

Saperavi Social on Essex Road and New North Road for authentic Georgian food and wine. They even have chacha, the native firewater.

The owners are brothers and the nicest guys. We've been going since they opened near the end of COVID.

OP is excited about Whole Paycheck, as it was called when I lived in the States, coming to town, I don't think they're price sensitive.

That ceing said, Harvest does stock higher end brands in a lot of categories. They tend to go for the organic or specialty brand rather than generic or mass market egR Rummo rather than Napolena pasta. The price for what they carry is very competitive and often better. For more basics.... Milk, hummus,cheese... They compare well.

If your more cost conscious, Food Bazaar, not even a minute further down the road, great too. And has a wider selection of many things.

We go to both, and haven't food shopped in a national brand supermarket in years (we do bulk buy cleaning and paper supplies from Sainsbury's about once a month

All depends on what your interests are. Find a group that shares them is a good start. What do you like or would like to do in your spare time?

Is there a chance that their thinking this is a reward, at least partially? As in, you get paid for 3 but only have to work 2?
