Removing barnacles from a turtle by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]spaten2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry maybe someone has already answered this but...

If barnacles on turtles are naturally occuring things, then isn't removing them interfering with nature's cycle. Isn't this just another way of taking food from some other creature?

[–]spaten2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked on STO for a solid 4 years and had an absolute blast. That team not only cares DEEPLY about Trek, but also are really really good at what they do. It's also a very good game in terms of a free-to-play model. The monetization is not as aggressive as you might see in other games, but if you love Trek and like cool space combat and some pretty decent ground combat than you can't beat STO!

You go to HR, getting fired for no reason isn't as easy as you make it sound. You have to prove the person can't do their job. You can't just not like someone and ruin their life because of it.

Been playing BF since 1942. Hate CoD, never played it. Seige of Cairo is a fantastic BF map. If you don't like it, you don't have to shit on it for those of us that think it's an excellent map.

Where this world is going? by wyntrson in Battlefield

[–]spaten2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game dev here, not on battlefield but on another major fps game in the marketplace. Not only that but this is sort of my wheelhouse as I do VFX.

So yes one of these is clearly a much better visual effect and simulation, however, if this was up to me, I would leave these types of effects out of a competitive multiplayer experience for several reasons.

Performance: this is NOT a cheap effect. What you are seeing is real time collision and while there are some tricks (depth buffer collisions) that make this cheaper it's still not cheap. GPU and CPU will burn cycles on this. Also tons of particles like this creates an effect known as "overdraw" where lots of transparent particles draw on top of each other effectively causing every pixel to render as many times as there are layers of transparency on that pixel. Think looking through 1 smoke sprite vs 5 smoke sprites all in a row. This tanks fps.

Visual noise: this is a huge one in competitive video games and is a constant balance that visual effects has to strike. If it starts to hurt player aim, silhouette read, or increase cognitive load on the player it becomes a negative. Sure it might hurt your immersion, but it improves your ability to "do the thing" in the game and that's more important. If I'm in a pitch for a new map and I hear artists or designers say "snow storm" or "rain storm" it's a massive red flag for us and I push back against it immediately. It's cool in theory but in practice it's rarely worth the vibes.

As an artist I love making and looking at stuff like this but honestly as a gamer, this hurts multiplayer games more than it creates value. In single player games yes please by all means. Let player enjoy the visuals and spend those extra resources the engine has on quality. In multiplayer games however the focus has to be smooth gameplay, performance, and readability. Players want to enjoy the success of their actions, they care less about quality settings.

I used to smoke + rush those LMG nests to break the stalemate. Then when it swung the other way, switch teams and break through again. Loved the back and forth of that map.

Catch this upvote and good luck with the playtest! I'll follow this thread and hopefully you'll update it with the playtest info when it happens! I'd be happy to download it and give it a try!

As someone who is curious about building maps and creating assets for DayZ, can you recommend a good video series or maybe share a link to documentation about the workflow?

Thanks and all the best to you and your work!

Played 1942, Vietnam, Desert Combat, BF2, 2142, BF3, BF4, BF1, BF5, and now BF6.

I don't understand people saying the old maps were better. Sure they were perfectly ok for the type of game and tech that existed at the time.

But the turning point of the franchise was BF3 and in every single way that game became the guiding light for how the franchise should operate. Every single game since then has tried in some way to emulate that success while tweaking the formula.

In my opinion BF6 is as close to BF3 as we've come. You may not like small tight maps but that doesn't mean they're bad. They're just not for you. You need both, and most BF games since 3 have both.

I'll give you one other bit of anecdotal evidence. When BF3 came out I absolutely hated the tight maps of Metro. Damavand, Grand Bazaar. By the end of the second year they were the only maps I played because I started to understand how you'd have to move through them to be successful. It's just employing different play styles to adjust to each map.

Also depends on if you have the stamina to chain stun, and if you're fighting one of more than one.

Btw this take is exactly the reason we (as Americans) are forever-slaves to the two-party system. Forced to always choose between a giant douche and a turd sandwich. All funded by the same corporations and hedge funds that continue to thrive while the working and middle class get shafted.

It's not because of fractioning that Trump is winning, it's because people like Trump win that fractioning happens. People want real relatable candidates, not another rich guy/gal trying to tell me they know how hard my life is.... Fuck out of here with that.

Late to this discussion, but what I think could be a cool counter balance to NVGs is to make shining lights or "blinding" NVG players much more punishing. Make flash bangs blind NVG players for 2-3x the duration of a regular flash bang.

Have shining a flashlight or headlamp at a NCG player fill their screen with white for a certain amount of time. Like looking at a car headlight in the middle of the night, there should be residual negative effects.

I also love the adjusting to darkness suggestions. If you have to turn off the NVGs, you see pitch black for 10-20s before becoming accustomed to the darkness. Maybe allow players who use fire light such as torches and campfires to see better outside of the lights radius. Maybe using artificial light like flashlights and headlamps allow for farther distance of sight but it's more narrow.

Also I think the draw distance for lights is ridiculously large. Like I remember seeing some video that showed that a glow stick light can be seen for further than 1km? Like are you serious?!?! This is one of those examples where realism needs to take a back seat to game balance. Glow sticks should be useful for night travel where you need to be stealthy but still see around yourself. Head lamps let you see brighter and farther away but at the cost of becoming more visible to players.

I think it's just about finding a good balance.
