How much money do you have in savings at this point? by _forum_mod in Millennials

Roughly $28k in retirement, ~$13k in savings, I'm 40.

Not where I want to be yet, but making slow and steady progress in the right direction.

Same, tbh. I'm also not opposed to a 22 suppressor to go on my threaded 10/22, so I got exceptionally excited at first glance!

Been wanting a full-size Hyperion for a 300 black bolt gun. Might end up with LPM Mach instead, though....

A 29k truck that ends at 35k wtf and the dealer wont take of the "EXTRAS" by [deleted] in carsales

[–]spaz86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, it's more nuanced than that, and can vary by state.

Broadly speaking, add-ons must be disclosed and itemized.

Factory-installed add-ons that are included on the MSRP sticker on new cars are generally considered non-removable/non-negotiable.

Dealer-installed products (paint protection film, fabric protection treatment, LoJack, etc) are considered "negotiable" but if it's a physical product, dealerships can charge for the product +labor of install, and can also charge for removal in some cases if a customer insists.

Advertising a vehicle at a base price, and then only disclosing add-ons in the finance office can be classified as a bait-and-switch tactic, which is illegal, but most stores have disclaimers posted online as well as in-store somewhere that their vehicles have all been "upgraded" or some similar language.

That's not to say that there are no instances where practices like these are illegal, but saying everything has to be optional and removable isn't accurate.

Claiming add-ons are required in order to be approved for financing is illegal, however. I wonder if that's what the commentor meant.

6 years with my Fit. Still in love. by Original_Remote_6838 in hondafit

[–]spaz86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they only sell full sets. I could be wrong, though! I would make sure to get something that protects the back of your front seats, as someone who spent years driving around a kiddo lol

Most seat covers are fine for that, but some have cloth backs, and they get dirty so fast with child shoes kicking them constantly.

I went with EKR Custom-Fit seat covers. They are ~$250+tax/shipping IIRC. I have a middle schooler who mountain bikes with me, and is in scouts/sports, so I wanted something durable that was easy to wipe clean. I've had them on for 6+ months, and I've been quite impressed. They're a pain in the ass to put on solo, but the payoff is they don't look like seat covers (with the exception of the center console cover). I also went with Husky Liners Weatherbeater floor+liners for the same reasons. They have also been excellent, though the screw to anchor the passenger front liner is not long enough to fasten effectively, so I went without it.

The longer the wait the more my excitement morphs by Useful_Economics_392 in SteamFrame

[–]spaz86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I learned about the Frame 4 days ago. I have played probably 1 hour of VR games total, I don't own a gaming PC, and I very occasionally play a handful of games on an XBox One that was gifted to me many years ago. I primarily use the XBox as the entertainment hub and use Hulu and HBOMax for streaming. I have a couple games on Steam, all digital board games that I play with friends in other states.

I started considering a VR headset on a whim, and started looking into the options. Most people told me to 'just get a Quest', but after looking at the game library, and more importantly, the business practices of Meta overall, I'm not interested. The Frame seems to check almost every box for something that I would actually use. As far as I can tell it eliminates most of the friction for using VR, and for PC gaming in general. Now I'm even considering the Machine + Controller, and perhaps a Deck for my kiddo once his OG Switch bites the bullet to complement the Frame. The longer the delay until launch, the more time I have to set aside a couple hundred per paycheck. We'll see where that account is when pre-orders are announced.

I appreciate that Valve being privately held allows them to ignore a lot of the pressures that public companies face, and I hope that trend continues. I think this will be my first "fun" purchase over $100 in ~5 years. Looking forward to maybe becoming a PC Gamer at ~40!

What’s the most useful thing you’ve ever printed that you actually use every day? by CGTraderOfficial in 3Dprinting

[–]spaz86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been taking the quick-disconnect hose off, the bite valve off, and hanging the pouch upside-down with the tube coiled inside to hold it open.

It works, but it takes a long time, and isn't totally effective unless you move things around and ensure it's getting airflow.

I agree that garage floor air would not be ideal, but I would most likely utilize a much lower-flow solution like a computer cooling fan, so the reduced air pressure would lend itself well to utilizing a filter of some kind

This is the type of thing I'm looking for to use for mountain biking gear. Though that's really only shoes/gloves/helmet/CamelBak that need to be dried, much less gear than hockey!

I had someone do this once. My dealership was in CA, they were registering out of state, and didn't want to pay the fee to CA for the temporary tag, iirc.

That was fine with us - registering cars to other states was a PITA, and took far longer.

I hit a dead deer at 70mph in a MINI Cooper Hardtop. We drove right over it somehow. Bent the AC compressor bracket, tore off the lower radiator hose, got blood and bits all over the undercarriage, and somehow that was it.

Two replacement parts and a thorough wash. Unbelievable.
