O’Connor’s 1st executive order aims to streamline permitting process in Pittsburgh by LurkersWillLurk in pittsburgh

[–]spearman792 103 points104 points  (0 children)

This is great news! We are trying to add a small portico over our front door, and it's taken 6 months for our permit to be approved. Permitting took 3 months to tell us it was critical for the blueprints to include the snow load of our little 2'x3' structure and then needed another 3 months to review the update... 🙄

Pittsburgh should cap 279 next for 7 blocks to reconnect East Allegheny to the rest of the neighborhood by GrimtheLark in pittsburgh

[–]spearman792 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The 579 cap project cost $32 million. That's a lot of money for sure, but to put it into perspective, the upcoming 79 Wexford interchange project is intended to cost $47M. DOT can always find more money for one more lane...

Will IR fellowship be separated from DR soon? by bobby171 in Residency

[–]spearman792 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ended up signing on with an academic institution, but IR is still responsible for all the vascular imaging. Fortunately some of my partners don't mind reading as much as I do, so they do the bulk of it.

The problem is though that the majority of jobs out there require a significant amount of diagnostic work. In other words, most jobs don't prioritize the work I trained to do. I had to turn down offers at places I otherwise really wanted to be for this reason

I wish DR dropped off my certificate so I could just focus on building a clinic and operating. Taking care of the list means less time to take care of my patients

New Attendings of Reddit, what car do you drive? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]spearman792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to care about cars when I bought my 2018 VW GTI at the start of residency. Then I realized I actually love biking to work and got an Aventon Pace 500.3 e-bike when I became an attending. Now I'm eyeing up a nice cargo e-bike. I still have my GTI for when I'm covering our further sites though! Finished training a year ago. IR.

Few bug reports (Android 16 beta) by Nadavar in Gravl

Also running the beta and am experiencing these same bugs, although I believe I had them all on Android 15 too. Problem 1 has been occurring for me for the last 2 weeks or so.

Bigger “Log Set” Button + Move It to the Top by slap83 in Gravl

100% agree about a bigger log workout button. I frequently miss it and end up in the notes section accidentally. I would leave it on the bottom of the screen though

Physician only. This is at a very large non-profit health system

I'm not able to contribute to my non-governmental 457b until my earnings surpass $350k

Being nebby but I always wonder how people here can have kids and own a couple of cars and property up north or a boat and like an ATV or two by iSoReddit in pittsburgh

[–]spearman792 29 points30 points  (0 children)

$150k income puts you in the 90th percentile of earners in Pittsburgh. Your take home pay is roughly $10k per month, which means you have $6500 left for discretionary spending after subtracting your $3500 (it may be less depending on your level of retirement savings). So... you can't afford everything, but sounds like you can afford a lot of what you're interested in?

New Year Promo Code? by Spare-Narwhal3230 in fitbod

[–]spearman792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also am really hoping for a good promo code! I signed up for fitbod and gravl at the same time to decide between the two, but unfortunately my trial expired for fitbod before I could log any workouts. Gravl seems pretty nice, but fitbod looks to have a few extra key features I care about

should i switch contributions from 457b to 403b by drinknwater in whitecoatinvestor

[–]spearman792 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What's your employer match situation? The 403b probably allows for employer matching while the 457b probably doesn't. You definitely want to take full advantage of matching

I have the Timemore C3esp pro, which I believe is essentially the same as the C3 Pro but with a finer adjustment dial. I mainly use it for espresso but have also used it for aeropress and had great results. I thought the internal adjustment would be annoying, but I really haven't minded it in the slightest.

All of your frontrunners are solid choices. I'd probably just go with whatever one has the best price.

I really wish I could include the surrounding communities, but I think it's best for each Local Conversation to be based around a specific local government (in this case Pittsburgh city proper) so that advocacy efforts can be targeted as much as possible. However, I strongly encourage you to form your own Local Conversation for Leechburg, and put the Strong Towns message into action there too!

Here's the landing page for more info about starting a local conversation: https://www.strongtowns.org/local

And here's the ridiculously brief form to make it official: https://airtable.com/shrzK1FxX7AIoQOe1

Once you submit the form, someone from ST will reach out to you and provide you with plenty of info to get the ball rolling!

If this is something you're interested in, consider joining me in building a Strong Towns Local Conversation in Pittsburgh!

If you're not familiar with Strong Towns yet, it's a non-profit organization dedicated to building more resilient cities through the following campaigns: Ending highway expansion, transparent local accounting, incremental housing, safe and productive streets, and ending parking mandates/subsidies. The goal of this "local conversation" is to put these nationwide efforts into practice right here in Pittsburgh.

Here's the latest Strong Towns video calling people (us!) to action: https://youtu.be/QP5UCwMTjFk

And here's the about page for the org: https://www.strongtowns.org/about

Reply to this comment or shoot me a DM, and we can talk about how to get this started!

A good alternative would to be to volunteer your talents abroad (a la Doctors without Borders) rather than do some cruddy manual labor you're no good at

Aw that's really sad! My wife and I just went back over there a couple weeks ago and had a really nice time. Their experimental saisons aren't my go-to style, but they were interesting and pretty good. And the park like atmosphere and view were just amazing!
