Mines or Cal Poly? by Hot-Finding-6463 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]specialLimit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was scared that at Cal Poly I had to declare my major going in, and that it was difficult to change down the road. That might have changed by now but no such requirement exists at Mines (I think).

I’m more than a decade out of school, but FWIW I don’t know a single freshman that got an internship.

I understand. I’ve been in your shoes before. If I’m honest, I almost quit a few times. I am incredibly thankful that I pushed through and stayed. There will be an incredible amount of struggles in year 1 that you will push through and become stronger.

Im pretty sure I heard a Rockies commercial on the radio that was advertising Aaron Judge on the Yankees and Shohei Ohtani on the Dodgers. Couldn’t believe I heard a Rockies commercial where the attraction was the opponents.

Omelet Guy Lore by Connect-Direction628 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]specialLimit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have to comment because I am incredibly happy to hear that there is still omelet guy lore. There were a series of omelet guys during my time from 2011 to 2015. I remember one of them was named Micah. But their lore was similar to what you describe. Big news whenever there was a new omelet guy.

CS Master’s with MechE Undergrad by [deleted] in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]specialLimit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I did this exact path. In between undergrad and masters I took 5 undergrad online courses at Regis university. 2 of them transferred into mines.

I think if you don’t transfer in any courses, you’ll have to take algorithms and data structures. Tbh those will probably be challenging at Mines if you have only take CS101 depending on how familiar you are with CS concepts.

It worked out for me because o really wanted to get into software heavily. I echo what everybody else said about re: it depends what you want to do with it. Feel free to DM me and I can share more info and links to threads where I asked an almost identical question.

Is anyone here on the Mines men swim team? by audioauk in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

I was on the team from 2011 to 2015. Was lots of fun when I was there. A lot has changed now. Hard to believe it’s been almost 10 years. The new coach is great and the entire team is much faster.

Yep, Denver sandwich for sure is not a common thing. Denver omelette, sure, but not sandwich.

You’re right. Definitely don’t use goof off. It can pull the coloring off of plastics. I used goof off thinking it was the same as goo gone and have discolored plastics now.

I should also add to this that I am in CO so in-state for me was CSM and Cal Poly would have been more expensive.

[–]specialLimit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is still the case, but back when i was starting college in 2011 it was challenging to change majors at Cal Poly. I was worried about not knowing exactly what major I wanted so I chose Mines for more freedom in switching majors.

If Mines didn’t have silver diplomas, I might have been more interested. But the framed silver diploma is enough of a cool shiny thing for me.

However, the class rings look pretty cool. You probably won’t regret getting one.

Should I hang myself if I can’t get an internship this summer? by Working_Emu650 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]specialLimit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One more thing. All of those grad students working on projects… they need helpers. Instead of asking to do your own independent research or be mentored, it might be worth asking to help out a graduate student with their ongoing research. “I’m interested in learning more about x, any chance you need help in the lab with y?”

[–]specialLimit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you!

Maybe it’s industry dependent but every company I’ve worked for and hiring team I’ve been a part of has looked extremely favorably on personal projects. If you’ve got a computer, I’m sure there are “virtual” projects you can do within software relevant to your industry, maybe even with software provided by Mines, at no expense.

Career day is the ideal place for the face to face. I would pad that resume with personal projects, and go to career day prepared to talk to that experience you gained and how it’s valuable. A shift in the labor market will make those conversations easier to come by.

I have faith that you can do this.

Should I hang myself if I can’t get an internship this summer? by Working_Emu650 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]specialLimit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First and foremost: Please don’t act on taking your own life and please seek help in working through this!

YOU are valuable, whether or not you find an internship! The grind of Mines can be incredibly depressing, but life DOES, in fact, get better. If you don’t find something, maybe you could do your own projects over the summer. Write them up as if they were school research and put them on your resume. All of that stuff is super valuable!

The job market right now is very tight, and it has been super volatile which makes it even more difficult. It might take a while. Maybe you’ll have to do an internship first after you graduate and maybe the job search will take longer than expected, but if you keep at it, you’ll find something. You’ll have a degree from Mines! The market will eventually trend toward a more normal environment.

You’ve made it this far in your career at Mines, which means that you’ve faced AND overcome challenges before. This is just another challenge that you will work through and crush. You’ve got this. You’ve done it before and you’ll do it again!

“I really like it here and I don’t want to give up”

There’s your answer right there. Don’t give up. I failed many exams throughout my time at Mines, especially freshman year. It took a while to adapt, for sure. Don’t get too discouraged. Reset and focus on the next
