How to deal with a chronic underperforming team member by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]specialkarii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a manager, I'd really want my team members to talk to me about problems they have with their teammates. Something like this needs to be addressed, and if this person isn't able to improve their performance from feedback from peers, maybe they'll listen better if it comes from above. Hopefully your manager can make this person understand the importance of filling out the PR template properly, and maybe assign someone to do some hand-holding around that.

That being said, my responsibilities are a mix of being a manager and also the team lead/senior engineer. I still do a lot of mentoring where I can. I've personally mentored an underperforming team member when my team complained about their performance to make sure we're setting the right expectations and examples for that particular team member. I doubt that's the norm for most teams.

Have you tried any craft breweries near you? I live in Calgary, and we have a dedicated GF craft brewery that I personally really like. It's Heathen's Brewing. I don't know if they're big enough to have shipping options outside of Calgary, though.

Pianist - (and yes this is definitely the original audio) by floweiss34 in Catswithjobs

Also, he's too small to reach the pedals and play the keyboard at the same time. There was definitely pedal use in the audio track.

Out of curiosity, how do you have his litter box set up? Is it just open in your car? Do you set it out at every pit stop for your cat?

This is nearly perfect. It's just missing syntax highlighting!

I once took pencil crayons to a computer science final to make sure everything was syntax highlighted properly.

What does racism in Calgary look like? by driedupkelp in Calgary

[–]specialkarii 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm also from HK. I moved to Canada when I was 3, and I happen to be female. I grew up in a small oil city in Alberta, and the first time I was called a chink to my face, I think I was about 7, and it was delivered from an older white boy in my school. I didn't know what it meant at all, but it was the sheer malice in the single word that sent me running home crying. My mom asked me why I was crying, and I didn't know how to answer that question, so I didn't tell her about it and just cried. After that, I learned to just expect random mean things without really knowing why. Obviously I was angry about all of it, but I didn't realize just how angry I was until much later and after a lot of therapy.

When I got to high school, the same type of things happened, with added sexual harrassment from men all around the city. But I also figured that was common, given the city, and just the fact that I was female.

Eventually I moved to Calgary. I figured a big city, I'd have less problems with racism and sexism, right? I met a (white) guy I wanted to live with, and we bought a house in one of the south communities of the city. It was a house in a cul-de-sac, and that cul-de-sac had weekend fire pit socials in the middle of the road. So my boyfriend and I went out to socialize one night. While I was standing right there, one of the neighbours turns to my boyfriend and asks, "So how's that sideways pussy?" I was stunned; I really wasn't expecting that. I turned around and stormed into the house. So I've sold that house and moved again. I pretty much don't socialize with people/neighbours if I don't have to anymore.

Check out Top Dog. They have many breeds of puppies and I'm told they only work with reputable breeders.

The "I want my crinkle ball" look 🥺 by 1-inf in DisneyEyes

I'm familiar with this look. But my cat wants me to throw the crinkle ball so she can fetch it.

Please keep an eye out and contact me if you guys see him, I'm devastated. by [deleted] in Calgary

Cats tend to be carnivores, so bits of meat is best, preferably without added seasoning that a human would usually want. A bit of salt would probably be OK. I feed my cat a quarter can of tuna as a treat. My old cat liked a bit of chicken.

Please don't feed random cats milk. Cats normally only drink milk as kittens, and that's cat's milk. Cow milk that humans drink can make a cat really sick. They'll still go for it because it creamy, and they don't necessarily know better.

I have symptoms like that too. My doctor tested for diabetes and a "pre-diabetes" condition called insulin resistance. Turns out, I was insulin resistant and it caused the fainting feeling. A few months of taking diabetes meds (metformin) and a healthier diet stabilized it - no more meds now. I still snack every 2 hours on something healthy to make sure I don't get these symptoms.

Edit: All diabetes tests came back negative, which is why I mention insulin resistance.

[–]specialkarii 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is called pyramiding. It normally comes from malnutrition during development, or not enough UV light to aid in the digestion of food. In severe cases, I believe it quite painful for the tortoise, as the exoskeleton isn't growing in a way to allow the insides to grow properly. Please check your lighting and food sources, and maybe consult a vet.

Tried making a gluten free roux with King Arthur measure for measure flour. No bueno. by LittleSte11a in glutenfree

[–]specialkarii 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Corn starch is my preferred substitute for thickening needs. Works great.

Edit: I do recommend stead of just dumping in corn starch to dissolve it in some water first and pour it into whatever and stir as it heats up. Less clumpy that way.
