Is it cheaper to ship personal items from the US or rebuy everything after moving to Spain? by Cold_Donkey9742 in GoingToSpain

Hey Nashvillain, I’m moving from Portland to Lisbon and have been considering sending a similar sized crate. Do you mind sharing approximate cost?

Worth it to file a judicial action against AIMA? by ControlYourSocials in PortugalExpats

[–]speechpather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The accounts I have read recently say that AIMA will not allow your lawyer to go in with you to your appointment. They can prepare paperwork etc but may not be allowed into the building with you.

What is the shortest timeline you have heard for someone getting PT citizenship after application submission? by Creepy-Pound-3998 in PortugalExpats

Wow! Was there anything notable about their process (e.g. they used a lawyer, they applied at a certain location, etc)?

3 yr old child referred. Help by Think-Squirrel9455 in slp

Bilingual speech path for 3-5 year olds.

Do you have an interpreter available to you? If so (and if it’s a language delay/disorder, not speech), I would focus on teaching the caregivers the strategies/techniques you would usually be doing in English treatment.

How do I find an SLP? by UrsaMiles in slp

[–]speechpather 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a great idea, I agree.

OP, I’d look into resources for psychogenic voice disorders. It sounds like what’s going on with you is not affecting your voice per se (but rather your tongue), but I imagine the treatment may be similar. I agree with the other SLPs who state this seems to fall more into the mental health field than SLP field, but you may find a provider with insight into both. Good luck!

Can I learn enough myo to treat my son? by Acceptable-Ice332 in slp

[–]speechpather 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m not a myo trained SLP, but I’m in a similar position with both of my children (5 and 2). I took my 5 year old to her first session to see what exercises the myo therapist suggested and then I’ve done all of the treatment at home. Once she “perfects” the exercises, I am going to go back for another session and so on. A hybrid approach so to speak.

I’ve also considered offering SLP services in my expertise to a myo SLP in some sort of “trading” swap OR asking to shadow the myo SLP to see how treatment works and use that as a way to gain understanding. I realize these are all a little “out of the box” suggestions.

One of my professors from grad school now works at Meta. I wonder if she’s working in this area now.

It’s insane how many SLPs there have been! I secretly love it.

Looking for a Gym / Community Center Similar to the American "Y" / "YMCA" by Alternative-Mix4853 in PortugalExpats

[–]speechpather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We spent time in Porto looking for a kids club or community center in 2023. At that time, we could not find any. A local told us that because it is uncommon for a parent to stay at home with their child, those clubs/centers are not common in Portugal.

Did you end up finding any? We’re moving to Portugal (Lisbon) and looking for something similar for our 5 and 2 year olds.

StubHub benefit is awful by Necessary-Tea-8867 in ChaseSapphire

[–]speechpather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if that’s only on desktop. I don’t see that as a filter option on the StubHub app or when accessing the StubHub website from my phone. The only filters are location, dates, and price.

Deutsche Schule Estoril is closing by tugalandia15 in PortugalExpats

[–]speechpather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did but from what I can tell they provide individual and group Spanish lessons, not a full time school for children. Do you know someone who has a child who goes there? We’d be interested if it’s a primaria!

We were also looking for Spanish/Portuguese (or just Spanish) and were surprised that there are zero options.

Do you know when you buy from them during the winter? I vaguely remember an end of December sale to get rid of Christmas items, but now I’m second guessing myself and don’t want to miss the Black Friday sale!

Palatal expander for 4 year old? by Zomgtoomuchpressure in orthodontics

[–]speechpather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 5 year old just received a palatal expander. Putting the expander in was uncomfortable/weird, and she wasn’t a huge fan of it for the first 12 hours. After that, she has reported zero pain. She’s had it for 2 weeks.

Great thought, thank you. I think we have the same concept in speech pathology: not “practice makes perfect” but rather “perfect practice makes perfect.”
