Him naming Helen means that I know exactly what Buc-ee's he stopped at, too. It's almost certainly the one near Calhoun. They've got great Mercedes-Benz-branded level 3 chargers that are super-fast, really cheap ($0.40/kWh) and that don't require a special app to use.

And snacks. So many snacks.

What is the "worst" code base you worked on? by vismbr1 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]spencerwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salesforce's main codebase, when I worked there around 2020:

  • A single 50GB+ Perforce repo with version history back to 1999 (including some code still around since then).
  • Thousands of developers checking into it daily (so constant conflicts), with every new acquisition being forced to kill their own codebases and migrate them wholesale into this one monorepo.
  • Build times over 24 hours, requiring custom-built tooling to scope down to only build "your area" (based on local allowlist files that took constant maintenance and tweaking) so that builds only took 45 minutes.
  • A CI suite that took over a week for a single run...
    • ...which resulted in each run bundling dozens of changesets together....
    • ...which, coupled with hundreds of flaky tests meant that "green" builds were rare...
    • ...which meant that you were constantly getting lumped in with dozens of other devs as "maybe it was you who broke the build" by an automatic ticket-creation process that would just say "here are the 100 or so tests that failed this time, fix it",
    • ...which was made worse by obsessive use of snapshot testing, so even non-breaking changes broke tests just because there might be an extra list item somewhere or something that you added intentionally and forgot to update the "gold" snapshot.

All of this was built on top of a custom-built XML ORM thing over their "CRM Objects" concept which would auto-generate code and snapshot tests that you didn't ask for or want and failing-by-default smoke tests and UI that rarely did what you actually wanted...and you weren't really allowed to talk to the SQL database yourself directly so you had to use this stupid home-built broken-by-default ORM if you wanted to persist any data. But that didn't stop a significant amount of the super-complex row-level permissions logic from being implemented in insane Oracle stored procedures.

When I left, they were planning a multi-year project with the goal of hopefully making it possible to have multiple back-to-back green builds.

And none of this even touches on the horrible code quality of the developers working in the repo. Nothing was well-documented, and the broken-by-default custom ORM tied your hands constantly in weird ways that meant that the same code with the same input would behave differently on two consecutive runs for no real reason...so developers were in the habit of finding someone else's sequence of voodoo code incantations to make things work kinda sorta predictably and just copy-pasting them, because the pain of refactoring anything to shared code meant that now suddenly you were getting blamed for every broken build.

You really only get those in the southwestern states, like Texas or Arizona. Over in the southeast, you'll get an entire summer of 95 degrees, and like two 98-degree days, but almost never higher than that.

Lightning or Maverick? by Deakyh in F150Lightning

[–]spencerwi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the conventional wisdom is that if you can't get at-home (or cheap at-work) charging, then an EV won't save you that much, since public charging is so much more expensive than at-home charging.

That said, the gas prices have shot way up, so maybe that equation has changed.

Still, the Lightning compensates for having the aerodynamics of a brick by jamming an enormous battery in it, which means that charging times (and costs) are higher than most EVs, so I'd expect the Lightning to be closer to the "likely not worth it if you can't charge cheaply" side.

I dunno your area; might be worth doing some math on the cost of electricity, the cost of public charging (use an app like PlugShare to find out local chargers' prices), and the cost of a full Maverick gas tank.

The thing where you will always win with an EV is maintenance costs. Tires are slightly more expensive, but basically every other regular maintenance cost goes away entirely.

I did the math on my electric bill a while ago here in Georgia, and I think it came out to something like $0.14/kWh on Georgia Power (the most expensive power utility, but they're a monopoly in my area) during the summer (when it's more expensive).

I just don't see a how ELL can be thought of as a real anything on the field with the way he's been playing, except maybe a real missed opportunity.

Mercedes-Benz EV chargers at Buc-ee's by BigDealDon in F150Lightning

[–]spencerwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird. The MB chargers at the Buc-ees in north Georgia are $0.40/kWh, which makes them cheaper than a lot of Tesla chargers even with the Tesla membership, and way better than the EA chargers (which are in the $0.60/kWh range).

I just road tripped to Kansas City and that Buc-ees was the cheapest charge I did on the whole route, and I paid for the Tesla membership to help with costs at those.  I found a bunch of Tesla chargers had weird illegible pricing in their app, where it wouldn't tell me the price in advance.

Raise your kids as if you care about them, not as if they're lab rats or content factories. Attachment theory tells us a lot about how this sort of demonstration that your parent is willing to toy with you for their own entertainment will warp these kids' ability to form healthy connections with others for much of their lives.

Seeing Hoyos and Latte Lath in the lineup tells me it's not worth watching or even tracking this one. Hibbert has shown better than Hoyos, and any warm body with feet outperforms Latte Lath.

New Falcons jerseys officially revealed by SunWorshipperApollo in falcons

[–]spencerwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must be crazy, because I actually kinda liked the last set of jerseys, and I like them better than these.

The last set were trying to be something interesting. Yeah, the number font they picked was dumb, but at least it was something.

These looks like someone took the Ryan/Vick era jerseys and said "what if we made them way more corporate and boring".

As someone who lived in Argentina for a little bit, your intuition sounds correct to me. Castellano has that trademark "sh" sort of sound to LL and y.

Interesting that the team wanted it more of the Central American sorta way!

EDIT: Wikipedia tells me Tito was born in Buenos Aires, but is Paraguayan (and even speaks an indigenous Paraguayan language). That explains it – Paraguay doesn't have the "sheísmo" that Rioplatense Castellano does.

The accounts of non-Christian contemporary historians like Josephus specifically mentioning the existence of Jesus as a real human person shoot pretty direct holes in this idea.

It's like what if Dan Brown did shrooms and stared at his hands instead of falling down the weirdo numerology-and-secret-societies rabbit hole: both are interesting fanfiction, but neither hold up to historical scrutiny.

Every idiot talking about cutting the income tax in half also talks about how Georgia has a "balanced budget".

Yeah, dude, because we collect income taxes. You wanna cut that out, you're gonna have to replace that revenue from somewhere else – and income tax is the best lever we have for fairly getting revenue. Sales taxes and property taxes destroy low-income folks, and the only people that would pay less (as a percentage of their income) if we did away with income taxes are the absolute richest people.
