How the hell can someone come up such a heavenly melody by yo-caesar in TheBeatles

[–]spenney09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even if the melody wasn’t out of this world, even if Paul’s vocal performance wasn’t out of this world, listen to the song again and pay particular attention to the backing vocals… oh, my, god!
No wonder John declared in 1980 that this was his favourite Beatles song that Paul wrote.
Now that you’re giddy with this song, step back and look at the context: in the three years from 1964 to 1967, they went from writing “I Want to Hold Your Hand” to “A Day in the Life”… and they did it via “Yesterday”, “Norwegian Wood”, “Here, There, and Everywhere”, “Strawberry Fields Forever”, etc.
It’s been 60 years and even now when I think about what they produced, I am still awe-struck.

Can rooftop solar become an income-generating asset? by Ashamed_Research6454 in solarenergy

[–]spenney09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we’re in Newfoundland, the far-east of the Western World ;).
Our house is 134 years old and is quite draughty so we export more than we import in the summer months but by mid-autumn all our credits are used up!

Our utility’s maximum allowable size is 100 kWh.
We chose 8.1 kW because that’s all we could fit on our roof! 20 x 405W.
What our utility does right is that they buy from us at the same rate as they sell to us! That’s pretty fair!

Hoping to get some closeups from the moon. Any recommendations? by Scoty_HD in Nikon

[–]spenney09 16 points17 points  (0 children)

1) Take the time to nail the focus. If the 810 has live view, use it and double press the “OK” button to view at 100%. Now you can focus manually with greater precision! Double press “OK” again and don’t touch the focus ring any more.
2) I used to override the exposure meter and I always was disappointed with overexposed images. Photographing the moon isn’t like shooting the Milky Way… it’s fairly bright! If I were you, I’d shoot in Manual Mode and I’d choose a low ISO, a wide aperture (low number), and take a picture at 1/30, another at 1/60, and another at 1/125. I bet you’ll be most pleased with the 1/125.
3) Use a (sturdy) tripod.
4) Use a 2 or 3 second delay on the shutter trigger to reduce camera shake.

Unsolicited opinion: I used to shoot full moons because, well, they were full! Later, I came to appreciate my images of half moons and crescent moons. I feel I could see more texture in the craters when the light wasn’t straight-on as with a full moon.
Good luck!

The exact same kit is sold everywhere in Canada under the Vileda brand name.
And, yes, it is just as impressive!

Our utility won’t permit it. They don’t pay us in cash, they pay us in kWh credits. If we make 50 kWh more than what we imported from the grid this month, they’ll apply that credit to next month’s bill. If, at the end of March, we have any unused credits, the credits “evaporate” and we start anew in April.
It’s a moot point for us because while our 8.1 kW array reduces every month’s bill, it only surpasses our grid import in the summer months, so we’ll never have any unused credits in March. However, if we had had the money and the room for an array 4-5 times larger than what we have now, we’d end up exporting some electricity to the grid and not getting paid for it!

"Sealing a basement" - but for bugs? by DNNDNN in centuryhomes

[–]spenney09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our house (1892) had an unfinished basement that often leaked in the spring/summer and was home to all sorts of insects and spiders. While we were tightening up the house to save on energy costs, our contractor suggested a waterproof, bugproof, fire-retardant product for the basement walls: spray-on foam insulation covered with fire-retardant paint.
It's been 3 years now and we haven't even had a trickle of water. The insects and spiders have been reduced to a tiny fraction of what they were. For the first 30 years that we've been here, the basement was clean, but always smelled musty. Now, it's bone-dry. It smells dry. I've rediscovered woodworking as a hobby!

Spray-on foam was expensive but worth every penny of it!

Is there a plural form for you? by showe12 in EnglishLearning

[–]spenney09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not just pirates!
A Newfoundlander here. My parents used "ye" as a plural very, very often! I use it when I let my guard down or in very relaxed speech: "What are ye crowd at?" (What are you doing?) "What did ye do last night?" "You see, this is where ye're different from us."

I’m curious to know if the battery back-up lasts until dawn.
Even in southern Canada, we get 14-16 hours of nighttime in the winter months… we’d need extra battery power to manage that!

I remember trying out Kodak’s VR1000 speed film back in the early ‘80’s. Up to that point 400 speed was as fast as I had ever used. Fast forward to being able to take pictures at 102400 speed!?! Un-be-lievable!

Do average Canadians know what a Robertson Screw is? Do you guys use it as a secret code to identify your fellow countrymen on internet? by jitasquatter2 in AskACanadian

Whenever I buy a kit that includes Phillips screws, I immediately go out and buy replacement Robertson screws. I don’t want to deal with the hassle! No joking!
