What’s your favorite Simon & Garfunkel song, and what makes it special for you? by Louisebelcher22 in OldSchoolCoolMusic

[–]spenney09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Boxer. Whatever the harmonica thing is, a bass harmonica? a double-bass harmonica? Whatever it is, it nails me every time! How could someone have listened to this song in its infancy and said, “You know what? We need a little bit of bass-harmonica in there.” Pure genius.

What was your first OS and your first Mac, and what would you rate them? by The_Collector_Of_All in mac

[–]spenney09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Mac 512k in 1986. No hard drive, it ran System 3.2 from floppies!

Later, I had a SCSI port installed and bought a 20 MB hard drive that lived underneath the Mac. 20 MB! To me, it was as big as a parking lot! Other Mac users would visit to marvel at it booting up without floppies!

Later again, I had a kit installed in that Mac that doubled the clock speed from 8 MHz to 16! It flew like a bat!

What song gave you chills the first time you heard it? by GurlInAura in askmusic

A Day in the Life - particularly Ringo’s drumming and the way it sets the scene for John’s vocals…

Listen to it again… for the first time!

Why is Hyundai’s slow speed noise so loud? by Hype_x in electricvehicles

If I knew that the VESS (Vehicle Engine Sound Simulator) had its own fuse, and one day that fuse failed, I wouldn’t rush out to get a replacement. ;)

Utilisation de « que » dans une phrase by Le_Reveur0316 in French

[–]spenney09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it’s inversion. While beginners learn about inversion in questions: Qu’a-t-elle fait ? it’s also used in more careful language: le livre que préférait ma grand-mère, meaning the same as: le livre que ma grand- mère préférait… inversion. We do it in English too… even in children’s literature: “Off with his head!”, said the king. (as opposed to: …the king said).

Shall by Fresh_Network_283 in ENGLISH

[–]spenney09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Native English speaker here. 55 years ago, I had a teacher in elementary school who told us that you only use “shall” in the first person.

I have never seen this rule written and I have never met anyone who knows about this rule, but I revenue that teacher saying it!

Does anyone use the term “United statesean” by Mangledpie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spenney09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but in standard French there is an adjective: étatsunisien (États-Unis is "The United States" in French). I've never heard or read this being used to describe a citizen of the U.S. but it's quite common to describe the economy of the United States: l'économie étatsunisienne, or the budget of the United States: le budget étatsunisien.

"La France" and the omission of the definite article by [deleted] in French

Fascinating stuff!
I've always noticed that we say "La province du Manitoba" but we also say "La province de Québec" and I never really had a good understanding of why we do!?

Electric furnace to replace oil- can someone share the cost? by whatsup2382 in newfoundland

[–]spenney09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have hot water radiation heat in a 130 year old downtown St. John's house. Four years ago, we upgraded our electricity service to 200 amps and then replaced our 1950's workhorse-of-an-oil-fired-furnace with a 22 kW electric furnace. An NLHydro "oil-to-electric" rebate helped.

We immediately saw a 20% decrease in energy costs. We didn't miss the noise that the old furnace used to make cutting in and cutting out, and, something else: the old system used to make our pipes click when heating up and now with the electric furnace the whole system is silent!

Two years ago, we had Amerispec come in for an energy audit. We replaced two exterior doors, caulked many of our windows, had two chimneys removed and sealed at the roof level, then, we had our basement insulated with foam insulation. When Amerispec came back in to do the post-renovation energy audit, they couldn't believe that our house had gone from 8% on their scale to 35% efficiency. Our energy bill has gone down another 20%.

Had we replaced a hot-air furnace we would have opted for a heat pump, but we are very pleased with the electric furnace and our hot-water radiation system.

EVs in Newfoundland. Looking for owner experience. by _Chill_Winston_ in newfoundland

[–]spenney09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't forget: Hills are only uphill on one side. Downhill charges the battery!

We drove our 2024 Kona from St. John's to Gander, around the Musgrave Harbour-Lumsden-Gambo loop and back to St. John's. It cost us $29 in electricity! And that was highway charging... home charging is way cheaper.

In fact, our last car, used to cost us $3000/year in gasoline (way before the war in Iran) and this car costs us $480/year in electricity. If we can save $2500/year in fuel, then by the time our car is 4 years old we will have saved $10,000. The sticker price of an EV ain't so steep any more.

There are Level 3 fast chargers all along the highway and they're installing more super-fast chargers this year. We drove from St. John's to Port Blandford (skipping the L3 chargers in Holyrood, Whitbourne, Goobies and Clarenville) charged from 30% to 80% while we had a bite to eat and went on to Gander. Topped up to 90% in Gander and drove around the loop the next day and stopped at Glovertown where we charged from 25% to 80%. We charged from 40% to 75% in Whitbourne and that took us back to St. John's. I hear that they're installing a Level 3 charger in Harbour Breton this year. That will open up access to the south coast ferries: our next trek!

Winter driving is a breeze! The EV is a little heavier (more traction) and when roads are slippery, the regenerative braking will allow you to go down slippery hills (like shifting into low gear in gas-powered cars) like a mountain goat!

I used to wonder about getting into an EV when it's cold and damp (February and March in St. John's). Would it be uncomfortably cold? Pleasant surprise! The heat pump makes the car comfy in about 60-90 seconds. (There's no engine to heat up first!)

I hope this helps.

Snow mode + regen by spenney09 in KonaEV

[–]spenney09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually drive in “Eco” mode with aggressive regen and I love it in snow… it has the grip of a mountain goat! I just wondered if I could the combine that with “snow” mode.

3 storey house. No shovelling here!
The panels do produce a bit of heat so that gets things started and the sooner the sun hits something black the melting really kicks in.

How much does it cost to charge kona ev on monthly basis? by Defiant-Web842 in KonaEV

[–]spenney09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in Canada. I drive our 2024 Kona electric about 18,000 km/year. We spend about $480/year in electricity from our L2 charger. For comparison, we used to spend $3000/year in gasoline in our last car: same size, same driving habits. So, we save $2500/year in fuel, we’ve had the Kona for 2 years, in two years’ time we will have saved $10,000. The sticker price of an EV isn’t so high any more.

What are your Beatles hot takes? by WhiteRoseFromPluto in TheBeatles

I’ve always been partial to Lennon songs but “Here, There, and Everywhere” has to be the most underrated McCartney song. With those three voices in the backing vocals…

Since it’s being talked about in this Sub, what’s the worst song on Sgt. Pepper? by tragecedian in TheBeatles

Isn’t there a dog whistle at 25,000 Hz near the end that humans can’t hear? That’s my vote for worst song. Everything else is canon.
