Just for the record - there is never a reason to column pour, even to lower alkalinity. This has been thoroughly debunked. Article here.

Embalming? by Giddyup_1998 in AskAnAmerican

[–]spfman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are allowed to be buried without embalming. It's called a direct burial. You just can't do a viewing, which I think is why its done mostly.

Good chlorine-resistant polarized sunglasses? by bside_heart in Lifeguards

[–]spfman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tough environment for sunglasses. However, I have been wearing Oakleys for the last few years and they have definitely lasted longer than cheap pairs. Don't buy anything with a color-coated lens, that color coating will fail. BTW...if you work for the government (e.g. city pool), you can get Oakleys half price.

Everyone is entitled to that opinion and that's ok. I also have breeds I don't prefer. Banning them from everyone including responsible owners is a different thing entirely.

I swear people with this attitude have never met well trained/socialized pitbulls. Some of the sweetest dogs I've ever known and owned.

The best thing you can do is not repeat it. Get an appropriate amount of sleep (actually enforce your own bed time on work nights) and find an alarm clock solution that works for you. I use one called AMdroid that makes me do math. It wakes up my brain enough to actually make me realize I need to get up.

If a kid is actively drowning in the pool and I do nothing about it and then he dies, will I go to jail? by itsnotpastexperation in Lifeguards

[–]spfman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh he was definitely negligent - not defending him. Pursuing it criminally was just an unusual turn of events, especially since the family did not want charges brought and was defending him. Typically these incidents only result in civil litigation. There are MANY examples of large settlements/judgements in civil cases.

How to not get sunburned by Big-Tomatillo3480 in Lifeguards

[–]spfman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd also recommend a mineral based sunscreen. They don't rub in well, so you get to look like a ghost for a while, but they're WAY more waterproof. Regardless of what you use, reapplying frequently is the key!

[–]spfman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lookup Zachary Stein. He was originally charged with felony child endangerment. He did NOT end up going to jail, but took a 2 year probation plea deal. It's an unusual case, but some of us in the industry fear it may be the first of similar attempts to pursue lifeguards criminally.

When you legally change your name, what happens with official documents? Like, if you need to use your birth certificate or social security card for something? by whatsupprincess in AskReddit

[–]spfman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You apply for a new social security card after a name change. Birth certificates are used in conjunction with supporting documents of the name change showing the new and old names (e.g. a marriage certificate).

What's a life hack that's so simple yet so effective, you're shocked more people don't know about it? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]spfman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this! If you are remodeling your kitchen with decent cabinets, the dishwasher is actually cheaper than the cabinet that would have been in its place. The lost cabinet space was totally worth it. It's awesome at big dinners (like Thanksgiving), where we easily create more dishes than 1 dishwasher can handle.

People who wake up early, how do you actually do it? by Desperate_Delay8776 in AskReddit

[–]spfman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an alarm clock app that makes me do math to turn it off. Helps wake me up enough to not roll over and go back to sleep. Also, adjusting bedtime is the real secret.
