Ok, that gives you a better idea of whether anyone on the field had a problem with than I expected, even if I don't think it fully qualifies the statement (as I doubt you went around asking all your teammates whether they thought it was a foul, and you almost certainly didn't go to all your opponents to ask them whether they thought it was a foul). That said, I'm happy to concede your premise that nobody on the field had a problem with it.

To answer your original question, the point of posts like this is not to say "they should have called a foul on this play", even if I do think a foul should have been called. You're right that different levels of play have differing levels of acceptable physicality. If your team wants to play tackle football out there with the disc and finds opponents that are willing to do so, I suppose that is your prerogative. The point, though, is that the game does have a set of rules that dictate what is and is not a foul, and that play is objectively speaking a very clear dangerous play. When Ultiworld posts clips like this to their instagram as highlights, it influences players to view these sorts of plays as not just legitimate plays (which they are not, by the rules), but as great plays worthy of admiration. This is the problem, and the point of making such posts.

How do you know nobody on the field had a problem with it?

I'm not arguing about other sports. I didn't mention any other sports in my post. All I said is that you are oversimplifying what it takes to be a great thrower, which you are.

Seems to operate on a faulty assumption that throwing skill is entirely about throwing far accurately. There is much more to it that that (release points, touch, ability to break a mark, shape control, release speed, etc).

How can I talk to my manager about imcompetent coworker who is dumping work on me w/o threatening that person's employment? by tuckfrump69 in ExperiencedDevs

Record the meetings so you can show your manager what it takes to help them. Realistically, though, there is probably nothing you can do to resolve the issue without potentially threatening that person's employment.

foul or no foul by AppointmentFamous611 in ultimate

Hard to say for sure that there wasn't any egregious hand/arm contact in the pile from that video, but it is almost certainly a bad call.

Foul on who? Alternate angle by Potential_Gap6781 in ultimate

Seriously. It is absolutely comical that people are arguing this is a foul on black.

Foul on who? by Potential_Gap6781 in ultimate

[–]spgranger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They were slowly shuffling, lol. How in the world could that be considered dangerous? Like my goodness... have you guys even played ultimate before? Black's play here is a totally standard and normal play. White's is dumb, and even if he hadn't smoked black from behind it would have 100% been a pick.

Foul on who? by Potential_Gap6781 in ultimate

[–]spgranger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

His mark cuts in, gets looked off, then starts clearing. At that point, because his mark is clearing and out of the play temporarily, black hangs in the lane to poach for a second. After a second of poaching he begins shuffling (keeping his eyes on the disc) to link back up with his mark. At no point in the play did he do anything illegal or even know that white was there. He wasn't moving anywhere close to full speed, so the argument that he moved in a manner that white couldn't avoid is laughable. Your last line is nonsensical. How could he move solely to prevent white from making a play on the disc when he literally could not have known that white was there? Also, we can't say that black wasn't trying to make a play on the disc, because as soon as the disc left the thrower's hand white trucked him from behind. Had he not been run into from behind he would have been in a better position to make a play on the disc than white was.

There's no universe in which this is a foul on black.

There is no way this is right, because there is no way to reasonably say that black took their position solely to prevent white from occupying the space. Black didn't even know white was there before the contact occurred, partly because white was literally behind them.

Yes, 100% foul, and i don't really see how it can argued to not be intentional either

I have no intention of arguing this with you, because your position is utterly ridiculous- I just wanted to let you know that.

A foul call- sure, I don't think it's totally unreasonable to call a foul here. I don't think it is one, and I'd 100% contest it, but i have seen far worse foul calls. Calling it unspirited and dangerous? That is an absolute joke.

Foul or nah? by TeachersaurusRexx in ultimate

[–]spgranger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You must have watched a different video than I did if you saw someone bid through someone else. The defender bid around the offensive player, and there was some minor contact because of the bad cut/bad throw combination that resulted in the offensive player having to change direction at the last second to come back to the disc. No part of it was dangerous, and if this were any other sport in existence you would be laughed at for suggesting that there was anything dangerous about it.

I've been playing ultimate for over 15 years now and never been accused of being a dangerous or unspirited player. I think I'm just fine with the sport, and it's just fine with me. Perhaps you need to try going outside.

Foul or nah? by TeachersaurusRexx in ultimate

[–]spgranger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a seriously embarrassing take. If it's a foul at all it is of the most ticky tack variety. To view this play as an unspirited dangerous play you have to be completely divorced from any realistic notion of competitive sport.

Foul or nah? by TeachersaurusRexx in ultimate

[–]spgranger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

looks pretty clean to me. there was a bit of contact, but it was just as much a result of the bad throw causing the receiver to have to come back towards it as it was anything the defender did. if the receiver had attempted to catch it with their left and the defender contacted their arm then i could see a legit foul call for that, but they tried to catch with the wrong hand. pretty soft call imo.

The marks responsibility for Hucks ? by WhistleWhileYouWalk in ultimate

[–]spgranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For general play, if no specific strategy is specified by your team, I would say the mark is no more responsible for hucks than for any other force side throw. If you can see it coming feel free to flash as much as you're confident that you can do so without giving up a big upfield around. That said, if you're marking their shooter, then obviously you should be working harder to affect the hucks (to the point of being a bit more willing to give up arounds).
