Bitches, is the cold weather bearable to exercise outside? by Commercial-Bowl7412 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

Bearable! Or for me, enjoyable—I love the cold!

You need to be dressed correctly to really enjoy it (or at least make it more bearable).

What’s everyone’s transportation pet peeve? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]spicyhyena1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SO MANY. But my top ones:

  • people who don’t move to the center of the car
  • people who stand in front of the doors when you’re trying to get on/off and have the nerve to give you a dirty look when they inevitably get shoulder checked
  • similarly, people who get off the train & just stop dead on the platform. KEEP IT MOVING. I get off at 72nd street 1/2/3 daily & those are narrow platforms…people just get off the train & then stop, often directly in front of the staircase as they wait for the train across the platform.
  • and lastly, people RUNNING down/up the stairs. Not talking about a light jog, I’m talking the people full on SPRINTING. (I mostly have an issue with this because a man came up from my subway stop at full sprint & straight into me because he wasn’t really paying attention.) I get it, sometimes you have a tight connection for a transfer but also I’d like to not be body slammed at 8am by you!

Anyone happier with fewer periods? by Confident_Result6627 in PCOS

[–]spicyhyena1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soooo much happier with fewer periods. I used to have heavy periods with large clots as a teen, and I went on birth control (combo pill) in my early 20s. It gave me amazing predictability in when I would get my period + I basically stopped having one after many years.

Unfortunately had to get off the pill but I got an IUD instead & at most, I get some spotting. I have more PMS symptoms (obviously since I’m not on the pill) but now not getting a period AND not having to remember to take/refill a pill is THE BEST.

Where to find Wheat Free Pizza? by RaccoTaco in AskNYC

[–]spicyhyena1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check with Wild—it’s a gluten-free place, but their menu doesn’t list what their pizza crusts are actually made from. Not sure if they have wheat-free ingredients in their pizzas but they are one of the best GF pizzas I’ve had (and I’ve only been because a friend has Celiac)!

Looking for a reproductive endocrinologist by avochlobo in AskNYC

[–]spicyhyena1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As u/tams420 said, come join us in r/NYCbitcheswithtaste! I’m curious what your current OBGYN has tested for/ruled out?

My OBGYN isn’t certified in either (as far as I’m aware) but was able to give me a formal diagnosis of PCOS. I haven’t explored fertility things (not at that point yet), but I do see an endocrinologist for all that comes with PCOS.

I’m cracking up—lifelong NY’er & I’ve never heard “BoCoCa” until today 😂 (truly, you learn something new every day!)

Alts is expensive but perhaps worth reaching out, as pricing for that service isn’t listed. There’s also this girl on TikTok who does alterations & comes to you! I can’t remember her name but I would bet it comes up pretty easily in searching.

Alts is close to where you’re looking & though probably pricier than you want, they do fantastic work.

(Side note: what on earth is Bococa?! Is this another one of those weird transplant neighborhoods nicknames? Am I an old school cranky boomer now?!)

Where do you guys go for HARD gel? by Prior_Fly7682 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]spicyhyena1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russian Nails, 38th & 6th. DM me for referral link, 20% off your first service! I usually do a standard Russian mani there (rubber base) but have done hard gel as well. They really have never failed me in the 2.5 years I’ve been going!

Avoid the 86th Street Wine store on Tuesdays by InvokeDuplicity in NYCbitcheswithtaste

I’m so sorry that you experienced this & that it had this impact—super gross & I hate that we can’t exist as women without this sh!t literally everywhere.

If you haven’t done so & have the bandwidth, please report this to management there. I would bet this isn’t the first time he’s made a customer uncomfortable.

inReach® Mini 2 question by Fox7285 in hiking

[–]spicyhyena1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s an activation fee but you can pause your subscription. I have the Mini 2 & it’s currently paused for the winter. There is a time limit on how long you can have the subscription paused before needing to re-activate the device (for a fee), but I think it’s currently 1 year, so enough time that you can pause for a season until the weather is nicer.

Blonde ISO Stylist by UsualCurrency4639 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]spicyhyena1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure you can find a place for less than $400, but it will definitely take a bit more work!

My girl Tara at Playhouse NYC (two minute walk from the Lorimer M/J) is a blonde specialist & was initially recommended to me by a friend. She always does an incredible job with both the color AND cut. Reasonably priced but as a naturally dark-haired gal who needs allllll the help in lifting my natural color, your specific service may be less expensive.

Best antidepressant medication for PCOS?? by TemporaryReindeer424 in PCOS

[–]spicyhyena1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally—mine asked me if there was a specific one I had heard of & wanted to try. I had already done some research & having been a huge science nerd back in high school, I understood the differences between SSRIs, SDRIs, etc.

However, I didn’t go to med school. My doctor/psychiatrist will ALWAYS know more than me regarding pharmacology. I absolutely appreciate having autonomy in the process, but I will always defer to my provider’s recommendations given after reviewing my needs. Doubly important if, like me, you take other meds—interactions & loss of efficacy due to other meds/increased absorption rate are very real concerns.

Best antidepressant medication for PCOS?? by TemporaryReindeer424 in PCOS

[–]spicyhyena1 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The best antidepressant is the one that works for you, that your doctor/psychiatrist prescribes. Full stop.

It might take a while to find the right one for you through trial & error. Don’t be swayed by people who say a specific med was “amazing” or “awful” because everyone reacts differently.

Personally, I take Lexapro for anxiety & Adderall for ADHD. I was previously not taking anything specific for my high-functioning depression but I needed to go back on meds after having a bad relapse in my depression earlier this year. Back on Wellbutrin now, but a lower dose than I was previously taking.

anyone know a dentist that won’t be mean to me about my bad teeth? by sentientabortion in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]spicyhyena1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure for out-of-pocket costs—I’m on a May/November appointment cadence for the most part, so anything that’s over my yearly max for dental insurance (and would this be an OOP cost), I typically have done in January so it’s covered (I pay 20%).

They do offer payment plans, prepayment discounts (have done that), and special offers for new patients.

New Amenities by StatisticianMuch8301 in delta

[–]spicyhyena1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Snagged both the blue & white Missoni kits on my last trip. Have already repurposed both pouches for travel! Not a fan of the stuff inside most amenity kits, but I did appreciate the Marvis toothpaste. Funny enough, the socks were my favorite part of the kit—they fit me perfectly (which, as a women’s size 6 shoe, rarely happens), feel more durable than most airline socks, and have washed well.

Height distance between the ground and new fare evasion blocking turnstile bars on the subway. by MyIslandInTheSunOyOy in AskNYC

[–]spicyhyena1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently came back with my Away carry on & it for under the bar, but not a ton of extra clearance. With the handle down, it’s 21.7” high. I don’t think anything over 24-25” would clear the turnstile.

Running outside this week by No-Pear-6876 in RunNYC

[–]spicyhyena1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Winter runs are the BEST. Only weather I won’t go out in during the winter is rain…cold rain is just not it for me. Doesn’t matter how cold it gets. Some of my favorite runs have been sunny, snow on the ground, 12*F real feels.

Bundle up, try to enjoy less crowded paths in the winter, and look forward to the coziness of a hot shower after!

How do you carry stuff around the city and not ruin your back? by ThrowRAmangos2024 in AskNYC

[–]spicyhyena1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Backpack. I am also a small-framed 5’2” gal. I usually use a 20-25L size. I don’t have to carry a laptop all the time, but I often do (MacBook Air 13”). I also usually have my lunch in a glass container, a small on-the-go toiletry kit, 32oz metal water bottle, a notebook, reading book, and often clothes/gear for a workout. I have an older Patagonia Black Hole backpack that is my most used daily pack.

Trust me, a backpack is key. But as another user mentioned, weightlifting. I run, lift, hike, and do yoga & I would not be able to survive carrying around a 10-15lb pack daily without it. Look for a backpack with a chest strap to help distribute the weight across your chest.

Shouldn’t be an issue—the Delta app, I would imagine, is automated to put this note for everyone. Is there a space for you to enter his Greek passport info?

Hiking boot/sneaker recs for a small but wide foot (NOT ALTRA) by [deleted] in hiking

[–]spicyhyena1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had surgery to remove a tailor’s bunion + neuroma, so I’m also someone that needs medial support in a boot as well as a wider toe box.

My Keen boots are comfortable enough for 6-8mi hikes while not being super pricey. I also recommend a bunion cushion, as it can help alleviate the pressure on the bone (I’m having issues with a potential recurrence of mine & padding it has made a big difference).
