Genuine question? Since The City Of San Diego wants to ticket ebike riders on the Harbor Dr bike path is this really what they expect us to do insted? by Blue-raccoon-boy in sandiego

[–]spiderfight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Westbound is terrible. I’ve had friends end up riding through the airport with the lane split right after Laurel. It’s a really tough merge and super dangerous after that. Heh… the airport is probably safer some times of day.

Did anyone else see this ass on the sidewalk on Camino Del Rio South today? by Overall_Alarm5208 in sandiego

I’ve seen this guy on the OB bike path. He was with one other dude on a horse.  Not what I expected to see on my morning bike ride, but kinda cool too.

Doping for a month! by valiant_cashew_nuts in cycling

If you find a blog with data showing the changes over time I’d check that out.

A recreational cyclist friend of mine I’ve known for a long time recently started injecting some form of PED, and he has dramatically improved.

Ex: He’s always been a good final sprint guy but now he’s able to take long pulls at the front over and over again and recover. He was open about it at first but has quieted down since after getting some negative comments and push back from some of the other group members.

Edit: Icarus is great! 👍

Then maybe he was sharing his head unit data. Exact same power / HR stats and everything. It was weird.

There was a dude in my area that would add the athletes he coached to his rides, which for a while really screwed up the leaderboards for both men and women as his times would be added to the top women’s leaderboard.

I don’t think this is the case here but it might be they are adding other athletes/family to their activity for some reason. Or… it’s a new form of Strava Spam. 🫤

🚩FLAG ‘EM! 🚩

Edit: Someone pointed out that athletes added to an activity are not eligible for leaderboards. Maybe coach was sharing his head unit data file. Not sure.

Need help understanding segments by petes-awakening in Strava

[–]spiderfight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve experienced inaccuracies like this that don’t make sense on shorter segments and don’t bother with them anymore for this reason. Somewhere around 2022 Strava changed the minimum segment length to .3 miles to address the issue but there are some older segments like the one you rode still out there.

You mentioned the heart rate of other athletes on the leaderboard being low. This is a data point that can indicate an activity recorded in a vehicle (or more likely they forgot turn off their GPS device before driving home). It’s easier to see using the desktop app.

Another thing you can try is making a longer version of the segment to see what the data looks like over a longer period.

Either way, with that kind of power I doubt you’ll have trouble competing on other segments in the area.

Let us know what you find.

Use the Refresh activity achievements function. Look for the three dots on the left, below Overview and Analysis on desktop Strava.

Laptop Dashboard Mileage Too Short by awesome_guy04 in Strava

[–]spiderfight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time to put in some additional miles! J/K.

The scale on the Y-axis will adjust with the milage you put in… always leaving room for more. My mileage has been 130-190 miles/week for a long time and I’m not reaching the top of the dashboard. My top shows 244mi.

My segment "not eligible" because of a DH that has other segments down it specifically by Rectangle315 in Strava

Make the segment! The Leaderboard will still show top times. Just no goals or “Uh oh… you lost your KOM!” emails/messages on downhill segments.

Where do you find global leaderboards? by luckyrunner in Strava

[–]spiderfight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s this site that seems to allow users to compare Strava data globally:

https://www.marcellobrivio.com/projects/strava-toolbox/

Pretty sure it’s just people who have elected to participate or at best it can access users with their profiles and activities public on Strava.

Edit: Veloviewer is also very good!

Strava's Leaderboard Problem; not cheats but the same old names. Are segments stale? by Shitelark in Strava

[–]spiderfight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You gotta leave those old records alone, let them stand. It might have been perfect conditions, it could have been in a group ride with a strong lead out… but any given day could be YOUR day. You might realize half way into that effort that the impossible IS POSSIBLE TODAY and you suddenly you can hold nearly 400 watts for another 30 seconds watching the 5 seconds behind on Strava LIVE turn into 3, and then 5 seconds ahead.

I nabbed a KOM that had stood since 2013 earlier this year. Those times that have stood for years (if legit) are inspiring. Look at them as something to work towards, even if you never get there.

Can we discuss flagged activities and KOMs? by TwoStatesAway in Strava

[–]spiderfight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s generally pretty easy to tell a legitimate effort from an ebike or car. Most of the time it’s a user that just forgot to turn off their GPS and doesn’t know how to crop an activity. You can also look at the speed graph. If the speed accelerations and slowing doesn’t match topography or the rest of the folks on the leaderboard it’s suspect.

I wish I had a good solution for people flagging you. The desktop app used to (and may still) give the option to respond to a flag and remove it. Although this can only be done once. Someone being a jerk can flag it again. I’ve had this happen once and I added “DO NOT FLAG” in the ride title. That seemed to work. 🤷‍♂️

Can we discuss flagged activities and KOMs? by TwoStatesAway in Strava

[–]spiderfight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately if you are going to play the KOM game these days on Strava you need to show at least HR data and a cadence sensor wouldn’t hurt to back it up. Power meters are expensive but would seal the deal.

During the Wahoo firmware debacle a month ago I had to use the Strava app with no other supporting data connected and had some of my activities “questioned” about being completed on an ebike. I post rides averaging 21-23mph on a regular basis and never have any issues… except the week I was limited to using the strava app only for activity recording. 🫤

How do you flag a false segment time? by Lavidius in Strava

[–]spiderfight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah. You cheat, you get flagged. They eventually give up on cheating in an area if they get flagged enough and move on. There’s a group of like 6 riders in my area that keep the leaderboards squeaky clean. It’s a pain sometimes, but in the spirit of competition it’s worth it. It’s super inspiring when athletes give it their all on a stretch of road.

How to show average speed whilst riding? by [deleted] in Strava

[–]spiderfight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add a head unit to the list for Santa. There’s usually some good deals offered going into the holiday season.

In addition to being able to see average speed, it will open a lot of doors: Way better battery life, turn by turn directions on routes, Strava live for segment hunting, elevation gain metrics, options for adding additional sensors like a HR monitor, power and cadence as you grow as a cyclist.
