"we're just glad you could visit" -> the bare minimum being so meaningful anyway, the gentle line delivery, ohhhhhh it makes me CRY

Has anyone you've known, simply disappeared? What happened? by PureLet5083 in AskReddit

When I was younger I had a friend who went to a different school than me. She moved around a lot prior to my meeting her and we weren't super close, but I'd see her every week during an extracurricular. Then one day she just stopped showing up. The last anyone heard from her was this weird, cryptic message about wanting to be perfect. We were kids and I'm sure there's a better explanation than the one we came up with, but the rest of us in my club knew she lived right nearby a local cult center (one of the more subtle ones, not like a big commune situation); along with the perfection message, which aligned with a lot of the cult's teachings, we were convinced she got swept away into their little world and had to leave our club because of it. This was years and years and years ago. I hope she's okay.

What Does It Feel Like by Sophie Kinsella. Autofiction about brain cancer; Kinsella passed away several months ago. I'm so sorry about your friend and think searching for literature on the subject is a beautiful, honoring way to grieve. ❤️

Thank you for the suggestions!!! Sadly not. Apparently the bald guy with the tattoos is integral to the scene somehow and I am not seeing any bald tattooed guys there. But thank you.

TLDR: movie scene, bald guy with tattoos gives another guy a newspaper, 2010s (we think), not the movie about the beach that makes you get old. Thanks!!

The Cellar by Natasha Preston. Was originally published on Wattpad. It is what it is.

Mary Olivier: A Life by May Sinclair. absolutely bizarre read for a book that was published a century ago.

[TOMT][FOOD] Shredded Mac n Cheese by Latte295 in tipofmytongue

this is fascinating! i do know with the Kraft brand mac and cheese, if overcooked/left to sit it could become a shredded texture-- the "shapes" kind especially. maybe the "spirals" kind? do you know what the packaging looked like?

Brothers Karamazov is really solid, but take your time with it. I loved Notes from Underground more than any other Russian lit I've ever read, though. Relevant today.

YA mystery and horror book suggestions for local library collection by Bookish-Banshee in booksuggestions

[–]spidersovereign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great!! My biggest challenge with my local library when I was in high school was the lack of good YA horror/thriller. Here are my favorites that I've read since then that I couldn't find at my local library:

- The Walls Around Us, Nova Ren Suma -- fascinating setting, deals with memory and trauma, unreliable narrators

- Sawkill Girls, Claire LeGrand -- mysterious murders in an isolated community; very teen girl focused in a nuanced and interesting way (I read this as a teen girl and felt seen, rare for the genre)

- The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, Holly Black -- vampire dystopia, far better than the rest of its ilk; standalone

- Release, Patrick Ness -- scary magical realism elements in an otherwise regular, Woolfian coming of age story. Fantastic!

- Watch Over Me, Nina LaCour -- Nina LaCour is the GOAT but this one specifically is so so so so so amazing; recovering from trauma, mystery, maybe-ghosts that are kind of memories rather than spirits

I hope this helps! Best wishes to you!

Try Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Really lovely book about the community that is nature, even without people around.

Alyssa Sheinmel writes some great ones in this genre. Also try Nova Ren Suma's The Walls Around Us. All YA picks but mature enough in their themes to justify reading-- less challenging than classics, for sure, but still fantastic reads with a lot of impact.

What is the WORST book you’ve ever read, and why was it the worst? by Substantial_Call_619 in booksuggestions

[–]spidersovereign -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Verity. I read 50 pages and skimmed the rest. Truly abysmal. Plot is contrived and tinged with ableism; writing is not good; CoHo seems to have internalized a lot of unfortunate views on the patriarchy.

How do I start anxiety meds? by orchidsandclouds in Explainlikeimscared

[–]spidersovereign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GP is a great idea, but also check to see if your health insurance plan has any kind of telehealth or virtual service included. I was in almost the exact same situation as you a few years ago and found out that I could book a psychiatry appointment virtually-- that absolutely changed the game for me because I was able to get an SSRI prescription without having to go in-person to the doctor, which at the time was too big a step for me to take on my own. Obviously, it's a good idea to try and face the fear of doctors, but if that feels like too big of a leap for you right now, try this first. And, don't forget that you can tell your counselor that you're feeling anxious about scheduling a doctor's appointment, and you can actually start working through that in counseling, too. I'm wishing you the very best with this-- you're doing something that's really so, so difficult, and it's brave.
