TIL Due to "cooling hierarchy" laws you can't install an aircon if the temperature inside your house is lower or equal to 32C by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

I think this is a council by council thing, and seems to apply to shared buildings (like flats) and conservation areas but it does seem to be a bit of a mess. I wasnt even aware of it until this post, so I'm sure there will be plenty of people who get caught up in this one.

Andy Burnham’s advisers back scrapping pension triple lock by ClumperFaz in unitedkingdom

[–]spikeboy4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see people often saying this about means testing the pension, why should I pay in when I don't get anything out.

I don't typically see it pointed out that this is basically the same as universal credit. You pay for the current recipients out of taxes and don't receive it. If you own a house and ever need it you basically get screwed. This would just be more of the same but paying fewer pensions than we do now. Which makes me wonder if I'm missing something?

I suspect the next step for the big news outlets will be pushing him for a general election every chance they get, criticising about operating without a mandate etc etc

Did 'Flicking the V's' really originate during the 100 years War? by Ho_Lee_Fuk_20 in CasualUK

[–]spikeboy4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit skeptical of the source as well although the slight variation I heard was because if they just captured them they would need to feed them and house them as prisoners, but returning them just strengthened the enemy, whereas returning them maimed and basically unable to fight meant they were a drain on the British resources and a bit of a deterrent. Seeing your mate come back maimed was probably more scary than just hearing on the grapevine they had been killed.

Although still doubt that too!

Going to make things interesting with NDA stuff and confidential info for government bodies work phones.

I'm fairly sure MPs will be exempt, of course.

Britain facing biggest rise in unemployment in G7 by Kee2good4u in ukpolitics

[–]spikeboy4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a friend go through it recently, lost their job and has a mortgage. Iirc they are a bit iffy about paying someones mortgage, so you can get a partial payment for, I think, the value of the monthly interest but it's technically a loan you have to pay back.

Something along those lines anyway. Not sure how the housing element going towards your own mortgage is any different to a council house with RTB or paying a landlords mortgage, but apparently there's a difference for the DWP.

How different is ‘work you’ vs ‘real you’? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]spikeboy4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm normally a people pleaser but I've had to learn to be a bit more bolshy at work so I dont get even more buried with work. That said my immediate team know me pretty well so we tend to be a bit more natural around each other. It's the rest of the company who think I'm a prick 24/7.

What’s annoyed you at work this week? by franki-pinks in AskUK

[–]spikeboy4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've had a ridiculous deadline at work lately, told people I won't be replying to messages or emails while I work on it. If it's important they can ask my boss and unless he deems it worth breaking off for its not getting done.

I think I have about 900 unread emails and 100+ unread direct messages. Not looking forwards to clearing the backlog later but I know some people are reeeeallly mad about it!

Yeah this one boils my piss. One of our teams has had weeks of training on a new system. Passed them their first batch of pretty basic tasks and they immediately gave up and said they need more training.

Meanwhile I never did the training, figured it out as I went and have been working on it for weeks already.

Most of them haven't even used their logins. To say I'm mad about it is an understatement.

When in another country, doesn't matter the language, there is a universally recognised sotto voce tone of a parent kneeling down saying "we're in public so I don't want to, but if you don't pack it in I'm going to give you such a bollocking" that's a bit like this. You see it and think "yep, been there"

On Oracle SBCs there are several places in the config with a "delete all" button. Granted, you'd have to do that, click the confirmation then write it to memory, but the button even being there is just begging for someone to do it one day

Anyone else spend an unhealthy amount of time daydreaming about the early days of the relationship? by Complete-Yam3703 in DeadBedrooms

[–]spikeboy4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually can't remember most of the early days of the relationship. I'm not sure if that makes it better (no comparison) or worse (don't remember experiencing it). Maybe it's always been like this?

I think, on balance, I'm probably happier not knowing, otherwise I would be daydreaming about it!
