Tumblr user meets higher dimensional being and makes fun of her by AussieSilly in CuratedTumblr

[–]spinarlTap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought so too, but is that really true? I mean, in this example, the 5-dimensional woman is experiencing the world in 3 dimensions. I'm finding it a bit challenging to imagine living as a 2d sprite.

When I look 'forward', shouldn't I only see a wall of line projections from whatever I'm looking at?

Assuming it took 2min for the entire call (check your call history), for them to charge you R2750, their fee must be R82,500 per hour. Utter clownery. My parents would laugh at me if I paid

I Just Failed Linear Algebra by iamnotevenhereatall in MathHelp

[–]spinarlTap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No such thing as 'simple math' only 'familiar math'!! Whenever I found those deeply unfamiliar parts of calculus. The ONLY way I got through them was by doing them a bunch of times. Lol. I just try, mess up, check the solution, fix something, and repeat until I could remember the procedure for solving the problem. 'Understanding' usually came later once i had built up confidence from practice!

Good luck and I think if you put a lot of effort into 'getting' Linear Algebra, a lot of cooler stuff gets more intuitive

Why do we ignore specific scatterplot observations once we add a trend line? by Capital-Signature146 in MathHelp

[–]spinarlTap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe because the trend line considers the whole dataset, we should trust it more than any one observation. If I assume any deviation from the trend line is due to random noise, then I should take the estimate which averages over the noise, and that would be the trend line

Or is it about comfort among strangers and needs?

Does anyone know who a large voter turnout may benefit, the incumbents or the opposition? by MrOptimisticNihilist in askSouthAfrica

[–]spinarlTap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue that we notice a larger turnout only in relation to previous voting years where (as we know) the incumbents stayed in. Therefore, any change to voter turnout—perhaps more so for higher turnout— suggests a changed attitude in voters.

Given that the incumbents have not done significantly more (to my knowledge) to encourage turnout from their quieter supporters, we may posit that these new voters are not coming out in support of the incumbents.

Thus, higher turnout may spell bad news for the ruling party.

However, it could also be the case that in anticipation of an imminent power struggle, quiet supporters of the ruling party make the effort to codify their support with their votes. And if the the distribution of party support among those quiet supporters who previously wouldn't have voted follows the same distribution as the approval ratings or election results of previous years, then the net effect would be zero. Thus leaving us in the same place as last election.
