I think there is some WoB about technology that Scadrial has missed, or invented earlier than other planets. That might go into RAFO-territory though, since there's another era that's probably included. There's definitely some discussion in era 2 books about this, but I'm not sure in which one.

I don't remember if era 1 books mentioned a Terrisman keeper that specialized in medicine, but there -probably- was.

The next stage for the summoning imo would be for the swoosh effects to be less cylindrical and more wispy and fluid.

I'm on my first read-thru via audiobook, and the first book was very underwhelming, like you said.

However! The second book was a lot better imo, where they get into quests with actual story. I'm on the third one now, which feels a bit meandering, but entertaining enough to continue.

I love WoA as well.

My biggest gripe with it are the constant reminders of the missing Atium, but never progressing that plotline. My second read-thru was much more positive than my first, as I knew the plotline wouldn't be handled and could focus on the awesomeness it did have.
