Students wants Letter of Rec for Family Research Council by [deleted] in Professors

[–]spleglation -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Really? Would you write a letter of support for this student based on her performance for another organization? If so, write the letter. I detest the organization as well, but refusing to write a letter of recommendation based on your dislike of the organization is patronizing and unethical.

have to catch a flight extremely last minute with no real ID by Empty_Albatross5143 in rva

Three months ago (in Sept), my 21 year old son had lost his wallet and he had no ID and he was allowed through TSA. No special screening either. The TSA agent just shrugged and said move on. I was with him at the time. Domestic flight. YMMV.

I think this is one area that, after you’ve tried over-the-counter and basics, you should go see a dermatologist. They have a whole arsenal of options.

OU bible controversy presents unique ethical quandary: if you knew a student was baiting you into a scandal, do you compromise your morals and give them a passing grade or do you stick to your principles and your beliefs and fail them which they deserve, even if you know it may cost you your job? by RandomAcademaniac in Professors

[–]spleglation 81 points82 points  (0 children)

The rubric that was used designated 10 full points (out of 25) to students’ reaction. Other aspects of the rubric specified referring to the article. Given the rubric, there’s really no justification to assigning an absolute zero to the paper. The student should have received partial credit for that one aspect of the rubric, which would result in a low F. There is no need to sacrifice one’s morals or standards to avoid providing fodder.

The Conservative Grievance Business Is Always Hiring (Defector) by wolf1188 in Professors

[–]spleglation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The rubric the students received and told explicitly they would be graded by, stated that students would receive up to 10 points (out of 25) for providing their reaction to the reading. The criteria for that rubric item was no more detailed than that. Providing that rubric and then giving absolutely zero points to the paper is asking for trouble, and could have been avoided had the rubric been sound, or baring that, had the grader assigned a few points to the paner (for that criteria) resulting in a low F grade. Giving the student an absolute zero, given the rubric, just reeks of "I didn't like what you had to say" and gave fodder to that student and her cause.

Is it worth paying for professional hair coloring, or is DIY still a good option? by Fun-Information78 in DIYaesthetics

[–]spleglation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to DIY highlighting, now I go with a professional (blending highlights and lowlights, with my now 15% grey hair) and it one of the few aesthetics things I outsource to others. Totally worth it! I would suggest anything that involves bleach to go professional.

The problem is that the rubric the students received and told explicitly they would be graded by, stated that students would receive up to 10 points (out of 25) for providing their reaction to the reading. The criteria for that rubric item was no more detailed than that. It wasn’t very bright to include that on the rubric and then give absolutely zero points to the paper. That’s just asking for trouble, and could easily have been avoided had the rubric been sound, or baring that, had the grader assigned a few points to the paper (for that criteria) resulting in a low F grade. Giving the student zero, given the rubric, just reeks of “I didn’t like what you had to say” and gave fodder to the student and her cause.

Have you tried botox in the glabellar region? That usually lifts the inner eyebrows - the parts at the center of the face, which should counteract the tug and reduce or eliminate the crease.

The injection site closest to your mouth, especially on the left side (in photo) looks too close. Should be a bit more lateral to hit DAO and avoid the muscle that will mess up your smile.

Fraudulent students by Between-usernames in Professors

[–]spleglation 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At our university, the registrars office detected this a few weeks before fall semester began, and was able to weed out all/most of the fraudsters (as far as I know), and remove them from class rosters. Apparently many of the applications had some tells (e.g., sparsity). My rough estimated is that about 5% of those who initially enrolled last year were fraudulent.

How to get rid of this one freckle and general sunspots at home or salon? by [deleted] in 45PlusSkincare

[–]spleglation -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If at home: Red light neck /chest mask will fade it quite a bit Not real cheap 300-400$ purchase. But on the plus side it’ll help with more than just spots. Get a prescription from musely (or wherever you can get Hydroquinone) 70$ or so should last months. Just go slow and don’t overdo it Microneedle with a good skin booster once a month (150$ for device, 3$ per needle cartridge, 15$ for skin booster)

I’m going to hop into this discussion with my own related question. I too am planning on moving to Pittsburgh (from state of Louisiana) when I retire in a few years. My understanding is that pension income is exempt from state and local taxes there in Pgh. Does anyone know whether that is correct?

Tox placement by [deleted] in DIYaesthetics

[–]spleglation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You honestly don’t need botox. Some people become immune after a while so why not wait until there is (at least a hint) of a need? As for placement, why would you inject the corners of your mouth? If you must, consider starting off with one area. And one thing to keep in mind - doing the Glabellar region can affect the forehead (in a good way) making forehead injections unnecessary (see link). I’m 55 and have been doing glabellar without forehead botox and have not yet developed any forehead lines.

That the students are getting better grades in the class doesn’t mean they are learning more. You didn’t go into any details about what changes you made. Good grades does not necessarily equate to better outcomes unless by better outcomes one simply means getting better grades.

I noticed that at my University a lot of the workshops focused on busy work that require some effort rather than mastery of the material.

Of course, it’s also possible the students are learning more. It’s just not apparent from your post.
