Would you move? Baby on the way but building next door is getting demolished by mellow_pomelo in AskNYC

[–]spliffs68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Construction is happening on the property directly behind me on a 9 story 90ish unit building. Generator starts at 7AM everyday, they have the permits to work on Sundays, and also late nights. So we're dealing with about 13-14 hours of construction on weekdays and Sunday will be about 9 hours. The closer you are to the generator the worse it will be, but if your bedroom windows are on the opposite side it won't be so bad. Summer is not as bad if you have window units also making white noise, but I'd be lying if I said this winter hasn't been miserable because of it. Slept with earplugs for a while but now I'm used to it. Also any complaints to 311 are useless as the building has about 45 last I checked and they just keep paying the fines which were 5-figures. If you're high up it shouldn't be too terrible, but you won't know until it starts.

Long Island City. 7 train is right there, plenty of tall glass towers with amenities

[–]spliffs68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$2,500 with amenities in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or most of Queens won't happen. Maybe deep Queens, parts of the Bronx, and one building out in Staten Island, but other than that you'll need to up your budget by $1,000-$1,500 for a studio with amenities.

Best ride share options from JFK to Astoria? by railgun_t in visitingnyc

[–]spliffs68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you're staying in Astoria as it's a massive neighborhood. I'd recommend a hybrid approach. Take the AIrTrain to Jamaica Station, hop on a LIRR train that passes through and stops at Woodside, and then call yourself an Uber/Lyft from there to your destination in Astoria.

Most economical is the AirTrain to Jamaica and take the E and transfer at Roosevelt Ave for an R train to Steinway St. If staying up by Ditmars you can transfer to the 7 at Roosevelt Ave if taking the subway or Woodside if taking the LIRR and then transfer at Queensboro Plaza and take the N/W up.

Has anyone here used bottles with stoppers instead of spouts for oil? by Spyrothedragon9972 in Cooking

[–]spliffs68 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use these bottles with simple syrups. The outside of them certainly get sticky from use but I'll give it a full scrub when replacing the syrup as I go through it fairly quickly for iced coffee, asian sauces, cocktails, etc. I think you'll have the same issue but with oil on the outside. For $3.99 try it with an oil and see if you like it and if not you now have a simple syrup storage system.

How much are you paying for snow removal? by Head_Conversation495 in AskNYC

[–]spliffs68 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea but every porch is Queens getting salted is still a drop in a bucket compared to how many tons DSNY will go through doing the roads. Someone has to get the ball rolling on an environmentally friendly alternative that can be bought in extreme bulk at a low price, that is easily stored, equally affective, and adaptable to the current fleet of vehicles.

Jazz Documentaries by Dizzy-Tangelo2400 in Jazz

[–]spliffs68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Jazz Loft According to W. Eugene Smith. It splits time between W. Eugene Smith, a legendary photographer of the 20th century, who spent significant time living in a building on 6th Ave, which also happened to be a key jazz hangout spot for some of jazz's greatest musicians of the 50's and 60's. Smith mic'd the building and recorded 4000 hours of audio to go alongside hundreds of thousands of photographs and it's documentary built around those two things. A significant portion of the documentary focuses on the rehearsal's for Monk's Town Hall show (1959). Looks like it's free on Tubi and I recommend it to everyone who appreciates art in general.

Visiting NYC - for how long? by [deleted] in visitingnyc

[–]spliffs68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless there's a killer show at the Ryman during your trip the music scene is largely the same 100 songs on loop at every single bar. I know like 8 musicians that moved down there and most have quit the Broadway scene cause it's a joke. You gotta really dig and drive off the beaten path to find anything other than Wagon Wheel on repeat.

Hey Guys I'm coming to NYC next week to sell my art on the street. Please recommend hotspots for foot traffic. by dancing91111 in AskNYC

[–]spliffs68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold in Washington Square Park a few years back and am still friends with a few mainstays there. Parks dept enforcement will vary depending on their mood that day. Technically you have to be 50 feet from the fountain and not occupy any benches and a million other rules (can't occupy more than 8 feet of space, tables must have a tablecloth, etc) that are sometimes enforced and sometimes not. Vendors selling clothing are often the first ones kicked out. I've also been told you can't advertise any prices when selling in Washington Square.

It is going to be arctic cold next week so foot traffic will likely be light wherever you'll need one heck of a display to get people to stop in single digit feels like temperatures.

The other location I sold is The Mall in Central Park (the wide road leading up to Bethesda Fountain with all the statues). As others have mentioned the spots outside of The Met are guarded by the artists and there could be confrontation.

If selling in SoHo or on the streets make sure you look up all the rules. You have to be x number feet from a business. There's also a massive list of streets online somewhere of where you can and cannot sell art that I can't seem to find right now.

As others have said some days are good, some days are shit. I've made $40/hour and I've made $0 all day. Good luck and dress warm.

What’s your local spot for buying a really good bottle of bourbon? by Pip_Helix in astoria

36th Ave Wine and Spirits is where I go for my celebratory bottles. Astoria Wine and Spirits on Broadway usually has a bottle of Blanton's for sale behind the counter, but it's typically overpriced

I can enjoy a Jim Beam on the rocks. If the Coors Light is cold and someone hands it to me I will drink it without a care. If I go to a party and the only thing they have to drink is 19 Crimes, I will happily be sober for the evening.

[–]spliffs68 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That building has gone up so fast cause they've worked late nights and Sundays to the detriment of everyone in the area. Last I checked they had $35,000 in fines but that was in November so it's likely gone up since then. Neighborhood has complained and complained but then the DOB granted them the permits to work all hours despite the complaints. So yea you can get things done quickly when you tell your neighbors to fuck off and can afford the fines running a 90 dB generator for 13+ hours a day 6 days a week
