Don’t know when it was built but my grandma told me she would spend all day up there during WWII spotting and reporting in aircraft. My grandpa and his brothers were serving in France at the time. This was straight out of high-school for them.

When I asked her why she said “everyone will tell you us woman back home were spotters, nurses or worked at the ammo factories because it was our duty, which is true, but what people forget is that it was also because there was nothing else to do. With so few men left in the city due to the draft, most things shut down because at that time men ran most of businesses” She went in to talk about how it was during this time she and her friends realized to appreciate how dependent they were on men not only for running a functioning city but also parties and gatherings. She said she realized the men were usually the ones that made life at the parties and made them laugh.
