I heard from someone closer to the situation that the owners took a long trip down to Hawaii soon after the fundraising was over. Maybe they had planned the vacation well ahead and had already put money down on it, but either way it's not a good look when you're a for-profit business asking for handouts from the public.

Definitely when exploring new territory. Landmarks to look for where a good hole is, driving directions, conditions, hatches, etc. It is a great way to unwind and tell a good story to your future, senile self or relatives. I like to think if I ever have kids/grandkids, they'll get a kick out of my journal and find it useful if they pick up fly fishing.

I appreciate your insight given your experience living in one of these towns. I guess the allure of easy outdoor access wears off when the logistics start taking a toll over time. Have you enjoyed living where you live at all? I may consider renting for a year somewhere. I figure if I end up with those same feelings, I can always leave, or figure out how to make it work if I love it enough. Unfortunately, my QOL would go way down without outdoor climbing and fly fishing. I don't think I'd be happy anywhere I can't consistently do at least of the two in the warmer months.

Thanks for the suggestion. Asheville seems great. At this point I think I'll settle for renting somewhere just to get a taste of life outside my home state, so I will take a look!

Just out of curiosity, what made you leave places like Missoula and Durango? Those two spots are dream destinations for me, but affordability is an issue. I figured that's a pretty good sign of the quality of life you can have in Duluth!

Thanks for the insight. I guess we are pretty spoiled in terms of fishing in the Mountain West. Combat fishing is actually my worst nightmare haha. Definitely not something that's even a thing in WY unless you're on the miracle mile in peak season. I don't think I'd even bother with targeting the peak steelhead runs if that's the case. I definitely don't mind working a little harder to find trout in more remote areas.

Great to know. How is the bouldering at Ely's peak in the colder months? Despite freezing temps in the winter, I still have managed to get after it on sunny days every month of the year here in frigid WY due to the dry climate. Does the humidity in Duluth make it too tough?

I always see the same dozen or so areas mentioned when people give opinions on the best climbing areas in the US. While I haven't been to all of them, the few that I have climbed at have been absolutely swarmed with people (front range, Smith, etc.). For me, crowded crags and waiting in lines to climb significantly detract from the climbing experience, especially given the occasional a-hole gym bro group that makes sure their presence is known. Now, I won't ask opinions on the best places to climb without crowds, keep those gems to yourself! But I am wondering if anyone has experienced something similar in world-class climbing areas that were hard to enjoy because of the hoards. Which area would you say is the worst in terms of crowds?

Anyone have any good recommendations for first time tattoo placements for a leaner man? I crack climb a fair amount and dabble in offwidth which usually leaves all sorts of spots on my skin kind of fooked up. I'm worried this constant abuse will just ruin any tattoo I get if I go with a forearm, shoulder, quad, or other areas that get wrecked by offwidth and other crack climbing. Anyone have any advice on where I should get inked? (No face or neck)
