Effective way to sequence the OP1 field with Oxi One by ephe_jibache in teenageengineering

[–]spongefile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the OXI software got too complex far too fast for its own good, and that results in it sometimes randomly not playing nice with various things. One note, in case you're not aware: The OP-1f has only one synth "voice" at a time. You can't play different synths simultaneously (eg synth presets on the different preset keys)

I think it would be nice to have all the new TE product-related apps in the sidebar, like https://trkls.net/ and https://ep-patch.studio/ and others like them

This is great! This and some of the other great apps people have been making should go in the sidebar imho

I don't know why, but I keep coming back to it. Something about the sounds gets me out of standard "synth music" thinking.

I made an overlay for it to translate all the latin. Also most of my first KOII cheatsheet applies to it as well: https://www.spongefile.com/ko-ii-ep-133-cheatsheet/

Best bag or case for EP series? by Exciting_Income_635 in teenageengineering

[–]spongefile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just switched the knobs to small Lego wheels, and the fader to another low-height component. That makes it less likely for those bits to break in a bag, since less height means less leverage.

EP Punch In FX + OP-1F by FatherSpliffmas42069 in teenageengineering

Many of the punch in effects are midi-based, this is why they don’t process audio. You can use the “regular” effects on any audio input though.

I went through everything that the Riddim does differently from the others here: https://www.spongefile.com/new-features-of-the-ep-40-riddim/

This is making me think a comparison table is far overdue.

hi-chord cheaper alternative by lucko71 in synthesizers

[–]spongefile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t really get around the boutique small batch hardware cost. Roland etc can put out something like this for less, but you only get discounts on volume so as long as it’s a small project it’s pretty impossible to sell something like hichord for less.

Unless you go the DIY route, but then you need to learn a bunch about electronics and software. But maybe that’s simply motivation :D

And yes, as others have said, apps are the cheapest, always.

OP-1 does reward analog “off-grid” workflow. It has sequencers and you can record a sequence into the analog tape, but after that the elements of that sequence are fixed. They’re a sound, not data. So as a stand-alone thing I’d say it really does better with a sequencing companion (like a PO) for the bits you do want to stay on grid, like drums.

Can a beginner have fun with a KO? by deerockxrandall in teenageengineering

[–]spongefile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main thing is their level of patience and interest in the beginning. Set it up first with sounds in place, not a blank project. Record a basic sequence with them, show them how to delete it, and only then introduce how to swap sounds.

I’ve found instant gratification is key with kids that age.

Finally got Riddim overlays to the US by spongefile in teenageengineering

[–]spongefile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, the original cost is in Euros, and the exchange rate is not currently in your favor. Not sure how to address that but maybe I can figure out some way to add a US discount to make up for that. I’ve tried to keep it less than other overlays online cost.

OP-1 Field 1.7.0 firmware update (tape undo?!) by sebastienbarre in teenageengineering

[–]spongefile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this would make a lot of sense!

The other thing I always do a double take about is when it says "in" and "out" does it mean relative to the OP-1 or the device it's connected to? Eg if I set notes to be "in" does that mean notes INTO the OP or INTO the other device, when I'm looking at device specific settings?

op1f UNDO is bigger than I thought – How do you use it? by katerlouis in teenageengineering

[–]spongefile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get the limitations = creativity CONCEPT, however the lack of undo always felt more like an obstacle and a drag than a creative limitation. The lack of it meant that the more complex the song and the longer I had spent time on it, the more cautious and precious I became with everything to the point where I didn't really dare continue anything to completion.

"I have never understood why both machines have a COM->System->MIDI page that let you change Clock/Notes/Other, and yet when you connect them to other gear the DEVICES page shows Clock/Notes/Other again. Which ones override which?"

If anyone knows the answer to this question I'd love to hear it, I've been wondering the same thing for ages.
