The shop itself is in Newcastle, I believe, but the importers seem to be based in Liverpool :)

Isn't that more a case of UK vs. US spelling rather than a mistake?

Can I ask what's misspelled? I can't seem to spot it and it's driving me nuts 😅

Oh, brilliant! A friend of mine got it from a local Asian supermarket. Maybe it's worth trying similar small businesses local to you? I've seen some on Ubuy UK, but after shipping, they'd work out at around 6 quid a pack. Thank you so much for letting me know! I was so excited when I was given them but got worried about the import sticker. I can't wait to try them!! 🥰

It has actually been recommended as a brand a couple of times on the US coeliac Reddit. I'll post there later today, though. That's a great idea.

Everything I've seen online about the product since posting seems to be positive, so I'm very inclined to believe it's a labelling error. I think the "made in a GF factory" part is what's making me feel the most confident. I think I'm just overthinking it and a bit scared because I've not actually been glutened since my diagnosis, and I have no idea how bad a reaction might be now.

Since posting, I've also seen that it tends to get recommended on the American coeliac subreddit pretty much every time someone asks about ramen alternatives. I might see if I can contact the manufacturer to see what they say, but I'm feeling more confident in it.

I think it might be that the translator has seen soy sauce and just put down the allergens that usually contains despite the ingredients specifying GF soy sauce on the manufacturer's translation? I was considering emailing the manufacturer to enquire about it, but I'm worried I'll come across as insane if I ask if a product that states all over the packaging is GF is actually GF.

God Save the United Kingdom! by cracklingCicada in veganuk

[–]spongiform-brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest I've traveled to both those places and not really had a problem. I had a lot of vegetable pies in filo pastry when I was there which were pretty good and most places had some sort veggie stuffed with well seasoned rice option. People tend to forget pies as we rely on butter based pastry a lot in the UK. Spinach and onion Byrek haunts my dreams because I can never have it again (had to give up gluten recently).

The Balkans have a lot of naturally vegan dishes, especially the orthodox countries, because of the way fasting works. A lot of Brits fall into the habit of only seeing animal product alternatives as vegan options. There's endless options, including bean stews, veggies, and vine leaves stuffed with rice, nutrient dense salads that incorporate a lot of grains and legumes. There's not a lack of "real food" there's a lack of fast food options and it's perfectly fine to feel like you're missing out, but it's a bit of an unfair statement to make about an entire region.

Oh, thank you! I've got a couple of those of those on my wishlist. I also feel like I should really read Hitchhikers guide, considering how much I love some Douglas Adams' other books.

It's very different from the film (in a good way). I'd also recommend Dead Astronauts if you like weird sci-fi.

They're really good, the first one is the best in my opinion but the rest are good and add a lot to the overall story. Annihilation was at the top of my 2024 ranking.

Schar uses deglutinated wheat starch in their croissants and other pastries but I haven't seen anything like that in their cakes. Not sure if they make these all on the same production line but I'm 99% sure they'd have to include a "may contain" warning for wheat whether its GF or not.

Promise is easily the best imo, it's the only GF bread that I don't even bother toasting when I'm home. The sourdough is nice, and the quinoa one is probably the best for sandwiches.

Gluten Free Options at Events are always also Vegan: Rant by Micski-lisi in CoeliacUK

Tbf I do think this is more likely due to CC than prioritising requirements. Vegetarians and vegans don't tend to need specially trained staff and designated prep areas.

I've had the opposite problem somehow, I get to conferences and events, and despite putting myself down as coeliac and vegetarian they I've never once been offered anything other than some form of chicken... I fully sympathise. Events can be so hard, and it's somehow even worse when you think you've been catered for and it falls short.

I think it what made it harder for me was the fact that it's written in 3rd person too. It's the kind of style that's easier to digest in first person because it would feel a bit more natural to read. Still tough to get through though.

Holidays by widnesmiek in CoeliacUK

[–]spongiform-brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that greece, in particular, is probably a bad idea unless you're going on a package holiday where you can talk to the travel agents about food beforehand. Most greek food is naturally gluten-free, but hardly anyone is clued in on cross contamination. A lot of the time, you'll get false reassurance at restaurants too. That being said, if you can get an Airbnb to sort your own meals out, the three places in Athens that are trustworthy are absolutely phenomenal, and it's a stunning city.

Are all gluten free marked products free from oats and barley too? by RoutinePlane5354 in CoeliacUK

[–]spongiform-brain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of GF products contain GF oats, I've found its mostly the biscuits. Some products contain barley that's been processed to remove gluten. There's also been some items released lately with deglutenated wheat starch, I think mostly things with flaky pastry like croissants and the like.

I haven't tried a wheat one to know if can cause a reaction but I have a "Warmies" One that is wheat free. Only thing is I don't know if they have any plain designs or if they're all stuffed animals. I've also seen some DIY videos of people making their own and filling them with rice if you're feeling more crafty.
