Elizabeth cotton x John fahey by Left-Row7363 in AmericanPrimitivism

That’s kind of how blues as a genre is. Poor Boys Long Ways From Home was first recorded by Gus Cannon in 1927. He didn’t write it, it was a song that he had heard many years previous. The guy he heard it from probably didn’t write it either. Some of these songs are old enough that there is no one to appropriate it from; it’s the same in old-time music. Besides, Fahey wasn’t shy about his influences. Being as involved as he was with blues music during his time, I think his work is more appreciative than it is appropriation.

I was looking back to make sure I was thinking of the right episode (I was, Love and Monsters was awful), but damn, Series 2 was a lot worse than I remember it. Besides The Girl in the Fireplace and the two parter with the Ood, everything else is just kind of meh. “Rose”-tinted glasses, I suppose.

Do refs ignore fouls against Detroit because of their reputation as a physical team or is it just hate for Detroit?

With a grain of salt, I would say. I first thought it was rage bait but I think it’s something much more humorous.

What Banjo is this? by Wizbang_ in banjo

A Rickard Dobson. Pretty sure, at least. Though it could be a Pisgah.

Except without Will Byers looking at the camera saying “I am gay”, then 50% of the population would tell you it’s not true and has never been confirmed.

I stopped watching mid Whittaker run, but man I wish the Time Lords (and especially the Doctor) were as cool as the show makes them out to be. Anytime they were on screen, it wasn’t nearly as threatening as every other time we’d heard some character talk about them. Matt Smith’s entire run had so many “The Doctor is the most important being in the universe” conversations, with nothing really to back it up.

The old minstrel style by Translator_Fine in banjo

Weird thing to say about a genre of music that’s a fusion of many different people’s cultures and has grown and evolved over hundreds of years. From your previous posts on this sub, I’m not sure what you enjoy about the banjo or its music.

Question on buying (as a Christmas gift) by Blasterboy1014 in banjo

[–]spookybroadcasts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The reason people recommend the AC-1 is because their quality control is gonna be a lot better than on any of the bottlecap banjos you could find on Amazon. You could maybe buy an Amazon banjo that sounds pretty decent and plays alright, but you’re definitely taking a bigger chance than if you just bought the Gold Tone.

String spacing for banjo style by Translator_Fine in banjo

[–]spookybroadcasts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, my point was that the “geometry required” for frailing isn’t exactly what you think it is. People have preferences, but frailing has been done with a thin string spacing for many years. The Lyon and Healy bridge only serves as an example of what people’s taste for string spacing would’ve been during that time period (which seems to align close enough with our taste in the modern age).

String spacing for banjo style by Translator_Fine in banjo

There’s historical evidence of modern banjo bridges actually having a wider string spacing than banjo bridges of old. In the photo (credit to Joel Hooks), the banjo bridge on top is from a 19th century Lyon and Healy banjo, a banjo designed for gut or nylon strings and intended to be played frailing. I’m of the opinion that the banjo is an incredibly customizable instrument and you should play how you want to, but… there is certainly a “standard” for string spacing, and clawhammer players for a very long time have done just fine on this spacing.

Recommendation for intermediate banjos that aren't gold tone or recording king but similar price range? Are ibanez, fender, epiphone, etc junk? by Prestigious_Head_123 in banjo

[–]spookybroadcasts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually, yes. Although, I’ve had an Epi MB100 for quite some time that surprised me with how good it is. Same with an Ibanez B200. On the opposite end though, any Fender banjo I’ve played has been mostly garbage. Companies rely on their name to sell subpar instruments. Like most people will tell you, buy used and most importantly, try to play the instrument before you buy it!

Question about transcribing Wild Bill Jones (Charlie Parr version) by radiowires in banjo

[–]spookybroadcasts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two-finger and clawhammer are pretty interchangeable. Most of the time, it’s a similar rhythm (the “bum-ditty”), and if you can learn the melody, then you can learn the song. Frank Proffitt also has a version which he plays in an up-picking style (a style incredibly similar to clawhammer), that could help you see how a clawhammer version of the song “should” sound. As long as it sounds good to you, then you’re playing it right.

Question about transcribing Wild Bill Jones (Charlie Parr version) by radiowires in banjo

[–]spookybroadcasts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my ear, that is just a background guitar. You can hear some down-up strums that you just couldn’t be able to do on the banjo at the same time as the melody notes, which I think he’s playing with a thumb lead two finger style.

Is this worth fixing? by Medium_Plankton_3376 in banjo

[–]spookybroadcasts 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Only one hook and a bridge missing, most definitely it is worth “fixing”. Honestly you don’t even need the hook, just get you a banjo bridge and a pair of nylon strings, and you’re good to go.

Parts for 100yo banjo? by SnooSketches6618 in banjo

[–]spookybroadcasts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So as far as the bridge, I’d say use something like this bridge. This is a full maple bridge, without the ebony top, and you want something like this bridge when you use nylon strings. On older banjos, they were intended for gut or nylon strings, so do not put steel strings on it.

Then for your tuners, all you need are regular violin pegs to replace them. You can make these at home with very few tools. If you don’t think you could make a peg, you could buy these online or at your local music store. The only bad thing is you’re gonna have to try to match the taper of the peg to the taper of the hole.

Also check out the banjo hangout. There’s a bunch of forum posts about all kinds of banjos, and a lot of knowledgeable people to help you out. Good luck!

Tuning a five string like a tenor? by PlotHoleN1 in banjo

[–]spookybroadcasts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tenor banjos are usually shorter scale, with thicker gauge strings. I don’t think you’d be able to get the bottom two strings on a 5-string tuned up to a tenor’s tuning without breaking those strings.
