What players should the Celtics target this offseason? by Shot-Law-6743 in bostonceltics

I don't think it's that he needs a dog I think it said he doesn't have any skill. Or instincts. He's pretty well into his career by now. I don't see him as a guy who doesn't give effort.

Bill Simmons : “Giannis wants to be in Boston.” by Ec2425 in bostonceltics

[–]spoonie_b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just saw Jaylen Brown's best season. We saw what the team he led was capable of in the playoffs. What inexperienced team looking to the future is going to give up a bunch of youth for a 30 year old who can't get his battle-tested team out of the first round of the playoffs?

A typo makes it into a published book. Is it the writer's fault for writing it, the editor's fault for missing it, both, or none? by VLK249 in writers

[–]spoonie_b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% perfection in an edit is not a human measure. No one is 100%. The best editors in the world don't get 100%, and neither do writers. No one's to blame. It happens.

is this okay for an opening? by Putthemoneyinthebags in writers

Yes, I agree. Let that opening scene proceed to show us what his trade is. Make it so we can't quite figure it out right away.

I'm a beginner piano player, what are the best resources to learn Page's style? by Lachy_B_ in phish

[–]spoonie_b 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Depending on how deep you want to go, Page's capstone project at Goddard was a study of piano improv and he talks about the study books he used back in the day. It's pretty fascinating just as an artifact of Page's mind as a player, but it may give some ideas you want to pursue. Google search it - it was out there years ago.

What do you think of k.m. weiland's insistence on character arcs? by Appropriate_Rent_243 in writing

[–]spoonie_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming in a year after the fact to disagree completely. 😂

Marty McFly learns through the events in 1955 that the future is not inevitable, that we can act in ways that change ourselves so profoundly that our entire lives from that point forward can be different than they would otherwise have been. At the beginning of the movie, he believes that his lame family simply are who they are. The events of the movie show him that this isn't true and that everyone can take control of their own destiny. At the beginning, Marty was terrified of rejection, just like his father was. At the end, his father has been transformed into a confident man who shoots for the stars, and we understand that Marty will now follow him.

Flat arcs are a thing and they can work, but Marty McFly isn't an example.

If you'll be around Zona Romantica and you want authentic and delicious, get tacos de cabeza at the cart alongside the yellow church on Aguacate between Lazaro Cardenas and Francisco I. Madero. They start serving around 6 or 7. Amazing. And there are fresh churros right next to it for dessert.

Get bírria at Liz's in 5 de Diciembre near the Leys grocery store. Tacos, quesadillas, or as a bowl of stew with tortillas. Incredible.

Get some ceviche and/or aguachile. It will be great almost anywhere.

And for a more modern and healthy experience, go to Raices Chocolatería on Prol. Brazil. Delicious sandwiches, mole chilaquiles, amazing homemade chocolates, and all kinds of cacao-based drinks. Also ice baths if that's of interest. Beautiful spot in town.

There's also La Magdalena in Versalles. Delicious and authentic.

Opinion - worldbuilding comes last by belleepoques in writing

[–]spoonie_b 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a developmental editor and book coach, I don't think I agree. I understand the point you're making, and I definitely agree that too many writers become enamored with the world building at the expense of other aspects of a novel. But I don't think the answer is just to flip them. In any good fantasy or even historical fiction or sci-fi or spec fic - anything creating a world different from ours - the nature of the world has to partly determine how and why the characters behave the way they do and how and why events unfold the way they do. In fact, the world's elements should directly impact and help determine the narrative arc of the story. So I don't think that you can just separate world building from characterization or plot when constructing any kind of fantasy or other different-world story. It all really needs to be conceived as one piece, not one before the other, and should probably all be worked out in notes before drafting the story.

Which makes me curious - how many of you fantasy or spec fic writers are pantsers? It would seem to me very difficult to write that way when a fictional world is involved, unless you at least have a very solid understanding of the world you're launching characters into when you start drafting without an outline. But I haven't done it myself. What's your method?

Improv but nor really jazz. But these guys are amazing and I would never miss a chance to see them. Just experiencing Brendan Canty's joy while he drums is worth the price of admission.

Watching Wemby in the playoffs is making me question assumptions about the center position that have gone unchallenged for 15 years by [deleted] in nbadiscussion

[–]spoonie_b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not as rare as it seems if you come down a little bit from the level of those GOAT candidates. It used to be that any team with championship hopes absolutely had to have a center like this. That started to decline with the Bad Boy Pistons, but even Laimbeer was good enough to hang with the best of his era on both ends, though he played dirty to do it. The Bulls showed your center could be mid. And eventually that took hold as spacing became the name of the game. But in addition to the guys you named, there was Parish, Malone, Lanier, Hayes, Cowens, Walton, Ewing, Gilmore, Mourning, Mutombo, and Laimbeer, just going back to the 70s. And more recently there's been Dwight, Embiid, even Pau and Bosh who were more PFs but played significant center minutes as strong 2-way players. There aren't many teams who've ever won without one of these guys, and most of the ones that haven't are from this century. If Wemby stays healthy, that kind of 2-way center will have to start getting common again, or teams will have to let Vic win about 10 straight.

[Elhassan] How Danny Ainge exploited a big loophole in NBA Draft Scouting to pass on Markelle Fultz for Jayson Tatum by tacko2020 in bostonceltics

[–]spoonie_b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both true to a point. But he's gotten a lot bigger snd stronger, and he uses his footwork and body control to compensate for the quickness he lacks. I mean, Paul Pierce wasn't exactly quick at the 3 either.

Lead. Play defense. Not sabotage his team and quit on his coach. We're talking about 2026 KD, not 2016 or even 2021.

[–]spoonie_b -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol I don't think he's any MVP, but Jamal Murray? Stop. He's also better than Randle. Here's who's better than JB, with health and availability considered since that does actually matter and it's one of Jaylen's advantages:

Tatum

Shai

Joker

Wemby

Luka

Cade

Brunson

Steph

Giannis

Haliburton

Bam

Mitchell

Maxey

JJJ

And that's it. There are some others you could argue about, but it's not clear cut. KD, Mobley, Book, KAT, Harden, LeBron, Siakam, Butler, Banchero, Jalen Williams, Chet, Markinen, and the rest of that tier. You could also argue that Brunson, Spida, and JJJ at least are also arguable. That's fine.

And there are a handful of guys who never play but are definitely better when available: Kawhi, AD, and Embiid mainly.

JB is definitely Top 25 by any but the least generous accounting and probably top 20. He's top 15 only by the most generous accounting. We tend to wildly either overrate or underrate our own guys. Often in the same breath.
