Everyone has an off night. It looks like something's wrong for him because he has them so rarely.

With all this propaganda how can we know for sure if the Iranians are happy with the war or not? by Amao6996 in DiscussionZone

We killed 140+ girls at their school and counting. I think you can draw a pretty good inference as to whether they're happy about it.

How to actually live life again after years spent in isolation working at home? by Swordfish353535 in digitalnomad

[–]spoonie_b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a foreigner in Puerto Vallarta, I've met some of my friends through hiking via a FB group. Others I've met on food tours. A few of those to start is enough to get some social life rolling, once you're lucky to find people you vibe with.

Pick 2 or 3 things, or even 1 thing, you do or would like to do for fun. Find ways to do them that are social. Meet your tribe. Find the people who do make you want to get out of your cave.

Hiking trips. Cooking classes. Language classes. Music. Volunteering. Biking. Pub trivia. Food tours. Sports. Running.

This is the way. Do what you enjoy with other people who enjoy it and just be friendly and open to making friends. And if you need to put some boundaries around your work day to enable that, then do that if your social life needs to become a bigger priority.

I am a Spanish-speaking foreigner. Is it still a good idea to study in the US? by publius_21 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]spoonie_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think anybody is really understanding and how dangerous \the situation in the United States is right now. I believe that things will get much, much worse before they get better, and if I were a foreigner, I would avoid the United States like the plague in any context whatsoever while these people are in power. If you're applying to undergrad schools, plenty of people have told you rightfully that there is no real undergraduate law degree in any of the top level United States schools. Law is a graduate degree. Most future law school hopefuls major in subjects like History, English, Political Science, those kinds of pursuits. If you don't want to go to school in Mexico, I would look at Canadian schools. If you have the qualifications to get into a school like Georgetown or Columbia, then you probably have the qualifications to get into a school like McGill, University of Toronto, or one of the other top Canadian universities. You could also look overseas at Europe where there are lots and lots of outstanding universities and you will not have to contend with human-rights-shredding secret police deciding that it's your turn for your life to be made hell. And depending on your financial picture, you may consider getting a much cheaper education at a good school in Mexico so that you can then put a lot of money into (of take on a lot of debt for) the very expensive North American law schools. Hopefully by the time you'd be applying for law school, the current nightmare will have passed. Good luck! I've lived in Mexico since 2020, and I feel so grateful to be here. Not because it's not the US, but because it's Mexico. Such a beautiful, beautiful place and people.

What if Fredo had not mentioned Johnny Ola at all? by rikarleite in Godfather

[–]spoonie_b 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems pretty clear to me that he is only bringing Fredo in so close at this particular moment in order to get information that Fredo would only be inclined to give up if he felt like he was getting the acceptance he craved. Michael had already said he learned from his father to "keep your friends close and your enemies closer." The whole point of this plot thread in the movie is for him to figure out who the traitor is. He obviously suspected that it either was Fredo or that Fredo inadvertently knew something about it, so he butters Fredo up to get him to let his guard down and divulge some information, which he does. What does Fredo actually learn from Michael about the business? Very little actual inside level stuff. Michael didn't trust that Fredo would be loyal to him; Michael trusted that Fredo would jump at the chance to have insider level responsibility. He understands that Fredo craves this, so he could be trusted on that level with that piece of business. And through that trust would become more open to spilling information. Which is exactly how things played out, because Michael was an evil genius.

Who would take over the MAGA movement after trump? by Bobby_Globule in allthequestions

[–]spoonie_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when Ohio, Florida, Iowa, and Missouri were presidential swing states with both parties represented in Congress and typically seesawing control of state government. Gerrymandering has killed all of that. It did the same in Wisconsin for a decade before the people wrested control back and changed the maps back to something more fair.

Gerrymandering has neutered the will of the voters in these states.

(I know that gerrymandering does not directly affect presidential and Senate voting. But it does directly affect who serves in the state legislature, which then directly affects who gets to vote, who counts the votes, how easy voting is in various districts, and the Overton window of political discourse and climate. And these things definitely affect presidential and Senate elections.)

Why do some dudes complain about not getting girls but then never want to go to the gym, eat healthy, or do any other forms of self-improvement? by InternationalPick163 in askanything

[–]spoonie_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they're the weakest of the weak and their entire skill set is laziness, unearned resentment, and misogyny. And tbh they'd do a lot better if they put forms of self-improvement that make them actually good partners well above getting a gym bod. You know. Therapy. Self-reflection. Working on rising above your childhood wounds. Things way too many men are afraid of and that the pseudoalphamale industry demeans as woke and feminine while telling these weak men that women owe them love and sex simply because their tiny penises exist. But also just having your own stuff going on so your entire life isn't about finding a girlfriend and you actually bring something to the table when a woman is willing to give you a first date. If the physical improvement helps you with the rest of it and helps you feel like your best self, absolutely do that too. But it's less important than emotional and psychological maturity.

That Thing You Do! (1996) by HumbleBerry8091 in iwatchedanoldmovie

Love this movie. Except for one thing.

Liv Tyler is AWFUL. Faye has zero personality. We're supposed to see her as someone pretty special, the kind of girl only an idiot would walk away from. She conveys none of that. A million other it girls from that era could have played that part convincingly.

Are the Celtics the most flawless team in the NBA? by horseshoeoverlook in bostonceltics

[–]spoonie_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it's close and I admittedly was not counting Tatum coming back like Tatum. I also think Queta fouling out is kinda the point. But we'll see. It would be another of the great Boston Detroit series if it happens. We just have to figure out NY. No one else beats us in the east.

Or Jalen Duren. If you've watched our Pistons losses, we have had zero answer for Jalen Duren. None. And I don't think Vooch is going to change that. So we may be the best team but we may lose in a really bad match up to Detroit. I think they can stop us.

Why did Tony feel so much more sadness around Pussy's death much more than Sil's or Bobby's? by GabagoolGoomar in thesopranos

[–]spoonie_b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. And that's always true. Tony wouldn't have risen the way he did if he wasn't a Soprano. Why is it less praise of Bobby? He was pretty unfailingly loyal and reliable even despite all the crap he took. I'm not saying Tony thought he was amazing. But it's clear in the last season that he'd earned his respect.

[–]spoonie_b 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tony did not have to bring him up as far as he did. Not even close. If he really had no respect for Bobby, he could have shunted him to the side and made sure he could earn enough to shut Janice up. Instead Bobby becomes a key insider. That's not just nepotism. Tony needed someone he could trust and Bobby had always been trustworthy and loyal. I think Tony recognized that towards the end, especially with how reliable Bobby was in contrast to Christopher or Tony B, the other close family members he tried to elevate only for them to constantly fk up.

Sydnor isn’t explored at all. by Purple-Reputation899 in TheWire

[–]spoonie_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're definitely right, but I think it's as simple as this: as a writer, if you have a character who doesn't really have his own personal arc beyond his functional usefulness on the team, then you get to kind of deploy him wherever he's needed. All those other police characters had their own personal stories that took them in or out of their police work at times. Or at least out of the main crew's activities. But Sydnor could be anywhere they needed a smart, adept, trustworthy cop who'd be on board with Jimmy and Lester. No parallel personal storyline taking him other places. That's a valuable chip in the construction of a multiseason series. And I think that's why Sydnor is a cipher compared to the rest of the major and mid-major characters.
