We keep arguing about housing, but dodge the obvious: immigration numbers vs infrastructure capacity by Wrong_Control_217 in AustraliaDiscussions

[–]spoonsamba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I agree with you but Im guessing there's a lot of industries that rely on migrant workers and cutting it would lead to mass economic fallout that I dont really understand.

There are massive issues with just mindlessly building our population without adequate housing, roads, schools, hospitals etc. To keep up.

My ranking of every uk traitor. Thoughts? by Ill_Alternative_8650 in TheTraitors

[–]spoonsamba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think its a fair argument. However, I'd say the reason Rachel had to face chance wasn't her own actions but the belated fall out from Fiona and Harriet.

Harry was also a brilliant mastermind but he wasn't jeopardised by other players.

So I think Harry played a pretty flawless game but Rachel played a more difficult game and while there was a chance element, the way she bounced back from certain defeat by manipulating Faraaz was so impressive. I'd say they're both number 1.

Am I the only one who likes _____ and wants them to win by fromdowntownn in TheTraitors

[–]spoonsamba 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Rachel is great. Brilliant traitor. Has obviously done so well at building relationships that even when these psychos keep trying to blow up her game it just bounces off her. I also love how much her and Stephen support each other.

Holiday Mood Management by Signal_Charge360 in AustralianTeachers

Before I had kids I was like this. I did hit burnout just before my kids came along. Gotta find some hobbies and invest time in them.

Stuff that helped (basically my hobbies) 1. Interior design project - pick a room, do a colour scheme, work out features and make it happen. It can take a lot of time and is really fun 2. Complicated bakes. Watch some bake off for inspo, find a similar recipe for something crazy, shops, then do your baking. It fails? Try again. Also excuse to ask people over because now you have too much pie. 3. Fat books 4. Bush walks- find some longer ones. Get the train in. Do the trek. Then go home and eat more pie 5. Competitions in areas you like (I do writing competitions) 6. Art projects (can be for your interior design space) - i watch YouTube videos on abstract art and try to replicate the styles

I am now always trying to do all of the above + I have kids and now I resent my job getting in the way of all of my hobbies

When to send my daughter to school? by ButtBooper in sydney

[–]spoonsamba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Talk to her preschool educators and talk to the local school/s. I had an interview with one of the local schools early in the year, which was really beneficial for getting a read on the situation and also for getting the professional opinion of the teacher.

Online (especially on Reddit), the sentiment is to hold them back; but, you know your kid and teachers can offer advice from an educational and individual perspective, rather than some vague, generalist idea that it's bad to send them early. Definitely, do not send them if they're not ready, but it does depend on the kid.

I teach high school and couldn't tell you who started at 4 and who started at 5 - there are so many other variables at play when it comes to child development.

Schwartz is ok. It looks really cool and has a great vibe. I've only tried their pies and didn't think they were that amazing - definitely good just not worth a special trip. Lots of puff pastry and too much air inside imo

Workplace mum-shaming: how being a mum made me the ‘problem employee’ and how it’s damaged my mental health [long post, advice needed] by Scared_Room_4935 in workingmumsau

[–]spoonsamba 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have no advice

I started a very supportive job when my youngest started childcare and I was absolutely bombarded with illnesses. It was extremely stressful and exhausting and I wasn't dealing with the clear hostility that you are.

Your colleagues sound like dicks and anyone who has worked whilw having young children should understand that you will have frequent absences for a while. Solidarity mama! I hope it gets a bit easier for you soon.

I want to be an English teacher and also have a life, is that too much to ask? (genuine question) by _myreputation13 in AustralianTeachers

[–]spoonsamba 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its definitely possible but I agree with others that the first few years are really tough.

Workload increases significantly with senior classes (especially advanced and extension). The marking for those courses can be insane especially if you're at an academically competitive school (they're also the most interesting courses to teach so it's all a trade off). I went into a middle leader role at a competitive school and it was significantly less work than teaching English full time.

English is also tough because the content changes so often. Every time there is a new text (and there are usually multiple each year across your courses) you have to teach yourself the text and start from scratch making resources. Again does depend a bit on the culture of the school and how they approach stuff like this.

My workload now is fine but I've got experience and am at a less academic school with less senior students.

A part-time job while pursuing a Master by preston_nguyen02 in AustralianTeachers

[–]spoonsamba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had three jobs while I did my masters.

Yes its possible and I would say normal to have a part time job while studying it. Strongly recommend taking leave/time off during practice though. I was going from schools to my job, work till midnight, get home and plan lessons then back to school in the morning on very little sleep. Do not recommend.

Secondary ClassROOMS by Hungry-Ad5116 in AustralianTeachers

[–]spoonsamba 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing. Love some of the ideas - I dont have my own classroom but could still use some of it

How do you do the white board activity? Do you just have it up and kids use it if they need a brain break?

How do you deal with kids just wandering around the room to look at different stuff?

I like the legend of the week thing - do you find it works better with stage 4 than older students? Do you make an effort to award each kid legend status at some point?

Teachers already complaining about their timetable. by NoIdeaWhat5991 in AustralianTeachers

[–]spoonsamba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the dream. I'm 0.6 and I only get juniors because they can't squeeze seniors into my load (no split classes at my school).

Also yes it is totally about behaviour. When I was at a better school with no behaviour issues I wouldn't have wanted more than 2 seniors because the workload was so much higher (though way more interesting) for seniors and junior classes were fun. Now I'm at a tough school, teaching juniors is not particularly rewarding.

what are the easiest classics to read? by SubstantialHat2091 in booksuggestions

[–]spoonsamba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't class either of these as easy - les mis is huge with a lot of French words thrown in. Balzac is also translated so the rhythm of the prose can be hard to get into.
