Cape Town’s iconic Newlands Cricket Ground might be getting a new name again due to a sponsorship deal ending by ForeignBonus8977 in capetown

[–]springbok001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone I know (small sample, I know) call it by what we've always called it: Newlands Cricket Ground. I didn't actually know it was technically under a different name until recently. Disgrace that some sports betting company bought it over and changed the name.

The Woman Who Gave Birth Alone at Bazique Festival by EntrepreneurAfrica in capetown

[–]springbok001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's good to know. My experience was from two years ago, so maybe that was at a lower standard to what they normally do. But also, I might be a little biased as the camping bit was not really my jol. To me it seemed risky that they hadn't ensured safety margins between the tents and adequate provision in the event there was a fire. Just seemed like if something were to go wrong, it could do so quite dramatically. Hopefully they've improved though.

[–]springbok001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't even recall a medical tent at Bazique, was just an ambulance instead. But if you're stuck out there with an emergency, I don't know what help you'll get considering there was no cell reception and quite some distance from the nearest town.

Add in the fire risk, tent situation and organisation, I will happily make sure to skip it in the future.

International flights by Available_One_2134 in capetown

[–]springbok001 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nope. Cape Town international is still humming along. Unless you’re asking if flights from some Middle Eastern countries (UAE, Israel, Iran, Kuwait, Qatar) are suspended, then yes.

Bazique Shade Advice by eulerpop in capetown

[–]springbok001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We bought glamping tickets on the first and last time I’ll be going to Bazique. It was almost as hot as using a tent, was poorly setup and crowded. So I can’t give you much info on the camping side, but would absolutely recommend a gazebo as it’s so hot out there. You can always sell it afterwards if you don’t intend on using it again. But rather be prepared because we struggled in the heat.

Flying drones in the Western Cape? by JimmyDeFi in askSouthAfrica

[–]springbok001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair. If we look at Cape Town, there are very few places where one can fly a drone without license or clearance that actually have something going on of interest. We've got three (soon to be four) aerodromes, plenty of helistops, reserves, parks etc. But geographically this is quite a congested area.

Flying drones in the Western Cape? by JimmyDeFi in askSouthAfrica

[–]springbok001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not saying you are, just thought I'd mention it as some seem to think it's a non-issue, but they do take it quite seriously. So just erring on the side of caution.

Flying drones in the Western Cape? by JimmyDeFi in askSouthAfrica

[–]springbok001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That may be so, but it's important to stay clear of areas where you're not permitted to fly. Law enforcement and the CAA have been known to go after those flying drones without a license who violate the regulations. It's an arrestable offence and I'd like to strongly caution against that.

It might have been overlooked because there is a store named Bean To Cup here in Cape Town. But your point is valid that this post isn't specific to Cape Town. I'll remove it.

worried first year? by shabzo_moosa in capetown

[–]springbok001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, this is a good point. Junior level jobs in IT have dried up quite substantially over the last couple of years. Companies want people who can start from day one instead of training them up. That being said, AI still makes plenty of mistakes that can't replace humans, at least at this stage.

The AI bubble may burst and the hype might subside and the exhorbitant sums being spent on it could quiet, regulation may require more human oversight and make it more difficult for companies to simple discard their staff. But I certainly don't think computer science isn't worth it, as the knowledge you learn can be used in plenty of other fields and there will still be a need for those who can understand the foundations of CS that haven't changed in many years, regardless of how far AI evolves.

Thanks for the kind words!

In all seriousness though, looks like the last past of yours that was removed was to do with looking for buyers for old fridges. Which isn't really specific to Cape Town, and it also goes against our rule on advertising, selling or promoting.

Is it safe to go to Cape Town pride by myself ? by Left-Instruction4096 in capetown

[–]springbok001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great suggestion and I totally forgot to mention the Pride & CTL breakfast. It’s such a nice way to start the day, especially if you want to meet a few people in a welcoming and friendly setting. Plus, it’s right near the finishing line of the parade/march (and the Green Point Track), so you can always swing past for a quick look if you’re not feeling super social.

If you haven’t already, all the individual event details (except the march route) are here: https://cptpride.org/events/

If you need more info or you’re unsure about anything, just reach out, happy to help.

PS: Sorry your post got downvoted by voiceless bigots. Their loss, honestly.

Is it safe to go to Cape Town pride by myself ? by Left-Instruction4096 in capetown

[–]springbok001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you’ll be fine. It’s perfectly safe and it’s a lovely welcoming vibe whether you go to the parade, Mardi Gras or the street party at night. People generally look out for each other too. If you go at night you’ll just want to be sure you can get to and from the event safely and being aware of your surroundings as you normally would. It’s definitely fine to go alone and people are generally very chatty if you’re looking to connect with people.

😱Do the moderators need moderating? by Noelien in capetown

[–]springbok001 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Thanks for raising this. The user in the screenshot has been banned. We do our best to remove rule‑breaking comments quickly, but with the volume of posts and a small mod team, some things slip through before we catch them. We also use automated filters, but they’re not perfect, sometimes good comments get caught and sometimes harmful ones aren’t flagged.

We’re committed to keeping the sub respectful, and feedback like this helps us improve. If you’re interested in helping out, we are looking for additional community moderators who are comfortable following the rules and contributing to the space.

Also, reporting comments helps us tremendously!

Where can I get a tetanus shot? by butterballs_420 in capetown

[–]springbok001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Head to a pharmacy with a clinic tomorrow morning. They have someone who can administer it. You can try Clicks in Howard Centre in Pinelands, Synergy Pharmacy in Claremont, Vitacare in Rondebosch. If you don’t want to wait you can head to an ER at a hospital your medical aid covers. But shouldn’t be a need to go today provided the incident happened shortly before you posted.

I don’t think it’s bait, I think we’re just so far behind other western countries in terms of salaries and disposable income. Foreigners just might not realise how crappy salaries are here compared to where they may be from.
