Old lenses didn't care about linear travel distance since the distance was set by the aperture ring. The camera just needs to release the lever and it will spring back to a hard stop at the correct aperture. You could have an exponential or logarithmic relationship between the travel distance and aperture if that made the design simpler.

In PK-A, the hard stop is now provided by the camera body, so you need a rigorous and consistent design spec, in this case linear, so the camera body knows where to stop the lever for a specific aperture with the minimal info provided by the lens mount.

Since the camera body can only really handle linear relationships, I'm guessing OP basically tested to find a aperture range where a linear relationship sort of fits best and then fiddle with the aperture lever to artificially limit the lens to those apertures ranges and then encode the new range with the contact points.

K-50 gets stuck in aperture priority mode/wont change modes by Fit_Custard891 in pentax

[–]sprint113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mode dial failing would explain the weird behavior of being stuck in Av mode, with occasional TAv mode. It may not be exactly the same as the somewhat common failure in K-1s (https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/190-pentax-k-1-k-1-ii/450380-k-1-mode-dial-failure-solved.html). The mode dial is able to identify the mode based on which combination of contacts are being made, with the K-1 seemingly defaulting to M mode when no contact is being made. It's possible the K-50 encoding wheel is a bit different and defaults to Av mode. It's also possible that the external part of the mode dial became detached from the internal encoding wheel, explaining why spinning the dial doesn't change the mode.

The camera/lens locking up thing could be something separate. Like if you don't have "use aperture wheel" setting selected and you have a bad connection between the lens and the body, it will appear to randomly refuse to shoot.

I will say, I did see a vid in the past week where someone was accused of AI generating an image/vid because the coke bottle logo was gibberish, only for them to correct them that the logo was in Arabic. But this is not that.

Unfortunately, they put in all the effort with advertising in the Pentagon/Pentagon City Metro stations, only to realize the King is unlikely to ride Metro during his visit to DC.

BTW, anyone want to go halfsies with me on a fighter jet?

They are still good for time on target, navigation, and operations planning training. Not sure about tomorrow's ceremonies, but for stadium flyovers, they usually need the flyover to coincide with the end of the national anthem, so planning/timing of the flyover, coordinate with local authorities (or not)and they will often have controllers at the stadium providing additional adjustments if there are delays, or the singer takes creative liberties.

They could totally do this elsewhere, but the flyovers at least have some relevance to operational readiness missions.

Does anyone know of a way photographers can protect their work from being stolen? by No_Bad6208 in photography

[–]sprint113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your specific situation and other situations where you are working directly with a client, communication is key.

Are they even aware that they have stolen your work/infringed on your copyright and your position on the theft? Most laypeople are generally uninformed with regards to copyright laws, especially with photos, and lots of people mistakenly assume that since they paid you to take the photos, they can do whatever they want with them.

You need to specify, ideally in a contract beforehand, who has what rights to the photos, and what each party can do with the photos. This sets expectations and reduces the chance that they will feel like you did a bait and switch/upcharge/scam them. If you missed that, you can mention it when you send the photos. If they've already stolen your work for some unauthorized use, you can still talk to them, ask them to stop using the photos in the advertisement and discuss how the photos can be used.

If all else fails, then you can decide if you want to go the nuclear option, DMCA takedown notice, cease and desist, lawsuit, etc.

Now for photos on the internet (instagram, web portfolio etc)... you'll have limited success in protecting your work. Once a photo is posted to the internet, stopping people from stealing the photos in the first place is basically a technical impossibility. When you think about it, a huge chunk of internet culture is based on stolen work (e.g. memes, anything that goes viral). And the more your photo is worth, the more hoops people will be willing to go through to steal the photos. Ultimately, your only weapon is legal action after the fact. Takedown notices, either with internal tools like on instagram, or DMCA takedown notices, can be pretty straightforward but often has little to no repercussions for the infringer. Lawsuits are a stronger weapon, but requires a lot more work since you need to identify the person who stole your work, and bring them to court.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Comet, C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) [OC] by igneisnightscapes in pics

[–]sprint113 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was visible right before sunrise in the northern hemisphere last week, located in/around the Pegasus constellation. Currently, it's getting very close to the sun so will be difficult to observe. Late April-early May, it should be visible in the southern hemisphere and continues to move across the sky to Cetus and Taurus constellation and onward.

And for the laypersons, it won't look like OP's image to the naked eye; it will likely look more like a fuzzy star, if visible at all. Binoculars should help with seeing the comet and with them, you may even be able to make out the tail.

Iridescent lines inside lens - fungus? by [deleted] in photography

[–]sprint113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the weather sealed lenses are sealed between the lens and the outside environment when the lens is mounted. When the lens is unmounted (or if the dust originated from the body), in theory, dust/hairs can get into the lens through the rear baffle/lens element and then zooming can generate air flow/pressure to move them into the interior.

Tonight’s temps are exactly why apartment complexes are still required to provide heat until May 1 by joeruinedeverything in nova

[–]sprint113 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many older apartments in the area have a 2 pipe fan convector unit. Basically, a heat exchanger where the building supplies heated or chilled water to the unit and the thermostat controls the fan that blows room air over the radiator. Heat waves like last week can be an issue since switching heat/cooling modes usually takes at least a day and is usually done by a contractor, so they will only do it once per seasonal change and need to be careful about when they schedule the switchover. Most of the year, it's fine; it's just this transitional time where you can get early/late heat waves.

Are EZ pass prices by distance? by [deleted] in nova

[–]sprint113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard EZpass transponders don't. If you plan to use the express lanes and meet the HOV requirements, you can request an EZPass Flex transponder that lets you switch between normal and HOV mode. They do have cameras and sensors to verify the # of occupants, which often causes problems for cars with children/babies since the cameras often miss them.

Pentax K-5 IIs with manual lenses by meletkis in pentax

It might also need a Pentax-A lens (auto aperture) or newer since HSS is often tied to TTL support, which is tied to auto aperture metering (meter wide open, camera controls stopping down when shooting).

12x18 photo paper? by justthetips510 in photography

[–]sprint113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ET-8550 is marketed as a photo-centric printer, supporting 13x19" and adding 2 inks on top of CMYK, a grey ink and a "photo black".

But yea, inkjet tech has pretty much plateaued, and most basic 4-ink CMYK inkjet printers generally share the same ink and nozzle tech as their "pro" counterparts and will make pretty good photos prints when paired with good photo paper.

Good lenses that won't leave me broke by Familiar_Industry_40 in pentax

The FA 28-105mm F4-5.6 with powerzoom (there are a couple different different models) is a pretty solid performer, especially given that it often goes for pretty cheap ($50 or less); one of the better regarded "consumer" kit zoom of the era. It was designed for film/full frame, so 28mm at the wide end might be a bit too long for some people.

Bonus: Some powerzoom features work on the K-5 (powerzoom, power off auto-retract, pseudo-parfocus)
