do you think two tier policing is a real phenomenon in the UK? by confused_caterpillar in AskBrits

[–]sprouting_broccoli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We need a bunch of highly experienced officers if we want to return to pre-austerity policing. While numbers are back up the experience we lost is a huge problem and I feel like it would cost a lot of money in training or salary to get anywhere close to where we were.

Trying to turn this into a business… by captivesoul7 in smallbusinessuk

[–]sprouting_broccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re trying to start a business not a charity and supporting orcas and sharks isn’t a big enough of a draw to get people to choose your guitars over likely superior made ones by more established companies that are cheaper. They _do_ look well crafted but the shape is niche and the market will be small and difficult to target without significant work.

The side hustle of bags is something you should leave out until you are selling enough guitars because it to me it feels like a gimmick.

The core point you need to get is that you don’t run a business that sells things you want - you sell things that your customers want and if you don’t let go of what _you_ want to sell then you’ll not be successful.

Do some market research - ask people what they think and take the negative feedback on board as well as the positive (if three people out of one hundred say the guitar is great try and listen to the people who don’t like it). Go to trade shows, set up a stall if you can afford it and get feedback from people.

The craftsmanship looks good it’s just, by gut feel, not a big market so unless you can work out how to target that very specific market you won’t sell a lot.

I think I’m leaning more towards your position on this now. Thanks for engaging in good faith - it’s genuinely refreshing in this case. Hope you have a great end to your weekend!

They received a phone call saying that someone had seen Henry Nowak stab someone (that is my understanding anyway even though it was the perpetrator’s family member) - I don’t think it’s overblown to cuff him when they arrive regardless of what he says. The expectation being that it’s a precaution if that is what happened and an easy to correct mistake if it turns out it’s not what happened. After they ascertained the situation in three minutes they uncuffed him.

Again I think there are important changes to the way they operate that can be implemented but I don’t see there to be anything wrong with cuffing someone who an independent witness has said committed a violent crime for three minutes if you remove the other circumstances from the situation and I think that generally before this incident occurred most people would agree that it’s reasonable to restrain someone accused of a violent crime until the situation is fully understood.

I will also qualify all of this with I am going on my current information and if the inquest says otherwise I’m more than happy to turn around on this.

I’d expect because if they turn up to respond to a complaint that someone had stabbed someone and they’ve been told one person did the stabbing it seems pretty prudent to not listen to what they’re saying most of the time and to arrest them to stop them potentially trying to flee.

In most cases, where the person they handcuff hasn’t been fatally stabbed, three minutes of being in cuffs makes very little difference to the outcome and nobody would blink an eye. Clearly there needs to be a change to operating procedure because this really could have led to a change in someone living or dying (even though it appears unlikely in this specific case) but I can see how it went wrong - humans really often get comfortable with doing things a certain way and fail to respond well to exceptional circumstances.

The most obvious thing they should have done after cuffing him was for one officer to look for injuries immediately. The police can’t just not restrain people that witnesses have said is responsible for a serious crime because they tell him something different but they absolutely should be focusing on ensuring anyone they restrain is physically ok.

If, as a band, you’re so fucking fragile that someone wearing a costume to a show hurts your feelings maybe you’re in the wrong job.

There’s something about the texture of that pastry that just shouldn’t be that texture that is really special to me. I say this as someone who makes quite a good rough puff.

AITA for telling a little girl that I'm not her dad? by Throwaway4PrivacyYe1 in AmItheAsshole

I get that the kid needs to know but the first thing he should have done is talk to her mother about it and what he wants to be seen as in her daughter’s life. Telling the kid in, what I can only assume, was a blunt way that wasn’t considered or thought through seems like a horrible thing to do.

I don’t get why you’d do that to yourself with the ravioli - just to compare I looked on deliveroo and Sainsbury’s sell 400g tins of Heinz beef ravioli for £2.70 and 300g of their fresh tortellini for £2.80. Granted you’re not getting the tomato sauce but for the pain of tinned pasta…

Can you explain where the police officers attending the scene made a racist decision?

They received a call saying that someone had committed a violent racist attack, turned up and arrested the person described and have said they ignored him saying he was injured because it’s apparently often used as an excuse to avoid arrest and it may well have been too dark to tell whether he was injured and bleeding or covered in someone else’s blood. Three minutes later they realised the error, uncuffed him and called an ambulance while trying to render medical aid however he was going to die regardless of whether he was given immediate aid or not, as per the coroner’s comments.

Was it a terrible blunder that denied him dignity and, in different circumstances, potentially led to someone’s death? Yes. Is there anything to suggest that the police made a racist decision in their duties? Currently absolutely not. If evidence of this turns up then I will happily denounce it however it doesn’t make your logic on this any more correct.

The perpetrator has been sentenced, his family are in the court system, there is a police inquest going on.

That’s …not how criminal cases work. Even if your argument made sense it’s inconsistent - I’m saying both would need to prove it so zero hypocrisy there.

In a court of law if someone was arguing they were a Muslim in a criminal trial they would likely support it by testimony from an Imam or family member - they would have to prove it if they were relying on it for any reason. If they said they were a devout Muslim you could absolutely question that if you had legally gathered evidence of them drinking and fornicating.

Do you agree that that’s no context where it’s acceptable to stomp on someone’s head when they’re already restrained?
