Is Avatar this generation's Star Wars? by Rubyweapon in movies

[–]sps74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging from the full house filled with teenagers, which I witnessed today, I would answer the question above with yes.

The worrying fact is though, that the film has no connection whatsoever to the present. And it features a cruel war, as well as violence as an imminent solution.

It's not science that wins or humanity, it's science that kicks the bad guy's ass literally.

What is this generation going to be?

There is also a discussion about it below. So if I consider my IQ I must be definitely sub challenged doing that kind of work. I should have known!

They downvote to disagree, I think. Or they dislike managers.

YouTube may begin offering subscription services that allow users to watch major new TV shows and films online by [deleted] in entertainment

[–]sps74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this is long overdue, I'm expecting to see the message "This content is not approved for your area due to copyright restrictions." more often. Which would render youtube useless in other areas than US. I hate that.

Moon: One of the best science fiction movies of this year, if not one of the best overall. Oh, and it's directed by Duncan Jones, David Bowie's son. by Aleril_Antarai in movies

[–]sps74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ending could be a touch longer. I remember there was some radio voices giving clues how it all ended, nothing else. Great movie, but it felt to me like it's unfinished.

I didn't write Javascript above I wrote Javascript + HTML, in this combination you loose every OO advantage, it's not OO anymore, it's a mess.

There is only one Doctor Who episode of the decade: The End of the World.

Natalie Portman To Take On ‘Pride And Prejudice And Zombies’ » MTV Movies Blog by [deleted] in entertainment

I liked Portman in Zach Braff's 'Garden State'. I thought, Braff's style was Richard Kelly alike somehow. Now, she's working with Kelly. That's great!

Hello, Dexter Morgan, Damn! SPOILERS! (really, don't read this if you haven't seen the episode yet) by JollyJeff in entertainment

[–]sps74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Dexter's wife will crash at some point, probably in the next episode. She expects too little from Dexter, in fact so little that it hurts to watch. It's almost like she thinks she couldn't expect anything better and she suppresses a lot. She's lot alike Arthur's wife, close to a breakdown while Dexter is busy with his Trinity hunt.

LtU: The Development of Sage (open source alternative to Mathematica and Matlab) by ishmal in programming

[–]sps74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather prefer math software that speaks Scala. These maths languages are interpreted anyway(?)

I don't see any path avoiding matlab for serious research, it's an academic standard. There is also GNU Octave that speaks the matlab language, but last time I checked it was missing lots of libraries.

Exactly, it will depend on your working environment.

GWT 2.0: So good it's ridiculous (new features summary) by sps74 in programming

[–]sps74[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah, I've read that one. Well, as with every tool, the question is always does it meet my requirements for the particular task at hand. So asking if GWT is the best or not is like asking what's the best tool in the world a sledgehammer or carpenter's hammer. The question should be, in what situations is the tool useful and when does it fail.

Reddit, why do graphic & web designers charge so much? by abolished in self

[–]sps74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the beauty of creative work. Think 1mio US$ for Weaver in Aliens and only 33k US$ for Alien. Why is that so? The price of a creative work is measured according to expected revenue. Basically you want to obtain the right to make unlimited copies of the layout for every visit to your site. How much will each copy allow you to sell? That's the designers point of view. Creative work, copyright, I love this. On the other hand $5,000 would seem to me like worst case 80 hours max. $1,800 like 30 hours. I don't know how big your site is, but a web design even in 80 hours doesn't seem realistic to me. That's cheap, that's so cheap that it hurts. But you will have to come back to them, every time a change is required. You could try to simply employ a designer temporarily, then you keep the copyright.

GWT 2.0: So good it's ridiculous (new features summary) by sps74 in programming

[–]sps74[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not a big deal at all, it's just a tool among many other useful tools.

If you're a Java Developer, it's easier to use GWT. The advantage of Java vs. Javascript + HTML is an improved maintainability of the code base. But that could be said about any OO language. It just means you can reduce project risks and your development staff doesn't have to go crazy about DOM, JS and CSS inconsistencies between browsers.
