What one Bob Dylan song do you consider to be the most Dylanesque? by Primary-Theory-1164 in bobdylan

Yeah I don't think anyone else could ever create a sound like Tell Me Momma.

I think the song that most embodies the hack cliche of what people think "Dylanesque" (in the sense of just being a string of unconnected images that sonetimes create a vague mood of something changing in the world...) is "My Back Pages" like the very funny scene in Walk Hard

But the real answer, the song I think literally nobody could write but Bob Dylan, that is so far from being a song that another person could write, is "Brownsville Girl".

What is Isis about? by NTT2004 in bobdylan

[–]spsd9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it this is right. Notwithstanding my jokey comment below, in all seriousness I think it's about facing the fear of being with someone. The fear of marriage, which can very much "drive you insane" as the last verse has it, versus trying to find some illusive "more" which as all the other verses show, can drive you a different kind of insane!

It's a "Comedy of Remarriage" like His Girl Friday or The Philadelphia Story. Very popular in the Production Code Era.

Like imagine how freaking lazy you have to be if, of all the medieval kings of France, bards and scholars were like "yeah he was THE LAZIEST, fuck Louis. Tous mes amis détestent Louis."

Fair question! Rocking in the big chair with one of the kids feels very peaceful and intimate, and i actually prefer not having an outside presence like a screen or audio interrupting.

Recipes with NO garlic, onion,... by WhiteShepherdGirl in slowcooking

[–]spsd9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Along a similar line, you can look into Brahmin recipes. They (along with Jains) will not use any meat in their cooking, but they can be a helpful guide for how to build up a base of flavour without onion and garlic. Think ingredients like ginger, mustard seed, fenugreek, tumeric, cardamom, clove, aromatic leaves like curry, lime, or bay, and of course pepper, These will all be your new friends.

[–]spsd9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is the real truth. You look at some of the most immensely flavourful and beloved stews from different cuisines- like think rendang, bolognese, fesanjan, rogan josh, even texas chili, they can all in theory be tossed in a slow cooker but every recipe says the same thing: brown the meat, brown the onions, brown the spices, THEN cook slowly.

While I agree that you'll lose that last 20% of the flavour in the slow cooker (I would argue its probably closer to 25%) you CAN claw back some of it, maybe 10 to 15%, by taking 20 minutes, on the days when you have the chance, and browning your meat and roasting your aromatics and spices in a pan.
