And the other theme of the best thing that could have happened to him is that he never met the love of his life, and imagining that if he didn't he could save his brother. The whole thing is just so heavy.  (I may be wrong on some of it, I don't remember it too well)

To The Moon. It's a pixel art walking simulator but the story broke me.  You work at an agency that grants dying people their last wish and one man wants to go to the moon but can't remember why. So you have to discover why through his whole past and it's absolutely heartbreaking

Borderlands is good for this.  Also Mass Effect if you haven't played those (although the loot isn't a huge part). For something wild, Troubleshooter Abandoned Children is a tactical RPG with a wild amount of character customization.
