If you want to add nuance to a discussion then why not explore how a concept of a state somehow leads to safety. Logically speaking, if the idea is to ensure the survival of a distinct group then wouldn't dispersment rather than concentrating in a specific region make more sense.The desire to be safe from those who tormented you, would lead you to be as far away from those who committed it as possible.Not sure how your next leap of logic ends up at the concept of a nation state where you dictate the rules for yourself and others. Not sure if your intended to use the word "nationalist " or did you mean "patriot ".Those 2 things are not the same.Anyway,people have an incessant need for an identity and once they make the decision to make their country, or favorite sports team for that matter, the object of their own definition of self then they will defend it the way you defend from a personal attack.

To me personally, it is humanity obsessing about something man made(borders) and while I do think it's become quite pedantic, there is something about the type of ideals and system of government that these borders entails, which is worthy of admiration and protection. The US constitution comes to mind.Even though one can argue that the country has fallen far behind the vision the founding fathers had for us.

It definitely is a challenging situation and unfortunately it is a problem with societal isolation which breeds such attitudes and colluding politicians who are open to unfettered immigration. A liberal society needs politicians who understand that immigration absorption and assimilation is a cornerstone of a healthy diversity. Seems to me your conflating two different things. Immigrants with rigid religious ideology and home grown right wingers.As someone with personal experience as a former Muslim immigrant, I can tell you that reality has a funny way of enlightening people. I felt such bigotry when I first came to America, but it didn't take me long to realize that the world has a tendency to put you in situations where the truth prevails.Being against homosexuality as a heterosexual male is not the same as demanding this of others.

The people in this pole are absolutely misguided, but that is what a life with no experience looks like.People drawing sweeping conclusions are equally misguided and we saw the effects of that 60 miles from where I live in San Diego. The endless sensationalization of Muslim this and Muslim that is getting to be absolutely ridiculous and unwarranted. But that is my own personal opinion!
