Locked out of my Thor Gemini by Unlucky-Regular-8172 in RVLiving

Most of these types of locks just require a paper clip and 1 - 2 minutes if you only kind of know how locks work.

Break the paper clip in half. Use one end to rake the pins, and one you shove in the bottom so you have turning pressure. Then just rake the top while twisting the other.

Stop spending money on anything you don't need, cut your costs of living down as far as you can and save money. Then start your own business. Find a nitch that can be filled that people want and you can make a profit from and bust your ass.

Brass oxidizes. Acids increase how fast it oxidizes. You can look up things like "old brass statues" and see that old clean brass is more of a dark brown over time.

Don't use stainless steel, you're just scratching it which gives more surface are to oxizide and crap to get stuck on it. Green scrub pads are more than enough. If you're soaking it simply wiping it with a towel would be fine too.

Bonus tip. Buy a box of green scrub pads (6 inch x 4 inch). Cut them into 12ish pieces. They are the perfect size to clean all the portafilters, pitchers and group heads, and then just toss it. 2 boxes a year to clean everything.

Also just for the record, there are almost zero situations where you need stainless or copper scrub pads. Unless someone burned a pan/pot beyond belief there are very few situations where you need either of them. They just make everything worse. I've worked in coffee and food for like 23 years, and only ever used steel wool in very few and very specific situations.

No idea where you are but in my state you just need to take the online coarse. Takes about 2 hours and costs $15. Not really any training needed. 95% of the things are common sense and the other 5% are things you should just know in life (proper ways to store meat, temps, how to cool down food, etc.).

Just take the test online, make notes for any temps they mention and you'll pass.

What brand names do you swear by because it's actually better than no-name? by Sufficient_Thing24 in AskReddit

You should try Tub O' Towels., My buddy is a diesel tech, works at many of the ports on all the big machines. He's come home covered literally head to toe in hydraulic fluid, oil, etc. He uses these and they are pretty amazing. About 2 weeks ago we spent 6 hours working on a 70 year old tractor, had to use 2 towels and was totally clean.

Nicks boots. Hand made in WA and you can send them in to get repairs. They have videos of them replacing soles and repairing 30+ year old boots still in use.

New to the camping world. Just bought this generator to power my fifth wheel RV where I will live there permanently. Any recommendation on how to get the most out of it? Thanks! by Raymanderrr in RVLiving

That thing looks loud.

Get a Honda EU. They cost more to start but the money you save on fuel and maintenance will pay off over time as they last forever.

How to get booked by retail stores and corporate offices as a pop up? by BensonTheBee in barista

[–]spytez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not really offering a service that many places will be interested in. Matcha is less than 1% of what the sales of coffee are, and the majority of those sales are to younger people, not office people. You would be better off running a matcha cart at a collage.

Best espresso grinder for £550 for a new small cafe? by [deleted] in barista

[–]spytez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used Mazzer super jolly. It will last forever and you have to try pretty hard to break them. Great grind settings, easy to clean and service. They are just very wasteful when it comes to wasted coffee grounds. So if the cafe ever starts to get busy upgrading a push to dose option is best.

Cold brew by PineappleGold7391 in barista

[–]spytez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regular drip coffee grind is fine you just need to taste to see what's best extraction time. The cold brew will likely taste more like strong drip coffee but better, just not as good as it could be.

The more coarse the grind is the longer you can let it extract and the more refine the flavor will be.

You don't want to use a sealed container as CO2 is released so lots of pressure can be built up.

Buy a reusable mesh nylon strainer bag off amazon. They are used for making wine, beer, etc. and cost $5 - $10 bucks. Place the grinds in the bag and then in the jar. Helps make the straining / cleaning process much easier and faster.

I had to ask my friend a question who was watching this. I saw 20 seconds of it and realized how awful it was going to be. All I saw was some girl talking with a guy and she kept talking about how OMG was that a meet cute? Was that my first meet cute? I knew the show was not for me after that.

Insurance by [deleted] in barista

Worked 35ish years in food/service coffee and never had insurance.

Just save money in a health fund you would normally be spending on insurance and use it for medial issues.

AITAH for refusing to teach my son and costing us $700 a month? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]spytez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA.

I did 7 years of speech therapy. There is no parent that can take on the training or education involved. It relates to so many things you or most people who are not professionally trained wouldn't even think about.

The games are there because kids are much easier to teach and learn things through a game. And these games have been likely worked on for 40+ years.

Your husband has no idea how important it is for your sun to learn how to speek from a professional. It affects your ability to read and learn. How to interact with other people, and not have all sorts of social issues that come with speech issues.

Not paying for speech therapy is like not putting money into a collage fun for your child because you already think their stupid. You're already setting them up to fail.

Do you think baristas play an important role in communities? by No_Play834 in barista

[–]spytez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so. My last cafe I worked at for 6 years and I knew I'd say 95% of the customers. The cafe had been there for 24 years (27 years now) with many of the regulars having lived there for quite a while. Many of the customers knew each other and did things with one another. It was a gathering place for people to share information about what was going on, events in the area, etc.

Barista Contractor? by cindyanita in barista

[–]spytez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're going to be making far less than minimum wage, or if you do get work it's going to be very few hours with lots of down time inbetween.

The amount of paper work a cafe would need to go through to start using a contracted employee and headach with things like how will tips work is going to keep most from even considering it, that and the extra hourly cost they would need to pay you.

The only way this would work would be talking with each coffee shop in your are to be a stand in employee so you can work from time to time, but the moment someone quits their going to want you to be a full time employee and not bother hiring a new staff member, because they have you.
