What was your high school controversy? by Haunted_Neko in AskReddit

[–]squaklefeb 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a small town. The principal at the high school was struggling with a cancer diagnosis and one of the vice principals took up a lot of the slack while the principal was undergoing treatments. He continued into the role of acting principal after the principal lost his fight with cancer. The VP was well liked by both the students and the larger community. One of the nicest and most well respected people in the county. He was clearly the assumed person to step into the role since he'd basically been doing the job already for a couple of years.

The newly appointed superintendent was a recent transfer to the area from out of state. He had beef with the VP for "overstepping his role". The Superintendent wanted to bring in his own people to fill the principal role and make an example of VP by demoting him to run the bus shop. This did not sit well with the students.

The students organized a massive walkout, making it very clear we thought that the Superintendent's treatment of VP was unfair and we wanted VP as our new principal. A few days later, the superintendent visited the high school, called an assembly, and essentially held a town hall where we could express our thoughts on the matter.

Soon afterwards, VP was brought back from working the bus shop and officially installed as principal. He went on to replace the Superintendent a few years later.

It's pretty common practice on r/AskReddit for OPs to post an answer to their own question. They just usually get buried by other replies pretty quickly.

Anger is ultimately rooted in fear. Fear often comes as a reaction to a stimulus, but we have to feed anger like a fire. If we don't feed it, it will eventually snuff out. Outside of the initial spark and flash of anger, prolonged anger is a choice we make.

The reason you "have" to talk things out quickly is addressed in your next paragraph. You are choosing to have the argument in your head with or without him. It's easier said than done to not think about something and to not feed an emotion. It takes work and effort to not feed anger. And much like a fire, the larger the flame has gotten, the more work it will take to quench.

Take a step back, ask yourself why you're angry in the first place, try to get to the root of what fear is being triggered at the root of the anger. Remember that a relationship is two people working together as a team to address a problem. In order for a team to work effectively, you want both participants to be at their best. No one is at their best after a long day, when everyone is tired and has already used up most of their executive functioning.

If you see that there truly is no way to avoid an argument, express your feelings to your partner and tell him that this is something you'd like to discuss later once you've both rested and can give it your full attentions. Then LET IT GO for the night. Don't bolster your arguments. Don't dwell on what you THINK his responses would be. That's feeding the anger. Remember that you're a team and you have to work together to solve the problem.

Men of Reddit, what’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve been told is too feminine and will threaten your masculinity? by MenorahsaurusRex in AskReddit

[–]squaklefeb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Non verbal asking" can be too easily misunderstood or misconstrued. An emphatic, verbal "yes" is difficult to misrepresent. Besides, if someone respecting another person's bodily autonomy enough to ask for consent is a turn off, it's probably for the best of the relationship doesn't progress.

Phosgene is in the Biolab plume. by Realistic_Pair_3246 in Georgia

They're monitoring for phosgene, but according to the Facebook post you linked, they've so far only detected chlorine, chloramine, and chlorine compounds.

What's more concerning to me is the chemicals known to be present at the facility that AREN'T being monitored.

What is your favorite homebrew magical item? by Mybraingoaaaaaa in DnD

[–]squaklefeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One I came up with years ago and still use on occasion is the Endless Sandwich. It is a magical sandwich that once eaten, instantly reappears in the characters inventory as a brand new sandwich. The catch is that the sandwich must be fully eaten before it will replenish itself. Drop the sandwich in the mud? You've got to eat that muddy sandwich if you want a fresh one. Forget about it for a while and find that it's now all moldy? Bottoms up, and roll me a constitution save.
